This study explored lateral violence among nurses at a Jamaican hospital. Methods: A fixed concurrent QUAN= QUAL mixed method study design was employed. Data were gathered from 114 registered nurses using the 38-item Briles’ Sabotage Savvy self-administered questionnaire and two focus group discussions. Results: Exposure to lateral violence was reported by 96% of participants, and 3/4 rated the exposure as moderate to severe. Nurse Managers were the main perpetrators of lateral violence (63%). Lateral violence created a hostile environment, and half of the nurses surveyed indicated an intent to resign. These survey findings were supported by the focus group discussions which yielded themes inclusive of professional disengagement and erosion of team work. Conclusion: The high levels of lateral violence reported in this study indicates an urgent need for the implementation of appropriate workplace violence policies. Reported threats to the healthcare system included poor staff retention and professional disengagement. Highlights: Lateral violence among nurses is one of the most damaging issues affecting the progress of the nursing profession and is well studied in the developed world. The attributes of the phenomenon of lateral violence in a low and middle-income country are described in this paper. Exposure to lateral violence was reported by 96% of participants, forms of lateral violence appeared to be mainly verbal or emotional and nurse managers were the major perpetrators. Assimilated behavior in response to lateral violence among the nurses included professional disengagement, retaliation, avoidance and intent to resign. The pervasiveness of lateral violence among the nurses studied indicates the need to implement appropriate workplace violence policies.","PeriodicalId":311537,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Advanced Nursing Studies","volume":"143 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126618442","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Aim : To estimate the prevalence of insomnia and its associated factors among community-dwelling elderly. Study design: This is a cross-sectional descriptive study carried out on 1059 elderly living in three villages affiliated to Mansoura District, Egypt. Data collected during an interview included: socio-demographic and clinical features, habits before sleeping, environmental factors that could affect sleeping, the geriatric depression scale and Athens insomnia scale. Logistic regression analysis was done to find out the independent predictors of insomnia. Results: The prevalence of insomnia was 62.1%. The logistic regression revealed that insomnia is less likely among elderly of 75 and more (AOR=0.3) compared to those aged 60-75 years. The risk of insomnia is high among those with depression (AOR=6.4 and 14.6 for mild and moderate/severe depression; respectively), fear of death (AOR=14.7), life stressors (AOR=7.1), presence of musculoskeletal disorders (AOR=5.6), respiratory disorders (AOR=4.5), worry about children (AOR=4.5) and cold bedroom (AOR=2.7). Conclusion: Slightly less than two-thirds of the studied subjects have insomnia, and most of the associated factors are preventable and/or controllable. Recommendations: According to the results of the present study, the following recommendations are suggested: Design educational program for elders to enhance sleep through emphasizing on the importance of sleep hygiene practice, behavioral and non-pharmacological interventions, and healthy lifestyle.","PeriodicalId":311537,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Advanced Nursing Studies","volume":"87 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114619559","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Lack of knowledge of the available guidelines for the prevention of CVC-associated infection may increase the rate of CVC-associated infections. Objective: The purpose of the study is to evaluate student nurses’ knowledge of the guidelines for preventing CVC-associated infection. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional survey was used. This study involved 267 student nurses from four government universities. They were in their second-, third- or fourth-year of study. Results: Most of the students were female (72.3%) with a mean age of 21.2 (SD 2.5). The mean total score of students’ knowledge was very low at 1.6 (SD 1.5) out of 10, the maximum score, and ranged from 0 to 7. Students who reported having received adequate theoretical and clinical education about CVC had higher mean total knowledge scores than those who had not. Conclusions: The results showed that Jordanian student nurses have insufficient knowledge about the prevention of CVC-associated infection. In order to improve their knowledge, an evidence-based teaching approach is required in the theoretical classes. This should be combined with the best clinical training through the use of simulation techniques.","PeriodicalId":311537,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Advanced Nursing Studies","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-03-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122277165","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
