The analysis takes into account the conventional division of the sciences into theoretical (fundamental) and practical (applied). The main examples selected are physics from the natural sciences and psychology from the social and humanitarian sciences. The article considers the connection between the conformity of the foundations of theory to scientific standards and its survival. It shows that the natural sciences developed by means of the supplantation of initial postulates and paradigms, while the principal external criterion vis-à-vis social-science theories is their survivability. This assertion is juxtaposed with the fact that in the natural sciences applied technologies that change the world are a direct result of fundamental-research results, whereas in the social and humanitarian sciences, this connection is much weaker.","PeriodicalId":308330,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Russian & East European Psychology","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115848354","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

If culture does in fact influence perception, can unequivocal evidence for such a phenomenon be assembled?” (Segall et al., 1966, p. 3). The word “culture” can have different meanings: here, belonging to a particular culture means not only participating in a particular society’s economic and other activities, in its social institutions, and having mastery of its sign systems, but also living in the corresponding natural environment, experiencing the particular diseases common in that society, and so forth. In short, it means any factors influencing, or capable of influencing, apperception or “long-term attitudes” — the activity of the perceiver. Beside the works of A.N. Most of the differences described correspond to the differences between every day and scientific concepts identified by L.S. Vygotsky. The existing data are insufficient to determine whether all the qualitative differences listed by Vygotsky exist between units of verbal thinking in those who did and did not attend school. In some cases, the thinking of people who did not attend school exhibits features that, according to Vygotsky, should emerge only in school with the assimilation of scientific knowledge (language objectivation and the “super-empirical” connections between concepts).","PeriodicalId":308330,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Russian & East European Psychology","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130779281","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In many cases, both the former and the later differ equally from the thinking of people who have had a classroom education. These are among the facts that relate to the old problem of the “repetition of phylogenesis in ontogenesis.” While both psychology and ethnology still often point to such parallels, their cause and content have not been explicitly examined for a long time. The lack of research into the relationship between these two forms of mental development make it difficult to effectively apply the experience of child psychology, as an incomparably better developed field of genetic psychology, in investigating the","PeriodicalId":308330,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Russian & East European Psychology","volume":"262 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116886033","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is concluded that this latter area of research has uncovered more essential differences in cognitive processes. There is discussion of the linguistic aspect of activity-related differences in thinking, in particular the possibility of using Hymes’ idea of functional linguistic relativity in cross-cultural research. The article concludes with a discussion of possible social-psychological reasons why the linguistic-relativity phenomenon is more popular than activity-related relativity.","PeriodicalId":308330,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Russian & East European Psychology","volume":"108 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122694710","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
