Whilst the management of knee OA is usually multidisciplinary, the use of comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) for this condition is still limited. Given this background, with this systematic review, we summarized the current literature regarding the importance of CGA in people affected by knee OA. A systematic search across several databases was run until 10th April 2022 and updated on 21st November 2022 for any study investigating the use of CGA in patients with knee OA. The data were summarized descriptively. Among 295 articles initially included, three studies made in the context of the osteoarthritis initiative (OAI) were included. All the three studies used the OAI multidimensional prognostic index (MPI), a composite score derived from the CGA. Higher MPI values were associated with a higher risk of falls, cardiovascular conditions, and fractures across a follow-up period of 8 years and after adjusting for potential confounders. In conclusion, in this systematic review we summarized the current evidence of CGA in knee OA, finding that the MPI, a CGA derived tool, could be useful to early find people at higher risk of conditions that are associated with knee OA and therefore that can be the target of personalized interventions for preventing these conditions.","PeriodicalId":30930,"journal":{"name":"Geriatric Care","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45649431","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its prevalence is higher in over-65 aged population than in other age groups. In the elderly, pSS diagnosis comes up against a whole series of critical points that may favor its misdiagnosis. With tertiary care setups in low to middle income countries administering care to a burgeoning population of elderly patients, elder abuse has now become increasingly apparent. This case report examines elder mistreatment in a drowsy patient living with her son, who had recently appointed a private nurse for her care. Our healthcare team proceeded to provide the best available medical and community resources in the care and intervention of the patient.","PeriodicalId":30930,"journal":{"name":"Geriatric Care","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44617808","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The intravenous administration of very high doses of vitamin C was proposed as a treatment for severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pneumonia. Unlike low vitamin C doses, very high doses (>6 gr daily) can promote H2O2 formation, oxidation of hemoglobin to methemoglobin and, eventually, hemolytic anemia in patients with favism. We here describe the case of a 77-year old man hospitalized for severe COVID-19 pneumonia and treated with a mean daily dose of 9.5 gr of intravenous vitamin C during the first 6 days. He developed methemoglobinemia and hemolytic anemia, which improved after interruption of vitamin C treatment. Previously unrecognized glucose- 6-phophate-dehydrogenase deficiency was diagnosed. This first case of vitamin Cinduced hemolytic anemia in a COVID-19 patient indicates the need of a screening for glucose-6-phosphate-dehydrogenase deficiency before treatment with very high vitamin C doses or for long period.","PeriodicalId":30930,"journal":{"name":"Geriatric Care","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45441199","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Increasing research has shown that this condition is associated with a higher risk of several health problems. The aim of this survey made among the members of the Societa' Italiana Geriatria Ospedale e Territorio (SIGOT) is to explore how far hearing loss is known in the Italian geriatric community and how to develop a collaboration with other services. A short survey (taking approximately 5 min to complete) was freely available on the SIGOT website and disseminated using social channels. The questionnaire was available during the whole year of 2021. The questionnaire specifically addressed general characteristics/ demographics, general attention to hearing loss problem in older people and relationships with the National Health System, and personal opinions regarding hearing loss. A total of 122 participants (mainly females and aging between 61-70 years) from all Italian Regions were included. The SIGOT members answered that they consider hearing loss as clinically relevant is always important (55.7%). Unfortunately, many members had not audiological centers or specialists available. Moreover, 38.5% of SIGOT members reported that the possibility of correction of hearing loss with prostheses or cochlear implants in older people is very good for older patients and that in 87.7% a significant improvement in quality of life was observed. The interest in hearing loss problems in older people perceived by the SIGOT members is elevated, but some barriers, particularly in the availability of other specialists and in the services given by National Health System are still very limited.","PeriodicalId":30930,"journal":{"name":"Geriatric Care","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44088686","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is a significant public health issue because sleeping disorder leads to cause depression, diabetes, cardiovascular, Alzheimer’s disease. Currently, music therapy might be a good choice instead of western medicines for the treatment of a sleeping disorder. This short communication describes the background of sleeping disorder, music therapy, and its research progress as well as the future development. A simple systematic search of publications in PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and google search without language restriction is performed. Because of the little finding on the music therapy for sleep disorders in present literature, therefore, there is a short communication written by some literature reviews before starting a novel study of sleeping disorders for elderly people.","PeriodicalId":30930,"journal":{"name":"Geriatric Care","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43614247","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Aim of the present investigation was addressing prevalence and prognostic significance of aortic valve stenosis (AVS) in older residents of long-term care facilities (LTCF). For the planned recruitment of 500 LTCF guests of a German metropolitan area, study investigators were trained and in the performance of a cardiologic examination and of the comprehensive geriatric assessment- based multidimensional prognostic index (MPI). After five attempts to obtain permission to conduct the study in 30 institutions, patients’ recruitment was stopped with 22 participants included from one institution. AVS was suspected in two patients, in agreement with the reported prevalence data. The MPI value correlated with social support (P=0.002) and geriatric syndromes (P=0.004). This structured attempt at investigating presence and prognostic signature of AVS in older LTCF guests was challenged by logistic obstacles strongly hindering diagnosis of potentially treatable conditions which, if undisclosed, negatively impact on survival and quality of life.","PeriodicalId":30930,"journal":{"name":"Geriatric Care","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46200820","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
