Here a particular advancement in adjusting the antenna loss parameters is highlighted. Two methods that enable estimation of the antenna loss are utilized to update the calibration parameters. The impact of the new parameters is evaluated with respect to synthesized antenna temperature which is based on the simulator developed for the Aquarius instrument. The results indicate that the new parameters yield measurements which are significantly closer to the simulated values over the life-time of the mission. This suggests that the new parameters indeed improve the performance of the zero-baseline measurement of SMOS which improves the overall accuracy and stability of the SMOS brightness temperature products.","PeriodicalId":309298,"journal":{"name":"2014 13th Specialist Meeting on Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing of the Environment (MicroRad)","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133180325","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unlike other microwave imagers, the GMI noise diodes on the lower frequency channels as well as black-body hot and cold sky views providing four calibration points rather than two. The dual calibration system enables on-board trending of non-linearity, as well independent cross-checking of each calibration element for stability and anomalous behavior. One important benefit of the dual calibration system is the direct evaluation of noise diode behavior on-orbit. For systems that depend solely on noise diodes for calibration, validation of the noise diode performance has to be done vicariously, using the earth as the reference. This paper presents the pre-flight and early on-orbit calibration performance of the noise diodes. We address stability of the noise diodes, and draw conclusions of continued on-orbit noise diode performance based on the ground and early flight measurements.","PeriodicalId":309298,"journal":{"name":"2014 13th Specialist Meeting on Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing of the Environment (MicroRad)","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133412785","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The two microwave radiometers on the satellite are the NASA Aquarius (AQ, L-band 1.4 GHz) and the CONAE MicroWave Radiometer (MWR, Ka-band 36.5 GHz V-& H-pol and K-band 23.8 GHz H-pol). The mission science objective is to provide high-resolution global sea surface salinity (SSS) maps every 7-days, which are derived using the AQ combined L-band radiometer/scatterometer. The application of L-band radiometry to measure SSS is a difficult task, and there are many corrections that must be made correctly to obtain accurate SSS data. One of the major error sources is the effect of ocean roughness that “warms” the ocean brightness temperature (Tb) by 0.28 K. In this paper, an alternative sea surface roughness correction algorithm is presented that uses a new semi-empirical Radiative Transfer Model (RTM) to estimate the ocean emissivity. This RTM has been tuned using 1-years of observed AQ and MWR Tb's and corresponding atmospheric and oceanic environmental conditions from numerical weather and oceanographic models. Results of independent comparisons (not used in the RTM tuning process) will be presented between the AQ scatterometer derived ocean roughness correction and the MWR roughness correction algorithm. Also, SSS retrievals using these two independent approaches will be compared to an oceanographic salinity model, known as Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM) salinity.","PeriodicalId":309298,"journal":{"name":"2014 13th Specialist Meeting on Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing of the Environment (MicroRad)","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125715538","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These noise sources measure a high excess noise ratio (ENR) of 17 dB, 9.6 dB and 6 dB at 90 GHz, 130 GHz and 168 GHz, respectively and are to be used for internal calibration in the high-frequency millimeter-wave nadir-viewing radiometers, which are expected to provide increased spatial resolution of wet-tropospheric path delay correction for coastal regions and inland water. The noise sources meet the ENR, radiometric stability, mass and size requirements, which enables us to achieve internal calibration for the high-frequency millimeter-wave channels. Furthermore, we have developed a novel approach that utilizes a MMIC LNA as a noise source in the 168 GHz frequency band. Both of these noise sources have demonstrated excellent stability of 0.07% per hour. This translates to <; 0.1K per hour TA stability for cold ocean scene.","PeriodicalId":309298,"journal":{"name":"2014 13th Specialist Meeting on Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing of the Environment (MicroRad)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130323605","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is focused on the characterization of ice clouds, convection and snowfall. It will extend the capabilities of the Ice Cloud Imager (ICI) thanks to enhanced polarimetry by: Measuring both orthogonal polarizations in all `window' channels, measuring the full polarization vector for the lowest window channel, at 157GHz, including a 874 GHz channel to help bridge the gap between the millimetric and the far infrared measurements. The observation is based on a conical scan sub-millimeter wave instrument. The ground resolution is 12Km from 800Km altitude, on a “METOP-like” polar orbit. The full satellite is in the 500Kg/500W range. The channels frequencies range from 157GHz (with polarimetric capabilities) to 874GHz. The paper puts the emphasis on the impact of the polarization measurement capability onto the instrument architecture, in particular the antenna: in a first approach the offset antenna configuration has been explored, with one or two 157 GHz horns. Then a Cassegrain antenna has been preferred in order to meet the stringent cross polarization requirement. Finally, for accommodation and antenna performance reasons, the antenna has been split in a Cassegrain antenna for low frequencies and a separate small offset antenna for the two upper ones. The calibration system, also split in two parts, is depicted and the overall instrument implementation is shown. Finally the paper identifies the remaining technology steps needed to open the way to this highly accurate instrument: Proof of actual low cross-pol horn (design, manufacturing, verification); wide band Stoke parameters acquisition, aiming at a “157GHz radiometer with digital backend”: refinement of full Stoke parameters calibration.","PeriodicalId":309298,"journal":{"name":"2014 13th Specialist Meeting on Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing of the Environment (MicroRad)","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114978503","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Currently used sm retrieval algorithms (H- and V-pol Single Channel Algorithm, SCAH and SCAV; Microwave Polarization Difference Algorithm, MPDA) were computed over Pampas Plains, Argentina. The methodology of a novel Bayesian algorithm developed is also presented, and its results are contrasted with the previous algorithms. Finally, performance metrics for each algorithms were derived using SMOS Level-2 sm and τ as benchmark products. The new Bayesian approach provide the sm retrieval algorithm that exhibited the lowest ubRMSE (0.115m3/m3), though very close to USDA SCA and SCAV ubRMSE (0.116m3/m3). Nevertheless, some improvements are discussed in Section 4 that might increase significantly the Bayesian algorithm performance.","PeriodicalId":309298,"journal":{"name":"2014 13th Specialist Meeting on Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing of the Environment (MicroRad)","volume":"85 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114268847","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The algorithm is based on the identification of fixed relationships relating the Integrated Liquid Water Content (ILWC) and the Integrated Water Vapor Content (IWVC) retrieved from brightness temperatures measured at two frequencies. Results indicate that the cloud classification thresholds, identified from long-term radiosonde observations (RAOBS), apply to the radiometric measurements as well. The probability of occurrences of each CT, as calculated from RAOBS and MWR data, is found to be in good agreement. Results also show that rain events occur only in presence of two out of the four cloud types considered (Cloud Type CT3 and CT4).","PeriodicalId":309298,"journal":{"name":"2014 13th Specialist Meeting on Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing of the Environment (MicroRad)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128604411","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Other applications of its data over land and the cryosphere are being developed. Combining its measurements with existing and upcoming L-band sensors will allow for long term studies. For that purpose, the radiometers calibration is critical. Aquarius measurements are currently calibrated over the oceans. They have been found too cold at the low end (celestial sky) of the brightness temperature scale, and too warm at the warm end (land and ice). We assess the impact of the antenna pattern model on the biases and propose a correction. We re-calibrate Aquarius measurements using the corrected antenna pattern and measurements over the Sky and oceans. The performances of the new calibration are evaluated using measurements over well instrument land sites.","PeriodicalId":309298,"journal":{"name":"2014 13th Specialist Meeting on Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing of the Environment (MicroRad)","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121559293","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
