Abstract

This chapter builds up the philosophical foundations for a systematic Māturīdī theology, interweaving discussion of premodern kalām and contemporary philosophy. The first section looks at the interrelationship between the mind and the world, including discussion of phenomenology and quantum mechanics. The second section looks at the essence-existence distinction, including discussion of intuitionism in the philosophy of mathematics and its implications for logic. The final section explores ontology, including both a treatment of al-Māturīdī’s ontology and of modern trope theory.
