Consequently, increasing research is now focused on stresses created due to these crosscultural situations in host countries of the western world and their solutions. This paper is an exploration of acculturative stresses faced by the Indo-American diaspora, as articulated in The Mistress of Spices (1997) and Queen of Dreams (2004) by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni. The two novels are widely read for their complex and in depth portrayal of diaspora identities and for their exploration of stress causing factors in the diaspora. J.W. Berry's acculturative stress theory, and his bi-dimensional quadric model of acculturation have been used, to show how characters in the two novels deal with acculturative stresses, and what causes these stresses. Confused identities, generation gaps in families, adjustment issues at work, and racism are the stresses that are specifically dealt with in these two novels. The study concludes that there is a unique opportunity to understand, through its literature, the culture of the Indian diaspora and thus clarify dominant host society's misconceptions that result in racism and other discriminatory behaviour. A wide readership within the host society provides a perfect platform to create awareness of the need to develop multiculturalism as a policy to help host societies and diasporas integrate. There is a need for developed host societies to follow policies of participative social inclusiveness such as celebration of festivals and tolerance and acceptance of cultural difference. That is the only way to ensure welladapted and happy global societies in the contemporary world.","PeriodicalId":308947,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Research: THE BEDE ATHENÆUM","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127592769","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To assess knowledge, attitude and practice of Himachali patients towards fixed orthodontic treatment and to find the difference of perception between female and male patients. A structured questionnaire comprising of fifteen questions in three sections was used among 100 orthodontic patients attending the O.P.D. of the department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics at H.P. Govt. Dental College and Hospital. The knowledge, attitude and practice were assessed on the Likert scale. The data were rescored based on positive, neutral or negative perceptions and depicted for a level. The difference in gender wise perception was tested using Mann-Whitney U test: 94% of orthodontic patients possess good knowledge about ongoing orthodontic treatment; however about 79% of the patients are unaware about retainers. Half of the patients think that people wearing braces do not look good and experience long waiting time, One third of the patients feel time spent for the procedure is inadequate and 62% believe orthodontic treatment is expensive; still 78% are happy about treatment outcome. 80% of the patients brush and rinse more carefully, however 40% patients are careless about braces and 23% forget appointment dates. Orthodontic patients in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, possess good knowledge about orthodontic treatment; however lack adequate attitude and practice towards the treatment. The orthodontists should inform patients about importance of retainers in the success of orthodontic treatment. They should also see to the concern of the patients about waiting time, procedure duration and cost of the treatment.","PeriodicalId":308947,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Research: THE BEDE ATHENÆUM","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128095785","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Individual differences play an important role not only for students ’achievement at school, but also in their experience of test anxiety. While efficacy of CBT has been established in reduction of test anxiety and increasing academic performance, the present study was an attempt to forward the field of anxiety treatment in India by the use of Hypnotherapy in this field. In this study comparative efficacy of Hypnotherapy with both CBT and a no treatment control group was established on a sample comprising of 72 students(equal number of half boys and half girls in each sample), selected on the basis of pre-test measure TAI(Spielberger, 1980). Their previous year's academic scores and I.Q. scores (pre-test measure) were used to identify underachievers. In this study while both the active therapies were significantly efficacious in reducing test anxiety, only Hypnotherapy was found significantly efficacious in improving academic achievement as compared to the CBT and a notreatment control group. However CBT showed better results than Hypnotherapy in the reduction of Test anxiety. No significant gender differences emerged.","PeriodicalId":308947,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Research: THE BEDE ATHENÆUM","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127247146","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nutrition indicators in India have stagnated and per capita calorie consumption has actually declined, suggesting that the problem of hunger may have got worse rather than better. It is home to about 25 per cent of the world's hungry poor (FAO, 2009). Forty eight per cent of children under the age of five years are malnourished in India, which is over a third of the world's 150 million malnourished under-fives. India is home to 42 per cent of the world's underweight children and 31 per cent of its stunted children (UNICEF, 2009b). It is estimated that 3 per cent of GDP is lost by physical impairments caused by malnutrition in Asian countries (Economist, 2010a). Nearly all studies examining health service utilization support that preventive visits improve overall health and reduce maternal and child mortality substantially. There is a strong relationship between women's empowerment and health. Only 27.1 per cent of women in India seem to be able to make a decision about their own health care, while 30.1 per cent of decisions are made by husbands. While 62.2 per cent of women decide on their own or jointly with their husbands about their health care, this seems to improve with education levels (NFHS-3, 2005–06). Only 60.3 per cent of urban women and 41.5 per cent of rural women are allowed to go alone to a health facility. However, the situation seems to improve with age, education and employment status. All this indicates that there is a need for economic and educational empowerment of women in order to improve their basic access to health care (Nayak & Mahanta, 2008). Using linear and multiple regressions the paper analyzes state level data to examine the influence of socio-economic factors on reduction of infant mortality rate of the states and union territories (UTs) of India. IMR of the states were inversely related to their female literacy rates (slope =-0.992, P < 0.0001). Multiple linear regression also revealed a significant inverse relationship between IMR and female literacy (slope =-0.8975, P < 0.0009).","PeriodicalId":308947,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Research: THE BEDE ATHENÆUM","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122758998","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to negligence regardless of age or gender one tends to avoid treatment at the right time, leading to an aggravation of the problem. 116 (66 male and 50 female within the age group 6–65 years residing in Shimla, India) of which 72% were patients undergoing treatment for physical ailments responded to the Dental Anxiety Scale (Corah's DAS-R, 1998). Major findings indicate that most patients undergoing treatment for chronic diseases and others (12%) who had undergone major to minor surgery were somewhat apprehensive for any kind of treatment for their gums and teeth. Dental anxiety strongly predicted oral health as was evident from the analysis on healthy people in spite of information of modern dental treatment devices. Subjects reported (12% children and 49% adults, mainly women) that they were ready to adopt oral care devices like flossing, brushing, and avoidance of unhealthy food or intermittent eating if that could ward off consulting a dentist. Such a study shows the importance of oral health care regardless of gender or age but the main issue lies in overcoming anxiety. Motivation for oral hygiene goes a long way in developing a healthy society.","PeriodicalId":308947,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Research: THE BEDE ATHENÆUM","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129951050","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
