Recent developments in pattern recognition and data analytics has motivated researchers to develop detection algorithms based on Deep Learning (DL). Inherently, an HIF generates an arbitrary and non-linear signal. The varying nature of the fault is an ideal match for a DL sequential algorithm as the basis for a pattern classification technique. Here we present two hybrid DL models to classify the progression of an HIF observed in a 400V network. The hybrid models were developed with a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and two variants of the Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) algorithm. The models have been trained on real-world Giant Magneto-Resistive (GMR) Sensor data collected via a purpose-built 400-Volt test facility. The preliminary testing of models demonstrated 99.48% accuracy in classifying different states of the HIF. The robustness of the model on a large and more varied data-set is the subject of ongoing work.","PeriodicalId":308212,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Kansas Power and Energy Conference (KPEC)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134372524","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Partial discharge (PD) identification is essential for the assessment of insulations particularly for medium and high power units operating at higher voltage levels. This paper proposes a finite element based model that illustrates the PD behavior in the electric machine stator winding. It also computes the PD features from the defects similar to the characteristics obtained by commercial detection systems. The proposed finite element analysis based computational model utilizes multiphysics which includes electrodynamics and thermal boundary conditions. This model describes complete variation in properties of defects and insulation of the stator winding under various operating stresses. The simulated PD features that include charge magnitude and PD occurrence are comparable with commercially available solutions. This model illustrates the level of deterioration in the winding insulation, whose characterization is used for defects classification.","PeriodicalId":308212,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Kansas Power and Energy Conference (KPEC)","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113959956","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

CMEs, such as solar flares, alter the magnetic and electric field of the earth. These changes induce DC voltage sources superimposed on transmission lines. The voltages result in the introduction of quasi-DC geomagnetically induced currents (GICs) to the AC synchronous power grid. These currents can cause half cycle saturation of transformers, harmonics, reactive power losses, and in extreme situations, widespread power outages. In this work, a planning-based GMD mitigation strategy is developed for large power systems. GIC blocking devices and system topology are leveraged in the design of strategies and systems to maintain preferable system operations despite a GMD. Simulation cases based on GIC blocking device installation and islanding plans will be used to create a strategy to minimize the effects of GMDs on the power grid.","PeriodicalId":308212,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Kansas Power and Energy Conference (KPEC)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126207215","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hence, modern protection schemes should be able to adapt to these variations and modify the protective device's settings to ensure effective protection coordination. Although prior works have addressed this issue using extensive communication-based methods (centralized or peer-to-peer), the actual implementation of these methods is economically less viable shortly considering the present infrastructure. However, with the advent of modern digital relays, protection schemes can be made adaptive yet keeping them decentralized and hence, easily implementable and deployable. The work proposed in this paper aspires to achieve this goal by utilizing the commonly used protective devices such as directional overcurrent relays in the power distribution systems by storing versatile setting groups enabling better observability of the relays towards fault identification and isolation in the absence of extensive communication links.","PeriodicalId":308212,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Kansas Power and Energy Conference (KPEC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129049342","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The results can be provided to utility operators in near real-time, enabling them to assess the status of the distribution transformer and take actions to avoid or mitigate costly transformer failures and service outages. After thorough review of potential non-invasive monitoring techniques, top oil temperature, vibration, transformer loading, and power factor were chosen as monitored parameters, and the overall health index is determined using fuzzy logic. Future load growth forecasting and existing transmission and distribution infrastructure capabilities must be realized when designing a modern high voltage substation. Here, we present the design and construction of a substation in a city center area. The economic aspects and risk factors of different bus configurations to accommodate the existing transmission and distribution facilities for the substation design were considered. The substation system is comprised of 138 kV transmission and 13.2 kV distribution networks. Modeling and design data were compared with the after-construction data obtained in a peak demand period. Realworld data demonstrated that planning is crucial to design and construct a substation. The breaker-and-a-half configuration for the transmission network and ring configuration topology for the distribution network provided maximum redundancy for the substation design. This configuration ensures proper coordination between the transmission and distribution systems for optimal power flow frameworks.","PeriodicalId":308212,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Kansas Power and Energy Conference (KPEC)","volume":"193 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125858311","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although DRTS are capable of simulating large models in real-time, it is challenging to visualize the results of large models without overdrawing or confounding the viewer. This paper provides an open-source framework for users to visualize their DRTS-based hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) experimental results in real-time. This proposed framework can be used by experimental test beds that can push data through an internet protocol based network. The proposed framework includes three main components. First, it includes the DRTS that generates and pushes the data to a relay. Second, it includes an application that serves multiple purposes, from data storage, testing, and translation of the data to a publisher/subscriber protocol. Finally, it includes libraries and applications that can be used to visualize the data by subscribing to the relay. This framework is available in open source, and it is tested using the HIL platform developed for testing advanced distribution management systems.","PeriodicalId":308212,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Kansas Power and Energy Conference (KPEC)","volume":"35 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132537575","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
