This is a natural thing because poetry is always conveyed in indirect language. Nevertheless, poetry research should understand more than just the meaning of poetry; more critical is how to manage understanding, imagination, and the role of the plurality of texts in uncovering its significance. This research is in line with that. Namely, it aims to examine the significance and appreciation of the lyrical text of a children's song entitled Nanatsu no Ko by Noguchi Ujo. This study uses the text semiology approach or textual narrative analysis proposed by Roland Barthes. The data analysed is the Lexia, the units of reading that comprise the entire text. The lexias have been determined and then analysed using five narrative codes: hermeneutic, proaretic, semic, symbolic, and references codes. This study also uses significance analysis (denotation and connotation) to understand the semic code and connotation of the text. The results of this study found that the significance of the text is a message of criticism about the author's disappointment with Japan's modernisation policy which abandoned the original identity of the Japanese nation. This significance is obtained through the analysis of narrative codes which show the role of plural texts, even though they are conveyed in the form of children's song lyrics, with simple and easy-to-understand diction and arrangement.","PeriodicalId":30867,"journal":{"name":"Izumi","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42900211","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Because of these conditions, the research was conducted with the aim of knowing how women struggle in achieving their existence. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. This research data uses dialogues and pictures taken from the manga Arte as data sources. The data retrieval method used is a reading and note-taking technique. Data analysis techniques are presented descriptively. This study uses Simone de Beauvoir's existentialist feminism theory. The results of the study show that women because of their otherness often get injustice in gender relations. In order for women to gain their own existence, women must fight back by carrying out four strategies of self-transcendence according to Beauvoir, namely working, becoming an intellectual figure, working to achieve social transformation, and rejecting the other. Through research from Arte's manga, it can be concluded that a woman who wants to achieve her existence is not an easy thing to achieve. Women who want to get out of the shackles of patriarchy do not always get a positive response, and it takes more effort and hard work to achieve that existence.","PeriodicalId":30867,"journal":{"name":"Izumi","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46264592","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This uniqueness makes dajare interesting to analyze further in terms of its grammatical meaning of punning phrase dajare. The source of the data used in this study is a YouTube channel about Japanese prefectures. Dajare about prefectures would be very helpful in memorizing the names of Japanese prefectures. Based on that, this study aims to describe the meaning of punning phrase dajare on the Shakishakinashi-zu YouTube channel. Researchers use the theory of grammatical meaning by Sutedi. As a guideline, a qualitative descriptive method was used to analyze the data in this study. In this study, 42 of the 47 total data had grammatical meaning. The punny phrase dajare about Japanese prefectures was found to use the most grammatical meanings of the types of formation of language units found in 19 data, followed by 16 affixation data, 4 compounding data, and 2 reduplication data.  ","PeriodicalId":30867,"journal":{"name":"Izumi","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46333923","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There is debate among the Japanese themselves regarding the meaning of this word, some people do not interpret it negatively, some others say that the word should be avoided because it has a discriminatory meaning. This was then explored further in order to get an initial picture of the research. This study aims to describe how the term gaijin relates to the mindset of Japanese society. To achieve this goal, this research will reveal how the Japanese interpret the term gaijin. It also reveals the early history of the use of the term, and the relationship between the use of the term gaijin and the mindset of Japanese society. The theoretical assumption used in this study is the opinion of Sapir and Whorf which states that every society in a certain culture, with their own language codes, will represent the world in their own way. Research data were obtained from the internet and in- depth interviews with Japanese people. The results of the analysis show that the use of the term gaijin that they practice when referring to foreigners is not a conscious characterization, but is more appropriate to be understood as a linguistic representation that shows their own cultural ideology. The use of the term gaijin is not a representation of their awareness to directly discriminate against foreigners, but rather how the Japanese show their identity in viewing people outside of themselves and their group.","PeriodicalId":30867,"journal":{"name":"Izumi","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41709613","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a period characterized by feudal society under the leadership of the Tokugawa clan, the Edo period (1603-1868) is known as the golden age of the development of traditional Japanese culture. Through a study of the play Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami (1746) which is one of the masterpieces of the Edo period, this study reveals the representation of masculinity that shows a hierarchical social construction between men and women. The method used in this study is a qualitative analysis through a gender approach from Wharton (2005) and Lindsey (2016), as well as a feminist criticism approach from Tyson (2015). The construction of masculinity in this play highlights the depiction of men as knights, which are associated with courage, loyalty, integrity, toughness and self-respect. In addition, the concept of masculinity is depicted as strongly tied to the determination of hierarchical and patriarchal social structures, as well as being a reflection of the gender ideology of the Edo period which puts the superiority of men as the central figure in socio-cultural life. The depiction of male qualities and characters that outperform female characters in this text shows the text’s strategy in strengthening the patriarchal paradigm, and clearly shows the function of this text as a locus for strengthening the implementation of patriarchy in the Edo period.","PeriodicalId":30867,"journal":{"name":"Izumi","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49614723","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This store of knowledge, when juxtaposed with the concept introduced by Wolfgang Iser in his book The Act of Reading: A Theory of Aesthetic Response (1987), can be called a Repertoire. Shortly, repertoire can be understood as the basis for creating a work, as the background to make the foreground the author aims at through his work. This process also applies to Akutagawa Ryuunosuke's short story entitled Rashomon as the foreground of Konjakumonogatari, the 29th volume of the 18th story. This research aims to describe how the social, historical, and cultural writings by Akutagawa Ryunosuke in the Rashomon and compared with Konjakumonogatari, using the Aesthetic Repertoire theory proposed by Wolfgang Iser. The process through which, among others, grouping the data to be analyzed is related to social, historical, and cultural norms of Japanese society. Next, compare the data to see the relationship between Rashomon and Konjakumonogatari. The results showed (1) There are similarities between social, historical, and cultural similarities between literature and reality, (2) Social norms indicate the life of the Japanese lower class in the Heian period called Genin, (3) Historical norms show the dark conditions that Japanese people went through in the Heian era, because of the many problems that occurred at that time, and (4) Cultural Norms show the efforts made by Japanese people in the Heian period to survive despite hurting others.","PeriodicalId":30867,"journal":{"name":"Izumi","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44518030","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
