Mattu","doi":"10.5958/0976-1748.2017.00018.2","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.5958/0976-1748.2017.00018.2","url":null,"abstract":"Looming dangers of food insecurity in the present millennium brought about by exploding population, coupled with a decrease in per capita availability of arable land has necessitated the attention of policy makers and planners in India to evolve an agenda ensuring sustainable livelihoods, natural resource use optimization and ecosystem protection through off-farm food and income generating activities and programs. In this scenario, beekeeping is destined to play a crucial role. In the present context of commercialization of agriculture and liberalization of Indian economy, beekeeping covers the entire scope of honeybee resources, bee products, beekeeping practices, pollination services and their interface with economic/business systems and environmental integrity. The potential for beekeeping in India is yet to be realized and according to a rough estimate this figure is merely 10 per cent. It is also well documented that the bulk of the honey and beeswax produced and consumed within the country comes from indigenous honeybee species namely Apis dorsata F., A. laboriosa S. and A. florea. F. A significant number of traditional communities depend upon these wild bee species for their livelihood seasonally. Also, these indigenous honeybee species play a very important role in preserving the biodiversity of local flora and fauna. There is a significant untapped diversity of scientific and practical knowledge available within the country. Several aspects have been studied in much details, but this knowledge has not been widely disseminated. In general, a little is known about the overall status of research, training and extension systems, primarily because of a lack of coordination amongst various implementing agencies and lack of databases. Pollination and its practical application are still knowledge for insiders and a broad level outreach of this aspect is lacking. There is thus an obvious need for reorienting policies and programs in the country for revitalizing the beekeeping industry thereby resulting in a paradigm shift towards more productive and sustainable apiculture. Sharma","doi":"10.5958/0976-1748.2015.00005.3","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.5958/0976-1748.2015.00005.3","url":null,"abstract":"The development of an organization depends upon the quantity and quality of work generated by its employees which is immensely influenced by the workplace environment and organizational factors. This paper examines how these factors positively influence workers ’health, well-being, and the relationship between healthy workplaces and productivity. Several studies suggests that to be effective in their jobs, employees should not compromise with their health, rather organizations should make continuous efforts to promote it. An organization in order to be effective should increase employee participation, opportunities to learn, supportive supervision at all levels, and a culture that gives priority to work-life balance. There is also evidence of causal links between organizations ’ ’productivity and traits like length of working hours, working conditions, employee health, staff turnover, job satisfaction etc. Many studies suggest that healthy workers and healthy working conditions are important preconditions for enterprises to work smoothly and productively. Although significant knowledge gaps remain in the process, but employers, employees and policy makers should together make efforts to create healthy organizations. Interventions based on extensive participation of the employees should be integrated with human resource management policies and programs. These interventions should be multifaceted in nature, intricately related to each other and simultaneously taking place at different levels of an organization. There has been less debate and discussion in academia about the impact of Partition on the Ladakh region. Many discourses consider Ladakh as a ‘mystic ’and ‘isolated ’place which had not been much influenced by the Partition of India. However, this has not been the case. The paper tries to locate the impact of Partition on the Ladakh province that has resulted in the fragmentation of Ladakhi society on communal basis leading to the (false) consciousness among the people, belonging to the two communities, i.e., Buddhists and Muslims. Ladakhi society before the Partition of India was a testimony to a heterogeneous milieu where the different communities, especially the majority of Buddhists and Muslims, lived in peace and harmony. This paper demonstrates the acuteness of antagonisms between the two communities that emerged specifically after the Partition of India and its causal tendencies on the contemporary Ladakhi society and its polarization due to political and social pressures.
