This work focuses on the reduction of this Gibbs-like contamination in brightness temperature scenes using an alternative image reconstruction approach. This technique is based on sampling the signal at the nodal points, that is, at those points at which the oscillating interference causes the minimum distortion to the geophysical signal. The method has been successfully tested using ocean views significantly reducing general ripples and sidelobes in the contaminated brightness temperature images. In addition, it reduces the standard deviation of the difference between the SMOS measurements and the theoretical model by 1K, which is crucial to improve the quality of the sea surface salinity retrievals.","PeriodicalId":309298,"journal":{"name":"2014 13th Specialist Meeting on Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing of the Environment (MicroRad)","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133735760","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The approach is a variation of the G-matrix solution that uses the measured spatial response of the array-e.g. as measured on the antenna range-as the basis for image synthesis. But rather than attempting inversions of the entire array-a process very sensitive to errors-a new approach is presented which corrects the visibility responses of the array piecewise. The technique starts by assuming that the response of a given visibility sample in a STAR array will deviate from that of an idealized model in a manner that can be characterized by just a few low-order spatial harmonics. This presumes that imperfections of the antenna elemental radiation patterns and of the interferometric fringe frequencies are dominated by errors which are largely contained within the physical area of the elemental antenna apertures and of their immediate surroundings-due to mechanical tolerances, mutual coupling, scattering, etc.. As such, it should be possible to correct anomalies in the measured response of a given visibility sample by combining it with its nearest neighbors on the U-V plane.","PeriodicalId":309298,"journal":{"name":"2014 13th Specialist Meeting on Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing of the Environment (MicroRad)","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117179908","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The intercalibration results indicate that AMSR2 has calibration difference, 5K at most, compared with TMI and the relative differences of some channels depend on observed scene temperature. There is no apparent seasonal variation and no undesirable discrepancy between daytime and nighttime orbits on the AMSR2 Tbs. The cause of the calibration difference is under investigation.","PeriodicalId":309298,"journal":{"name":"2014 13th Specialist Meeting on Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing of the Environment (MicroRad)","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116623740","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Use of these measurements containing undetected RFI results in erroneous geophysical parameter retrievals [1]. Various test-statistics such as the kurtosis are currently used to detect RFI. These are based on measurements of non-Gaussianity of the probability density function (pdf ) of the received radiometer signal [2,3]. Though the kurtosis was shown to be the best test-statistic for detecting a wide variety of RFI signal types, to date, only the kurtosis of real-valued signals has been applied to the problem of RFI detection. This paper investigates the use of the complex signal kurtosis in full-polarimetric radiometers for RFI detection.","PeriodicalId":309298,"journal":{"name":"2014 13th Specialist Meeting on Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing of the Environment (MicroRad)","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116724696","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, during this period the radiometric transfer function (radiometric counts-to-TA) was only valid for only a very short portion of main reflector deep space view. This paper discusses three methods of reconstructing the radiometric transfer function thereby providing a longer time series of Antenna Temperature (TA) for absolute calibration. Earth emission entering into the feed spillover region of the antenna pattern is acknowledged within this paper. The motivation of this work is for preparation of the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Microwave Imager (GMI) DSC maneuvers set for May of 2014.","PeriodicalId":309298,"journal":{"name":"2014 13th Specialist Meeting on Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing of the Environment (MicroRad)","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115245797","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We present a novel approach for the geolocation of SMOS RFI sources, based on the Direction of Arrival (DOA) estimation techniques normally used in the sensor array. The MUSIC DOA estimation algorithm is tailored for SMOS RFI source detection. Unfortunately the required horizontal resolution leads to a rather large antenna size in GEO which is unpractical for the traditional real aperture radiometers especially in low frequency bands. A new concept of clock scanning microwave interferometric radiometer (CS-MIR) using aperture synthesis provides an opportunity to resolve this problem. This paper describes some approaches of CS-MIR, specifically on aspects of array configuration, sampling patterns and potential GEO applications.","PeriodicalId":309298,"journal":{"name":"2014 13th Specialist Meeting on Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing of the Environment (MicroRad)","volume":"126 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127077023","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to better understand the relationships between the measured brightness temperature and the ice sheet parameters acquired data has been simulated by using an electromagnetic model and a Monte Carlo analysis in order to consider the natural variability of snow parameters. The e.m. model (Dense Medium Radiative Transfer theory under Quasi Cristalline Apporximation with Coherent potentials in multilayers version) was used to fit the angular trend of microwave observations collected at C- and L-band at Concordia Station. The analysis permitted to identify the variability in the snow density vertical profile as a major factor in determining the microwave signature of the snow emission. To further assess the impact of density profile, also the time-series of the sun microwave radiation reflected by the snowpack was simulated. This analysis pointed out that the coherent interference of the sun radiation among the layers can explain the particular sun signature found in Domex dataset.","PeriodicalId":309298,"journal":{"name":"2014 13th Specialist Meeting on Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing of the Environment (MicroRad)","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127405316","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
