Natural Theology

Abstract

This chapter examines arguments for the existence of God under the familiar headings of ontological, cosmological and teleological. There is a focus on assessing al-Māturīdī’s position in relation to these arguments, as well as reflecting on their use in Islamic theology today. Special attention is paid to recent debates about the kalām cosmological argument and exploring its application in the light of the theological position advocated in the book.
