Voices take turns to discuss Mister T.'s state ; to diagnose his disease, to observe, to question, to accuse, to communicate the suffering of this father, this husband, this elderly man who spent all his time in geriatric services and then finds himself having to stay in a retirement home where he forgets everything little by little, even his old age. These voices elude the readers and the fiction establishes a kind of intermittent confusion which does contravene the structure of the tale. This article studies the way in which Olivia Rosenthal manages to implement the injunction of tale's title. To this end, it interrogates the narrative and poetic methods allowing old age and the elderly man to be present even though the latter seems to be disappearing because of the continued attacks of the former.","PeriodicalId":311064,"journal":{"name":"Dalhousie French Studies","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139244709","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Death throes serve, first, as a springboard to revisit the family past. Such a trajectory is bruising but marked with discoveries. Death throes also lead the narrator to reassess her relationship with her parent, at the very time when she must endorse the responsibilities that care demands. In Tremblay’s autofiction, the relation with the dying father bathes in gentleness; the relation with the mother, on the contrary, is characterized by tension, as the latter goes from craziness to Alzheimer’s disease. The situation is reversed in Georges’ novel. The narrator will progressively rebuild a connexion with her mother, while remaining distant from her father, whom she does not know to be dying. Finally, in each novel the death of the parents generates reflection on the artistic progression, or even destiny, of the narrator.","PeriodicalId":311064,"journal":{"name":"Dalhousie French Studies","volume":"229 ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139243428","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus, the reflux of humanity that stirs Mauritian female writer Ananda Devi's typical imaginary of her marginalized characters, relies on their abilities to interact with their age, without making it a static accessory of the narrative but rather a resource to be explored. In this context of destabilizing points of view, Les jours vivants (Gallimard, 2013) explores, in a singular way, how old age can reshape life – and become a form of resistance – by drawing on the “the primary and primordial energy that is nature” (p. 180), in particular by the means of the vegetal which, according to our thesis, would capture the desire to exist beyond the constraints of the “last age”.","PeriodicalId":311064,"journal":{"name":"Dalhousie French Studies","volume":"44 ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139242979","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thirty years after the death of his grandmother, the author revisits her possessions and habits, creating a portrait of a modest and altruistic woman. Through these examinations, the author realizes how his grandmother has forged his personality and prepared him to face the contingencies of existence. Through the lens of old age, she encompasses the complexity of the relation of the self with the world, family, language, and transmission of experience—all that with objectivity and humility, the goal being to tell the truth that has been hidden for so long. Thus, through her heroine who for the first time, at an advanced age, gets to have a life of her own, the writer shows that rather than failure, ageing can also be an opportunity to become oneself at last—though literature doesn’t tend to cast a such light on old age. Given how the content and the goal of the life’s story meet in this novel, I will analyse how Abla Farhoud creates a new form of writing of the self through the point of view of old age.","PeriodicalId":311064,"journal":{"name":"Dalhousie French Studies","volume":"5 ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139243600","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In L’exil selon Julia by Gisèle Pineau, the journey of the eponymous character, an elderly migrant of Caribbean origin, demonstrates how this triple identity can generate and exacerbate a sense of otherness. This article not only highlights the work of nostalgia and melancholy in a new environment, but it also analyzes Julia’s creativity and resilience in creating her own Guadeloupe in France.","PeriodicalId":311064,"journal":{"name":"Dalhousie French Studies","volume":"24 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139246204","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Utopian and heterotopic spaces, otherwise referred to as « counter-spaces » are perceived here as spaces of resistance: « places that oppose all others, that are intended in some way to erase, neutralize or purify them » (Foucault 24). In the end, the relationship to reality is different for everyone, but, according to Poulin, balance is essential.This paper seeks to show how the characters of the Driver in La tournée d’automne and Jack in Les yeux bleus de Mistassini find their own equilibrium thanks to « counter-spaces », thereby escaping the drama of the ageing body. By providing a refuge for the characters to reflect on themselves and their relationship to others and to life, these “counter-spaces” contribute to their search for identity and to their resilience against the fear of erasure.","PeriodicalId":311064,"journal":{"name":"Dalhousie French Studies","volume":"3 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139245191","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Les femmes en particulier ont été affectées de manière négative par les idées dévalorisantes qui résultent des intersections entre le vieillissement et le genre. Depuis les années 1990, cependant, un corpus croissant d'analyses académiques et d'oeuvres de fiction et auto/biographiques a commencé à contester les clichés qui dénigrent les personnes âgées. Dolce Agonia de Nancy Huston et L'heure mauve de Michèle Ouimet, par exemple, mettent en avant diverses réponses à l'expérience du vieillissement, de la maladie et de la perte. La structure polyphonique de ces romans crée un dialogue complexe sur des sujets importants liés au vieillissement et les deux textes relèvent le défi lancé par Lynne Segal “[to] think again, think more imaginatively, about ageing” (2).","PeriodicalId":311064,"journal":{"name":"Dalhousie French Studies","volume":"52 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139244168","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
