The identification was conducted through a field surveys and land characteristics zoning based on the potential of topography, viewing zones and existing vegetation for the need of further analysis and mapping through carrying capacity ratio method. The analysis and mapping result generate a map of land development feasible location that can become reference for the local government in determining the direction of Bukit Surowiti tourism area development.","PeriodicalId":31123,"journal":{"name":"Emara Indonesian Journal of Architecture","volume":"24 1","pages":"86-93"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69683186","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The object studied was Kebonsari Village located on the southern border between Malang City and Malang Regency. Kebonsari village has an interesting topography because it is passed by two rivers, namely Mergan River and Sukun River which is located in eastern Kebonsari. In general there is a conflict between the approach of sustainable development and social sustainability in the urban context. The concept of sustainability brings a key framework for extensive literature on urban design, architecture and planning. Nevertheless there is a considerable overlap between the social dimensions of sustainability and the theories or notions, for instance the ‘sustainable societies’ that are highlighted in the midst of other aspects: social equity and justice. Such society is widely expected to offer a situation for long-term social relations and activities which are sustainable, inclusive and equitable in a wider perception of the term (environmentally, socially and economically). The method adopted to address this aim involves a content analysis of available academic literature, with focus on the planning sustainable development, built environment, social sustainability, and urban planning fields. The findings demonstrate that in spite of some opposing evidence, many studies have confirmed that there has been displacement of the debate on the term of ‘sustainability’ from ‘ecological and environmental aspects into social and economic aspects’. It is related to how the community feel safe and comfortable living in their own communities, how have they felt of proud of the place where they live. The aim of the paper is to improve our understanding of current theories and practices of planning sustainable development and discuss whether the approach of sustainable development aligns with social sustainability objectives.","PeriodicalId":31123,"journal":{"name":"Emara Indonesian Journal of Architecture","volume":"2 1","pages":"21-26"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69683015","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a commercial corridor, it is filled by rows of shophouses that sells both variety of goods and secondary needs of most citizens in Surabaya. Initially, the existing buildings are the dutch heritage building which were converted into a shophouses. Yet, there are several shop buildings that has been renovated and reconstructed by the owner into a modern style building. As a corridor which is located both in the developing region and high density of activity, the reducing of the colonial heritage buildings is feared to eliminate the visual distinctiveness of the region. This can also be an unfavorable precedent for other buildings owners when renovating or reconstructing their buildings. So that, their vulnerable heritage building will be reconstructed into a new modern style building that can eliminate the historical value in it. T his study aims to find an alternate facade design of shophouses in the corridor as a commercial building which can be used as a reference in designing a new one. The used methodology is descriptive qualitative through technical analysis of visual character of colonial buildings. The elements observed included style, color, texture, pattern, and scale of the building. These findings are expected to provide a guidance to the community, including architects and building owners in reconstructing the existing shophouses especially in the road corridors of Songoyudan and generally in the area of the Old Town Hall Kembang Jepun Surabaya.","PeriodicalId":31123,"journal":{"name":"Emara Indonesian Journal of Architecture","volume":"2 1","pages":"13-20"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69682621","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In line with the city government's program, the existence of the green line in the corridor of the main streets should be remarked to develop green space. Consequently, visual objects on the green line, such as vegetation, need to meet the rules of the visual aesthetic arrangement based on the characteristics of the corridor and visual capabilities of observers. Jalan Mastrip is one of the main streets, which is crucial for the city economy and also becomes a city entrance of Surabaya. It has potential to give a positive ‘first impression‘ for its users. Padahal masjid pada umumnya hanya mengakomodasi 1 (satu) jenis tipologi saja. Bagaimana Masjid Jami’ Malang dapat menggabungkan beberapa tipologi fasade dan mentransformasikannya ke dalam bentukan-bentukan yang baru inilah, yang menjadi menarik untuk dikaji. Penelitian dilakukan melalui sejumlah kajian literatur dengan pustaka-pustaka yang relevan, serta diperkuat dengan observasi langsung terhadap obyek. Metode yang digunakan untuk mengkaji hal tersebut ialah metode deskriptif analisis. Hasil kajian menyatakan bahwa penggabungan bentuk antara ciri universalitas dan lokalitas, dilakukan dengan cara menampilkan atap kubah (dome) , iwan, arches serta minaret secara bertahap sebagai ciri universalitas masjid dunia, dengan tetap mempertahankan atap tajug, serta penggunaan material kayu sebagai ciri kelokalitasan daerah.","PeriodicalId":31123,"journal":{"name":"Emara Indonesian Journal of Architecture","volume":"1 1","pages":"69-77"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69682538","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
