The two novellas concern the assimilation of a Senegalese woman in the French society. Ourika is a young woman raised and educated in an aristocratic environment, while Diouana, the protagonist of Sembène’s story, who works as a maid, is illiterate. But the difference between the two women disappears as racism emerges. Using Fanon and Bhabha, this study focuses on the following aspects: Commodification and the loss of self; stigmatization and the protagonist as the Other; alienation and death; and suppressed voices and posthumous narratives. The essay concludes with a discussion of the significance of the struggles of the two protagonists, by extension, for Francophone African writers in the postcolonial context.","PeriodicalId":311064,"journal":{"name":"Dalhousie French Studies","volume":"119 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132559422","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"A Madame Bovary for a New Millennium: Leïla Slimani’s Dans le jardin de l’ogre (2014)","authors":"H. Christiansen","doi":"10.7202/1089968ar","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.7202/1089968ar","url":null,"abstract":"Best known for her 2016 suspense novel, Chanson douce, Leïla Slimani first attracted attention for her novel about a female sex addict, Dans le jardin de l’ogre. Having realized that women never figure in media accounts of sexual addiction, she immersed herself in Leo Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina, François Mauriac’s Thérèse Desqueyroux, Joseph Kessel’s Belle de jour, and Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary. Reviewers of Dans le jardin de l’ogre often mention the latter in passing, and Slimani herself has identified Emma as one of her favorite heroines, but thus far there has been only one scholarly study that deals with specific connections between the two novels. While they seem unlikely bedfellows on the surface—Flaubert’s text is a traditional nineteenth-century roman de formation that unfolds in linear fashion, while Slimani’s is decidedly modern in subject and in its slippage back and forth in time—a close reading reveals numerous uncanny similarities in narrative technique, characterization, themes, and motifs. It is hard to imagine a more promising pairing to test Julia Kristeva’s theory that “tout texte se construit comme mosaïque de citations, tout texte est absorption et transformation d’un autre texte” (85). This study shows that Dans le jardin de l’ogre is one of those mosaics that has “absorbed” many of Madame Bovary’s salient features and “transformed” them into something quite modern and distinctive.","PeriodicalId":311064,"journal":{"name":"Dalhousie French Studies","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127089563","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

During the film, the name becomes taboo. Thirteen years later, a similar phenomenon occurs in La pluie d’été (1990) when the verse “I, son of David, King of Jerusalem” from Ecclesiastes repeats regularly throughout the text and generates a feeling of discomfort and embarrassment. Furthermore, in this novel, characters are “polynymous”, shifting from one identity to another, one name to another. Here, the act of naming is entirely unique and provokes a deep sense of fear that manifests in the text through the characters’ paroxysmal reactions: cries, screams, howls, and silence. The main focus of this article will be to study the source of this malaise and to determine the prohibitions and taboos that lead to this incredible loss of speech. Thus, in the first part of the article, I examine how and why Duras populates Le camion and La pluie d’été with biblical, Jewish names and the way in which “Abraham” and the “the son of David” in these works become concentrated into a single word and identity: “Jew” or Juden”. In the second part of the article, I explore how the characters’ paroxysmal reactions relate to the difficulty and importance of assigning a name, both in terms of individual identity, but also in terms of the prohibitions and interdictions against divine representation and verbalization in the Hebrew Bible.","PeriodicalId":311064,"journal":{"name":"Dalhousie French Studies","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125351950","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This existential silence is the defining moment both in the philosophy of Albert Camus and in the literary work of Franz Kafka. Silence manifests itself in the absurd as well as in the Kafkaesque, but those two perspectives differ in their implications with respect to hope. Kafka’s main protagonists in his three big novels are marked by the fluctuation between hope and fear. The uncertainty of their fate contrasts with the relative stability of Camus’s figures within his philosophy of the absurd. In contrast to prior research, the mythical figure of Sisyphus is here prominently considered. Sisyphus is without hope, whereas Josef K. (The Trial) is bound to it as to fear itself. The comparison of the two figures deviates from the classical analyses of Politzer (1960), Darzins (1960), Gillon (1961) and Bryant (1969), but also from newer approaches such as Viqez Jimenez (2017). Although the topic of hope has been analysed in some of these works, the article stresses the importance of hope in a terminological triplet. It examines hope, fear and silence in a philosophical perspective as a general approach to the Absurd and the Kafkaesque.","PeriodicalId":311064,"journal":{"name":"Dalhousie French Studies","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114565667","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Among his bilingual texts Green published an important homoerotic play, Sud (1953), which he later translated into English as South (1959) in collaboration with his sister, Anne Green. Although the homoerotic nature of the characters of Green’s novels has been examined in certain critical texts, the evolution of this homoeroticism in Green’s self-translated play, Sud / South, has not yet been studied in detail. This article will, therefore, show how Green radically transformed the drama of homosexual love from his first play, Sud (1953), in his self-translation, South (1959), and the effects of these linguistic changes on the reader. More specifically, this critical analysis will demonstrate how Green used a translative approach of the moins-dit in order to conceal a substantial portion of his original French play’s central intrigue. Because of multiple omissions, revisions, and additions in self-translation, Ian Wiczewski’s love for the young Erik Mac Clure, as well as Édouard Broderick’s homosexual orientation, are less visible in South than in Sud. Consequently, Sud and South appear as two very disparate versions of the same text.","PeriodicalId":311064,"journal":{"name":"Dalhousie French Studies","volume":"119 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133413258","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is the translation of these two aspects that leads to the creation of a new narrative about homosexual Franco-Moroccan identity. This narrative, in turn, reveals the instability of a model of identification subjected to a normalizing sexual apparatus controlling bodies and minds in a place where homosexuality is still punishable by law. This renders the identification process for the two main characters of the novel particularly problematic as they can no longer sustain it without going back to the sources of foundational myths and more particularly to the original murder in Islam. This article argues that the killing of one character by the other goes back to the original murder of Abel by Cain, a model which becomes emancipated from the Western Oedipal complex, translating a new conception of a love relation between two male characters. By so doing, it calls for a reevaluation of the normativity imposed by the king who is using his power based on a patriarchal interpretation of religious legitimacy in view of political gain.","PeriodicalId":311064,"journal":{"name":"Dalhousie French Studies","volume":"97 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132494516","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, according to Jean Mouttapa who wrote the preface for Cheng’s book L’Un vers l’autre. En voyage avec Victor Segalen (2008), there exists a “spiritual affinity” between the two authors that connects them in a fundamental way. Focusing on this unusual bond, this article examines how the dual destinations of travel – lieu (Other/Elsewhere) and milieu (Self/Home) – are represented in two poetic creations, namely “Perdre le Midi Quotidien” by Segalen and “Ultime voyage” by Cheng. At the intersection of French and Chinese, the travelers-poets trace and translate the courses of their internal progress through their physical displacements. Drawing on essential concepts from Segalen’s theory such as the Divers and the Exote, my analysis reveals the extent to which Segalen and Cheng’s translingual poetics serve as a powerful vehicle to display and disseminate their positive view of the Self-Other bond.","PeriodicalId":311064,"journal":{"name":"Dalhousie French Studies","volume":"574 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115912078","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
