The VGA has a gain control range of -28~23 dB with a 1 GHz 3-dB gain bandwidth using a cascode amplifier with negative capacitance. The PD shows an input power range of -30~20 dBm using an improved unbalanced source coupled pair, which incorporates an output differential amplifier and sink current steering. The AGC circuit produces constant output power for an input power range of -48 dBm~8 dBm over 0.1~1 GHz without an inductor. The overall current consumption is 7.7 mA under 1.5 V supply. The prototype is fabricated with a 0.18-mum standard CMOS technology.","PeriodicalId":308339,"journal":{"name":"2008 38th European Microwave Conference","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117221648","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The classical cavity model of a patch antenna is discussed with emphasis on the fringe fields and the compensation for these fringe fields in the form of effective patch dimensions. The effective patch dimensions are improved using a single full-wave simulation, drastically increasing accuracy at the cost of only a small increase in computation time. Using the input impedance of the patch antenna determined via a full-wave simulator, effective patch dimensions are adjusted for each single mode, matching the cavity model results to the full-wave results. It is found that adjustment of non-resonant modes cause a shift in amplitude of the input impedance and a adjustment of a resonant mode results in a shift in frequency. The error in predicted impedance decreases from 75% to 5%. An example is given where an exotic input impedance is required, to match the antenna directly to a nonlinear system. This shows that this method results in fast, efficient, reliable and optimal microstrip patch antenna design.","PeriodicalId":308339,"journal":{"name":"2008 38th European Microwave Conference","volume":"105 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124068249","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, the linearization performance and the efficiency enhancement of a Digital Predistorter (DPD) in a transmitter is evaluated with different PA classes. The digital predistorter is implemented in real-time on a Digital Signal Processor (DSP). The PA under test is a 2-stage 2-watt amplifier used in mobile terminals in Inmarsat Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN) systems. The gate bias of the PA is tunable for changing the biasing conditions. It is shown that by driving the PA into class B, we increase the memory effects and therefore reduce the effectiveness of memoryless predistortion. It was also shown that using a memoryless digital predistorter and a PA biased near class AB operation, an efficiency of about 41% is achievable while the BGAN system requirements are met.","PeriodicalId":308339,"journal":{"name":"2008 38th European Microwave Conference","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124680799","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The multipath effect takes place in radar scenarios close to the ground, when the direct ray waveform is interfered with forward reflections from surfaces near the radar or the target. The simplest and well known case is the ground multipath. Here the effect of buildings and walls perpendicular to the ground is also considered, and the total effect of both ground and walls multipath is accounted for. The models here use the image method, well known in mirror optics as well as in radar reflections, for computations. The use of this method is straight forward and well explained for the use of multipath phenomena, both vertical and horizontal, in simulations of radar scenarios. It is shown how to use multipath effects in the analysis of radar performance such as detection (received power) and monopulse angle measurement errors.","PeriodicalId":308339,"journal":{"name":"2008 38th European Microwave Conference","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129615141","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For omni hub antenna, it is shown that acceptable anti-collision performance can be engineered only when appropriate modulation at each tag is employed. When a beamforming hub antenna with moderate main lobe width and side lobe level (SLL) is instead used, the aggregate communication bandwidth is significantly reduced, or equivalently, the aggregate number of tags is amplified. Analytical results apply to general forms of backscatter communication, potentially useful in classic RFID systems.","PeriodicalId":308339,"journal":{"name":"2008 38th European Microwave Conference","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129829526","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The antenna consists of an elliptical radiating patch with a curved ground plane with embedded slots. When two narrow slots are introduced on a wideband elliptical monopole antenna (2.2-7 GHz), two bands are rejected without affecting the antenna properties at the rest of the operating frequencies. By properly choosing the length and location of the slots, a triple band antenna design is achieved. Impedance and radiation characteristics of the antenna are studied and results indicate that it is suitable for the 2.5-2.69 GHz, 3.4-3.69 GHz, and 5.25-5.85 GHz WiMAX applications and also the 2.4-2.484 GHz, 5.15-5.35 GHz, and 5.725-5.825 GHz WLAN applications.
