(“Man With The Golden Arm” Donates Blood That Has Saved 2 Million Babies, 2015). How exactly did Harrison save over 2 million lives? He donated blood 1,173 times throughout his life (James Harrison, 2020). Learning about Harrison’s contribution inspired me to hold a blood drive when I was in 5th grade, but my young mind still had many questions about the blood journey from donor to recipient. When I was finally old enough to tour the San Diego Blood Bank, I got a glimpse of that process – and learned just how much of a need there is for increased blood donations and education.","PeriodicalId":310759,"journal":{"name":"The Pre-Collegiate Global Health Review","volume":"97 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122410784","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It infects up to 390 million people annually: a 30-fold increase over the past 50 years. The virus, DENV, has four serotypes, meaning one person could potentially be infected four separate times (World Mosquito Program, 2020). While the disease usually causes flu-like symptoms, a variation called severe dengue claims about 20% of those infected. Around 25,000 deaths are reported world-wide annually (WHO, 2019).","PeriodicalId":310759,"journal":{"name":"The Pre-Collegiate Global Health Review","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123586972","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

But more than 40 years later, this disease is still infecting children in countries like Afghanistan and Pakistan. While we are close to globally eradicating the disease (95 total cases reported in 2019), the fact that it has taken more than 4 decades to get to this point is not only disheartening but embarrassing (Martin, 2019). In addition, polio is one of several diseases that have been eradicated in the US, but not worldwide. Rubella, measles, and diphtheria are just a few examples of diseases that still affect children worldwide (Vanderslott et al., 2013). According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 20 million children worldwide remain under/un vaccinated and at risk for fatal diseases (WHO, 2020). Although this number is declining yearly, it is still a figure that cannot be ignored and serves as an indication for the need of improved global vaccination systems.","PeriodicalId":310759,"journal":{"name":"The Pre-Collegiate Global Health Review","volume":"134 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133604697","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nationwide, 1 in 5 menstruating teens struggles to buy period products (Thinx & PERIOD, 2019). Those who should be focusing on growing and developing are instead worrying whether they can afford to maintain a normal biological process safely. Among these teens, 84% have either missed or know someone who has missed school due to period poverty (Thinx & PERIOD, 2019). As a result, they struggle to access full and proper education because students would rather stay at home than face embarrassment, discomfort, and pain. The school system is supposed to be a haven, fostering both education and well-being. However, stigma combined with a lack of care instead leads to young people skipping or missing class on account of something they cannot control.","PeriodicalId":310759,"journal":{"name":"The Pre-Collegiate Global Health Review","volume":"179 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132030512","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As of June 30, 2020, the world has reported approximately 10 million confirmed cases of COVID-19, of which 2.5 million have been reported in the US (WHO Coronavirus, 2020). Although many people understand the coronavirus and its symptoms, there are people who do not fully comprehend the dangers of the virus. In the US itself, 14% of adults stated that they would avoid seeking treatment due to concerns over cost if a family member had a fever and dry cough, whereas only 9% stated they would avoid seeking treatment if a family member was suspected to be infected by the coronavirus. This discrepancy indicates that many adults do not fully understand that fever and dry cough are symptoms of the virus. More often than not, people who live in underprivileged communities have less awareness about health issues (Witters, 2020). So how do we help those with limited resources? The answer is community health workers.","PeriodicalId":310759,"journal":{"name":"The Pre-Collegiate Global Health Review","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114302344","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
