Some of the first attested examples of philological work, the so-called scholia, were in fact marginalia, namely comments written at the margins of a text. Over the centuries this kind of scholarship evolved until it became a genre on its own, the classical commentary, thus moving away from the text with the result that philologists had to devise a solution to linking together the commented and the commenting text. The solution to this problem is the system of canonical citations, a special kind of bibliographic references that are at the same time very precise and highly interoperable.\u0000 In this paper we present HuCit, an ontology that models in depth the semantics of canonical citations. We discuss how it can be used to a) support the automatic extraction of canonical citations from texts and b) to publish them in machine-readable format on the Semantic Web. Finally, we describe how HuCit's machine-generated citation data can also be expressed as annotations by using the Open Annotation Collaboration (OAC) ontology, to the aim of increasing reuse and semantic interoperability.","PeriodicalId":311873,"journal":{"name":"DH-CASE '13","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116833590","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The notes were produced by an Italian scholar in structured text format. First, we analyzed the content of the document annotated by the scholar and on this basis we created an underlying high-level UML model that plays the role of an initial conceptualization. In the second step, we tried to identify terms belonging to vocabularies used in the Digital Libraries domain, which could be used for specifying the UML conceptualization. To this end, we investigated several existing ontologies, and we chose the terms that we considered useful to represent our knowledge. In order to describe all the knowledge embedded in the notes, we added classes and properties. Finally, we built a RDF graph that represents the semantics of the notes.","PeriodicalId":311873,"journal":{"name":"DH-CASE '13","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130854095","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Senso Comune aims at integrating lexicographic data from users and legacy resources with a formally characterized ontology grounded on lexical semantic structures. Senso Comune was conceived as a linguistic knowledge base rather than a dictionary. It is actually based on a conceptual apparatus that is unusual in typical linguistic resources:, each sense is mapped to ontological categories, and is associated with semantic frames. A wiki provides a collaborative platform for editing a basic lexicon of Italian with different access and annotation privileges that dynamically enables crowd-sourced annotations. Senso Comune proposes different levels of interrelated representation layers that differently exploit collaborative annotation.","PeriodicalId":311873,"journal":{"name":"DH-CASE '13","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126854135","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The goal is to develop a Web information system for such a domain and, at the same time, to publish data according to Linked Open Data principles.\u0000 We have used the Bibliotheca Iuris Antiqui (BIA) system, a vertical framework in the Ancient Roman Law domain.\u0000 The BIA system incorporates three archives: Fontes (full-text Roman Law sources), Opera (bibliographic records) and Thesaurus (Ancient Law conceptual vocabulary). Connections within the information contained in the archives are highlighted by semantic links found in Opera records, whose role is to connect other archives as well (Thesaurus and Fontes).\u0000 The BIA system, which has been published so far in CD-ROM and in proprietary format only, has been migrated to the online integrated system BIA-Net, representing the data according to the W3C standards. Hopefully, BIA-Net will also be analyzed by broader and multidisciplinary scientific communities.\u0000 We intended to preserve the existing front-end and services of the BIA system, making data in XML format according to the DC, TEI and SKOS vocabularies. In particular, this article details the transformation of Thesaurus content and structure in Semantic Web standards using metadata in SKOS/RDF.\u0000 Each concept of the reference domain is designed as part of the BIA-Net system and, at the same time, it is a self-descripted stand alone element, with its URI, in order to allow the definition of an Ontology in the Ancient Law domain.","PeriodicalId":311873,"journal":{"name":"DH-CASE '13","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128238061","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The BPS tools include 1) functionality to import TEI documents and convert to our data model, 2) a disambiguation engine to associate names to persons based upon configurable heuristic rules, 3) an assertion model that supports flexible researcher curation and tracks provenance, 4) social network analysis and 5) graph visualization tools to analyze and understand social relations, and 6) a workspace model supporting exploratory research and collaboration. We contrast the BPS model that uses configurable heuristic rules to other approaches for automated text analysis, and explain how our model facilitates interpretation by humanist researchers. We describe the significance of our curation model that improves upon traditional curation and annotation as a fact-based model by adding a more flexible model in which researchers assert conclusions or possibilities, allowing them to override automated inference, to explore ideas in what-if scenarios, and to formally publish and subscribe-to asserted annotations among colleagues, and/or with students. We detail the architecture and our implementation of the tools as a set of reusable web services and web application UI. We present an initial evaluation of researchers' experience using the tools to study corpora of cuneiform tablets, and describe plans to expand the application of the tools to a broader range of corpora.","PeriodicalId":311873,"journal":{"name":"DH-CASE '13","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131187152","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Digital heritage and avatars of stories","authors":"V. Lombardo, Antonio Pizzo","doi":"10.1145/2517978.2517991","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1145/2517978.2517991","url":null,"abstract":"A relevant issue in the annotation of digital heritage is the abstraction of concepts in a cross--media context. This is true in the case of dramatic media (e.g., screenplay, performance, TV series, video-game, feature film), where the performance has the same relevance of the text, and can be read as a text itself. The primary notion underpinning these two types of texts is the story, with its dramatic qualities shared among the different texts. Thus, following Ryan's definition of \"avatar of story\", each format can be seen as an avatar of this primary notion This paper presents a system for the collaborative annotation of the story elements in media heritage. Story elements are employed to describe the dramatic qualities (e.g., story agents, agents' goals, conflicts of agents), abstracting from the specific media in which they appear. The system consists of an ontology--based schema and a web platform for the annotation of the dramatic metadata on the digital heritage items (in textual or audiovisual form). The paper also describes a module for the visualization and exploration of such metadata, for cross--comparisons in drama studies. The system was tested on the comparison between the agent's intentions in the story representation and the incidents appearing in the timelines of the specific performances.","PeriodicalId":311873,"journal":{"name":"DH-CASE '13","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128298613","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
