Facing an imposed redefinition with the reform of the city, new forms of coexistence, where figure of the dandy as a synonym of euphoria and decadence appears. In view of the quantity and diversity of themes and genres (poetry, short story, criticism, and essay), I had to choose, not without difficulties, some texts that I considered relevant for literary studies, both for their uniqueness and for their poetic conceptions and aesthetical formulations. After introducing the summary, I comment on the studies by Mario de Andrade (“A dama ausente”) and Jorge de Lima (“A margem de Euclides”); a short story here represented by Maria Franco (“Distância”). The concision and lucidity of Alvaro Lins, as a critic and an essayist, are exemplarily shown in “O critico Tristao de Athayde”. Based on these assumptions, this paper analyses the trajectory of the writer and jurist Darcy Azambuja as contributor to the literary magazine Provincia de Sao Pedro , and debates his presence (or his absence) in A Historia da Literatura do Rio Grande do Sul (1956), by the historian Guilhermino Cesar.
