It contained articles by Polish authors such as Konstanty Jelenski, Adam Michnik, Zdzislaw Najder, Jan Jozef Lipski, Jerzy Stempowski, Czeslaw Milosz, Gustaw Herling-Grudzinski and Stanislaw Swianiewicz. This list of renowned names emphasized the wish to familiarize the German reader with the greatest writers closely or loosely connected with the Literary Institute. The issue contained texts not only on the Polish-German relations, but was also a genuine attempt at promoting Kultura in German circles. An article by Swaniewicz was dedicated to the life of Wladyslaw Studnicki – the most important representative of the pro-German faction during War World I and the Second Polish Republic. The article has never been published in the Polish language. Courtesy of the Literary Institute in Masoins-Laffitte, Folia Historica Cracoviensa presents the original Polish work which was later translated into German. It is a very special text. Not only does Swaniewicz perfectly outline the key tenets of Studnicki’s doctrine and detail the social backdrop of Studnicki’s opinions, but he also revisits a number of personal memories of this figure. Thanks to Swaniewicz, in addition to studying the concept of the leading Polish ‘Germanophile’, we may also sense it through the author’s insightful and, at times, surprising interpretation.","PeriodicalId":30842,"journal":{"name":"Folia Historica Cracoviensia","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43486823","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In contrast to the parliamentary dispute in 1925 over the final ratification of the concordat, which was widely presented in the contemporary literature, the first debate in the Legislative Sejm was only a prelude and focused on establishing the sole principle of the concordat in the text of future constitution. According to it, this first debate determined only the legal way in which detailed relations between the Catholic Church and the state should be established in the future. The subject of the article was presented in chronological order, which corresponds with the sequence of constitutional efforts in the parliament. The article is based mainly on the historical sources in the form of stenographic records and documents of the Legislative Sejm (1919–1922). Its analysis makes it possible to recreate the first parliamentary debate over the principle of concordat in future constitution.","PeriodicalId":30842,"journal":{"name":"Folia Historica Cracoviensia","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47905208","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

W.Sekowski. Fr. J.Matulewicz decided to renew the Congregation, however it was impossible to do this manifestly, because of the repression from the side of the tsarist power. Thus, there was a necessity of the radical reform of the Congregation. The author of this paper, basing on the published documents and descriptions, presents the course of changes and attempts to answer a question why these changes happened without conflicts. The first reason for a lack of conflict is a small group of people involved in the reform, then – no bigger problem with proper understanding of the necessity of these changes by all interested. The next reason is cooperation full of respect and agreement between the people involved in the reform. Finally, it is important to mention presence and involvement of the overriding power – Holy See – in the reform. Furthermore, the author presents “the other side of the coin”: working of so called “stanislawici”, or priests, who believed that there was not any reform and exactly they are proper Marian fathers. They and also some later authors are the example of the delayed resistance towards already finished reform of the Congregation. This conflict was resolved by the competent authority of the Church.","PeriodicalId":30842,"journal":{"name":"Folia Historica Cracoviensia","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49051919","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

He was a prominent figure in the history of the African Church, especially in Zambia. He lived to the age of 96, having spent more than 60 years working for the Jesuit missions in Northern Rhodesia, later Zambia. This paper will discuss the various stages of the cardinal’s life: his origins, childhood, early upbringing at home under the supervision of his parents. Then we will look at his education in the renowned schools of the Second Republic, his joining the Society of Jesus and his desire to become a Jesuit educator of youth; next, World War II, his arrest and five-year ordeal as a prisoner in German concentration camps; and after that, his trip to Africa where his work with the local people was apparently extremely difficult, but fruitful. We will then examine the gradual development of the mission and the formation of the church administration that took place in Zambia. All these efforts resulted in Kozlowiecki’s appointment as apostolic administrator and apostolic vicar. Later, the Holy See created a new metropolitan see in Lusaka and Adam Kozlowiecki was appointed the first metropolitan archbishop of that city. We will review his participation in the Second Vatican Council, his becoming the first president of the Episcopal Conference of Zambia, his activity as a member of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and as director of the Pontifical Mission Societies in Zambia. In 1998, he was the first Polish Jesuit to receive a cardinal's hat. In this paper we will focus on Cardinal Adam Kozlowiecki’s life, mostly on the unexpected turn of events which led him to Africa. The author will investigate and try to determine which of them were most significant in the life of the Cardinal and how they affected the growth of the Zambian Church and the missions run by the Jesuits in that part of Africa.","PeriodicalId":30842,"journal":{"name":"Folia Historica Cracoviensia","volume":"23 1","pages":"11-35"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48003119","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Tzw. komplet żywiecki w skarbcu katedry na Wawelu w świetle badań źródłowych i ikonograficznych","authors":"Szymon Tracz","doi":"10.15633/FHC.2215","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.15633/FHC.2215","url":null,"abstract":"An exceptional place among liturgical vestments in the Treasury of the Wawel Cathedral occupies an ensemble consisting of a chasuble and two dalmatics, referred to as the ‘Żywiec ensemble' (Treasury of the Wawel Cathedral, chasuble — inv. no. KKK tk/334, a dalmatic depicting the Holy Communion — KKK tk/334A, a dalmatic depicting the Confession — KKK 334B). The vestments were sewn from Italian brocade around 1525 in Flan- ders and ornately decorated with figurative embroidery according to a design attributed to Lucas van Leyden (d. 1533). Since 1598 archival sources explicitly link the Żywiec ensemble to the parish church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Żywiec (currently the co-cathedral of the Bielsko-Biala/Żywiec diocese), which precludes the possibility of a later transfer or any purchase of the ensemble. The exceptional character of the vestments from Żywiec is emphasized by implementation of an ideological programme referring to the administra- tion of the holy sacraments. Only a few examples of European liturgical vestments decorated with images of the seven sacraments are extant — e.g. in St. Vincent Collegiate Church in Soignies (Zinnik) from late 15th centu- ry, on the band of a no longer extant cope of 1470 founded by count Giacomo de Savoia-Romont (Bern, Bernisches Historisches Museum, inv. 308), on embroideries of a Flanders cope from the end of the 15th century (Detroit, Institute of Arts), although we may encounter instances of such images in other fine arts, in particular in 15th century Dutch art: wall paintings, stained-glass paintings, book illustrations, sculptures (esp. font decora- tions) or many surviving sculpted or painted altarpieces and tapestries. The ensemble features a sacramental cycle split between three items, i.e. the chasuble and the two dalmatics. Due to the split, its entirety was vis- ible only when used during the liturgy by three clerics: a priest and two deacons. In terms of iconography, the images depicting the administration of sacraments derive from a wealth of iconographic tradition determining the manner in which the subsequent sacrament is shown, based on a pre- viously developed iconographic type, which was then expanded by the in- clusion of additional characters or by introducing unique details taken from everyday observation of liturgical and religious life. The departure point for constructing individual compositions is an easily recognisable ‘visible sign' constituting the next scene, behind which hides the content referring to ‘invisible grace' specific to each sacrament. The fact that such set of em- broidered images, rich in ideological content, was created must be linked to a vivid 15th century trend referred to as devotio moderna and apologetic content in the context of Martin Luther's reformation movement after 1517, which renounced the Churche's teachings of the seven sacraments.","PeriodicalId":30842,"journal":{"name":"Folia Historica Cracoviensia","volume":"23 1","pages":"427-463"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48711430","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
