This work compares implications for user's psychological reactance and acceptance of two different types of error and their representations through feedback. Reactance and acceptance levels were measured after presenting feedback that allows a conclusion on the cause of an occurred error and feedback that fails to do so. It was found that reactance levels were significantly higher and acceptance levels significantly lower in the latter case. Suggestions for appropriate system design are discussed.","PeriodicalId":309823,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 28th Australian Conference on Computer-Human Interaction","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125306239","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper investigates the effects of correlation between features and target values on user confidence in data analytics-driven decision making. Our user study found that revealing the correlation between features and target variables affected user confidence in decision making significantly. Moreover, users felt more confident in decision making when correlation shared the same trend with the prediction model performance. These findings would help design intelligent user interfaces and evaluate the effectiveness of machine learning models in applications.","PeriodicalId":309823,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 28th Australian Conference on Computer-Human Interaction","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129944711","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite this, there is a paucity of research about the impact of ICT on the work-life balance (WLB) of construction managers. We employed an online survey and conducted three workshops with a major Australian construction company. This paper focuses specifically on the use of ICT and mobile technologies at work for work and home, and outcomes from the workshops. We offer design suggestions which highlight significant opportunities for the adaption or adoption of existing technology, and the design of novel technologies. These could reduce work repetition, workloads and work hours, as well as providing some separation from work at home, all of which could positively impact on the work life balance of managers working in site-based roles in construction.","PeriodicalId":309823,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 28th Australian Conference on Computer-Human Interaction","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124627418","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Current mental health chat services are mostly focused on crisis support and suicide prevention. In contrast this study is on a chat system for early help-seekers rather than acutely distressed individuals, and where these help-seekers chat with a peer rather than a counsellor. We conducted interviews, a focus group and a participatory design workshop with potential peer- supporters. Here we present the main themes and goals that emerged and discuss considerations for the development of the system.","PeriodicalId":309823,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 28th Australian Conference on Computer-Human Interaction","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121393742","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite the growing interest in such systems, their evaluation poses a challenge because of the radically different nature of art and HCI. In this paper, we describe the design of an interactive art system that allows people to create music by playing or stopping certain melodies using body gestures. We report the evaluation of participants' experience through a two-phase study that employed mixed methods, including the Positive and Negative Affects Schedule (PANAS) questionnaire, and semi-structured interviews followed by thematic analysis. Our evaluation revealed consistency between certain emotional responses recorded in the questionnaire and the interviews. Moreover, the data from the interviews exposed the importance of both balancing control and unpredictability in interactive art systems, and the relevance of the social relationships among participants. These results support the use of mixed methods and self-report measures when evaluating user experience with interactive art systems.","PeriodicalId":309823,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 28th Australian Conference on Computer-Human Interaction","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126784736","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Health issues such as obesity are significant ongoing concerns for governments and society across the world, which can be improved through increasing the exercise activities of the population. The problem of lack of motivation for and engagement in exercise is well known, and so identifying techniques to improve engagement in exercise activities is worthy of investigation. This project reports on an initiative designed to increase both the duration of exercise activity and the intensity of exercise activity, through a gamified exercise solution. Preliminary results indicate that augmenting traditional exercise equipment with gamified elements can increase the time spent exercising, when compared to non-gamified exercise equipment.","PeriodicalId":309823,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 28th Australian Conference on Computer-Human Interaction","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133760103","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Previous studies concerning waiting rooms place little emphasis on current and desired emotional responses of stakeholders be they staff, patients or clinicians. The study presented in this paper demonstrates the use of emotional goal modelling when designing for the patient experience in a Melbourne based healthcare provider's waiting room. Emphasis is placed on how stakeholders would like to feel when engaging with future technology and services. Focus groups, probes and mapping methods were used to elicit staff members' future goals and emotions surrounding service delivery to their clients with particular focus on how technology can connect their patients with appropriate services, offering enhanced experiences. We present our preliminary findings concerning stakeholder experiences using goal models and rich picture mappings. Lastly, we offer a variety of methods that are suitable to the context of capturing key stakeholder emotions surrounding technology in healthcare setting waiting rooms.","PeriodicalId":309823,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 28th Australian Conference on Computer-Human Interaction","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132777084","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The design framework couples ADHD patient challenge areas to technological opportunities and it provides a set of practical design strategies for developing successful assistive technologies for people with ADHD. The framework is based on empirical studies, ADHD research, and related work on assistive technologies. We map existing assistive technologies and potential new research efforts to the framework concepts. This way we show how it is used to support and advance the research and development of novel assistive technologies for the ADHD domain.","PeriodicalId":309823,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 28th Australian Conference on Computer-Human Interaction","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132277914","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
