The method, which is an extension of previously developed algorithms based on passive data, exploits the synergy of passive and active microwave signatures and model simulations of vegetation emissivity. The procedure is applied to a moderate event that occurred on the Paraná River Delta in 2013. We discuss the effect that the different spatial resolutions have for this hydrological application.","PeriodicalId":309298,"journal":{"name":"2014 13th Specialist Meeting on Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing of the Environment (MicroRad)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114225570","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This analysis has been carried out within the framework of an activity aiming at validating the EUMETSAT Hydrology Satellite Application Facility (H-SAF) soil moisture products derived from ASCAT over Europe and North Africa. The data acquired from 2010 to 2012 have been used. We have also considered the soil moisture maps predicted by a Land Surface Model, namely the ERA Interim/Land data set. Results demonstrate that, after a conversion of the H-SAF saturation index into a volumetric soil moisture, SMOS and ASCAT present a fairly good degree of correlation and their consistency depends on season, geographical zone and surface land cover. Moreover, to estimate the relative amount of error affecting the different sources of soil moisture maps, the Triple Collocation technique has been implemented. Such an approach has been applied also considering different conditions in terms of season, time of the day and data filtering approaches.","PeriodicalId":309298,"journal":{"name":"2014 13th Specialist Meeting on Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing of the Environment (MicroRad)","volume":"103 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116676175","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It contains a number of heterodyne receivers operating at frequencies between 118 and 664 GHz, some with dual polarisation. The design is modular and will allow further channels to be added in future, including 874 GHz. Submillimeter waves are very sensitive to scattering by ice particles, and the channels have been selected to allow the direct retrieval of various ice-cloud properties, including Ice Water Path (IWP) which is an important parameter in General Circulation Models (GCMs). ISMAR can also be used for surface emissivity and radiative transfer studies as it can view in multiple nadir and zenith directions. ISMAR has been developed as a satellite demonstrator for ICI (Ice Cloud Imager) due for launch in 2022 on the EUMETSAT Polar System - Second Generation satellites (EPS-SG). It can be used for testing and developing retrieval algorithms prior to launch, as well as for calibration/validation post-launch and specific scientific case studies. It is designed to operate on board the FAAM BAe-146 atmospheric research aircraft, which also carries a wide range of complementary remote-sensing and in-situ instrumentation including microwave radiometers, infra-red and visible spectrometers and cloud physics probes. The instrument is self-contained, allowing simple ground-based operation as well as the potential for installation on other aircraft. ISMAR is currently undergoing integration testing, and flight testing will take place from April 2014. An ISMAR science campaign is currently planned to take place in Goose Bay, Canada in 2015 to study the submillimeter signature of cirrus cloud.","PeriodicalId":309298,"journal":{"name":"2014 13th Specialist Meeting on Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing of the Environment (MicroRad)","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123525324","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To further improve the Level-3 retrieval algorithm, evaluation of the accuracy of the spatio-temporal variability of the SMOS Level 3 products (SMOSL3) is necessary. For this purpose, a comparative analysis of SMOS Level 3 ascending (SMOSL3-ASC) and descending (SMOSL3-DES) with a SSM product derived from the observations of the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR-E) computed by implementing the Land Parameter Retrieval Model (LPRM) algorithm, referred to as AMSR-LPRM, was conducted. The comparison of both products was made against SM-DAS-2 SSM products produced at ECMWF (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts) during the 03/2010-09/2011 period at the global scale. Global maps of correlation coefficient (R) were computed and averaged as a function of biome types. We found that SMOSL3 (ASC and DES) and AMSR-E are capable of reproducing the temporal dynamics of the SM-DAS-2 SSM products over most of the globe. The SMOSL3-ASC product performed better than the descending one but both were found to better capture the SSM temporal dynamics in highly vegetated biomes (“Tropical humid”, “Temperate Humid”, etc.) than AMSR-LPRM. AMSR-LPRM was more capable of capturing the temporal dynamics over arid (“Desert temperate” and “Desert tropical”) biomes. Finally, we show that the accuracy of the remotely sensed SSM products is strongly related to leaf area index (LAI). Both the SMOSL3 and AMSR-LPRM (slightly better) SSM products correlate best with the SM-DAS-2 products over biomes with an average value of LAI of ~ 1.86.","PeriodicalId":309298,"journal":{"name":"2014 13th Specialist Meeting on Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing of the Environment (MicroRad)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123683499","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hence, it provides vital information to be able to understand how the Earth's hydrological cycle responds to climate change. An analysis of the Aquarius (AQ) Sea Surface Salinity retrievals reveals that the spatial patterns of reduced SSS are correlated with the spatial distribution of rainfall. Therefore, it is important to understand the SSS changes due to seawater dilution by rain, and the associated near-surface salinity stratification. This paper focuses on the effects produced by rainfall on the AQ SSS retrieval, using a macro-scale rain impact model (RIM). This model is based on the superposition of a one-dimension, empirical, transient, near-surface salinity stratification profile model that relates the surface salinity to depth, rain accumulation and time since rainfall. Also, an AQ Rain Accumulation (AQ RA) product (based on CMORPH - CPC Morphing technique - global precipitation dataset), that provides the rainfall history for 24 hours (in half hour intervals) prior to the observation time and each AQ measurement cell is presented. This AQ RA product facilitates the identification of instantaneous rain and prior rainfall accumulations, which will aid in the investigation of rainfall effects on the SSS measurements. In this paper, RIM was validated by comparing measured and simulated AQ SSS for two months of 2012 in the Pacific Ocean over the ITCZ (Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone). Results are presented showing the high cross-correlation for the comparison between simulated SSS and retrieved SSS.","PeriodicalId":309298,"journal":{"name":"2014 13th Specialist Meeting on Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing of the Environment (MicroRad)","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115221861","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
