{"title":"Le monstre dans Thérèse Raquin d’Emile Zola: Représentations et esthétique","authors":"Elyssa Rebai","doi":"10.47743/aic-2022-1-0009","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.47743/aic-2022-1-0009","url":null,"abstract":"Thérèse Raquin, a novel of youth which constituted a decisive turning point in the romantic career of Émile Zola, surprises its reader by the omnipresence of the question of monstrosity and the polysemic use of the word “monster”, thereby revealing Zola’s will to exploit all the richness of the vocabulary and his refusal to confine the term to a fixed and restricted definition. The author uses the word “monster” in a multitude of senses, referring to architectural ugliness, bodily infirmity, behavioral deceit, in order to highlight the transgression of moral and social law. The novel is also striking by its dialectic of the ugly and the beautiful. Our article is therefore aiming to study the monster varieties related to space, bodies and characters in Thérèse Raquin, with some attention provided to the aesthetics of the monstrous. La lecture de Thérèse Raquin, roman de jeunesse qui a constitué un tournant décisif dans la carrière romanesque d’Emile Zola, étonne par l’omniprésence de la question de la monstruosité et de l’emploi polysémique du mot « monstre », décelant par là la volonté zolienne d’exploiter toute la richesse du vocabulaire et son refus de se confiner dans une définition figée et restreinte. L’auteur emploie en effet le mot « monstre » dans une multitude de sens qui renvoie à l’idée de la laideur architecturale, de l’infirmité corporelle, de la fourberie comportementale, mettant ainsi en relief cette transgression de la loi morale et sociale. Cette œuvre frappe également par cette dialectique saisissante du laid et du beau. În fapt, egoul e un mod subiectiv de a interacţiona cu universul înconjurător, fiind cauza haosului microcosmic. Egoul implică o manifestare a multiplicităţii înţeleasă ca separare (pe de o parte: eu-tu, eu-ceilalţi; pe de altă parte: un anumit eu în contradicţie cu un alt eu), iar contradicţiile şi suferinţa îşi au rădăcina în tendinţa de a privi existenţa individuală ca fiind separată de existenţa universală. În anumite poeme persane tradiţionale avem de-a face chiar cu o asociere a propriului ego cu un monstru lăuntric. Fiind înţeles ca o imagine distorsionată a unei anumite realităţi, monstrul lăuntric apare ca fiind o reprezentare denaturată a sinelui autentic. {"title":"Bitches and Witches: Grotesque Sexuality in Ovid’s Scylla (Metamorphoses 13.73014.74)","authors":"Sophie Emilia Seidler","doi":"10.47743/aic-2022-1-0002","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.47743/aic-2022-1-0002","url":null,"abstract":"As paradigmatic emblems of fantasy and imagination, creative freedom and poetic license, hybrid monsters in Ovid’s Metamorphoses preside over the author’s playful engagement with traditional aesthetic, moral, and societal values, and gendered ideals. This article aims at a subversive reading of one monstrous creature in the final pentad of Ovid’s epic: Scylla (Met. 13.730-14.74). As a monster, Scylla incorporates several misogynistic stereotypes (“doggishness”, puella dura, self-laceration, vagina dentata), but she eventually escapes the objectifying male gaze and finds rest in a stable, permanent shape that is no longer the feminine-gendered battlefield for male heroism. Breaking away from the conventional epic plot structure “male hero wins over feminized beasts and/or beautiful girls”, Ovid considers the Roman national hero Aeneas with but a minimum of attention, while nymphs and women take center stage: Scylla’s transformation from a girl into a monster and, finally, into a geological rock formation, is intertwined with tales about female solidarity and intimacy and about women’s sexual desire, rage, and revenge. Authors who seek literary fame may many a time face situations revealing the envy and hatred of their rivals or detractors, but hatred often becomes implacable when a woman author is involved. The most reputed case of misogyny among the 19th century writers is that of George Sand. The career of this woman author is marked by clashes and tensions, but despite the hatred and the envy of male writers, the animosity of her detractors and the constraining and degrading prejudices of her epoch, she did not surrender to despair or doubt, and never renounced her literary dreams. She fought against all odds and managed to prove that freedom and competence are not inaccessible to women, that genius can be female. La haine est au fondement de la création littéraire. Celui qui veut gagner une notoriété littéraire doit passer par une série de si tuations qui révèlent l’envie et la haine de ses détracteurs ou rivaux. Mais cette haine littéraire devient implacable lorsqu’il est question de femme auteur. Le cas qui attise le plus de feu de la misogynie littéraire, durant le XIXe siècle, est celui de George Sand. Le parcours de cette femme auteur n’est pas mené sans heurts et tensions, mais malgré la haine et l’envie de ses confrères masculins, l’animosité de ses détracteurs et les préjugés contraignants et avilissants de son époque, elle ne s’est jamais livrée au désespoir ni au doute et n’a jamais abandonné son rêve.
