The proposed converter can provide a very high step-up voltage gain by utilizing dual coupled inductors and voltage multiplier cells. The secondary windings of the coupled inductors are employed to provide the interleaved energy storage in the output side. The voltage and current stress across the power semiconductor devices are reduced. Then the input current ripple is decreased due to the interleaved dc-dc converter in the primary side. In addition, this topology can be operated without an extreme duty cycle or a high turns ratio, and the ON-state resistance ripple is mitigated. The leakage energy is recycled, and the reverse recovery problem of the diodes is alleviated. Furthermore, the performance comparison between the proposed converter and other topologies are explored. The operation principle, mathematical derivations, simulation verifications, and experimental results are introduced. An input of 32-V to an output of 900-V is tested and simulated by using PLECS. Finally, a 450 W hardware prototype is tested to verify the design and the theory.","PeriodicalId":308212,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Kansas Power and Energy Conference (KPEC)","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133084494","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A robust and effective magnetic design help to reduce the parasitic values such as leakage inductance and consequently increase the efficiency and improve the performance of the converters. In this paper, two different HF transformers with different winding arrangements are designed and analyzed. Coaxial windings are used for the transformers in order for obtaining a better magnetic coupling and lower leakage inductance. The results are compared to the regular windings and this comparison showed the effectiveness of the coaxial windings. The design procedure and results are conducted for a power rating of 2kW and a voltage level of 400V/400V at the frequency of 5 kHz. The design method and the analysis procedure used in this paper can later be used for designing optimal isolated DC-DC converters or integrating parasitic parameters in resonant tank circuits for achieving zero voltage switching (ZVS) and zero current switching (ZCS). Especially for converters including silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN) switches. For analyzing the results and magnetic fields, finite element method (FEM) is used as a numerical strategy.","PeriodicalId":308212,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Kansas Power and Energy Conference (KPEC)","volume":"315 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127071877","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

High voltage grid faults that result in unbalanced operating conditions in SSTs can lead to dire consequences in regards to safety and reliability in comparison to traditional transformers. The proposed SST overcomes occurrence of faults by balancing the output line-to-line voltages using a fault tolerant technique. This paper proposes a new SST topology in conjunction with a fault-tolerant operation strategy that can fully restore operation of the proposed SST in case of one of the grid fault scenarios. However, the non-minimum-phase phenomena in the dynamic models of this system developed through the space-vector approach imposes a significant limitation on the stability margin of the VSC-HVDC converters. This restriction is more pronounced in valtage fault conditions and frequency oscillations. In this paper, a new PID design based on power-synchronization law along with a new approach to power-frequency swing equation has been designed. This new control method has the features of a virtual synchronous machine and is equipped with a highpass filter that robustifies the control operation during severe voltage and frequency instabilities in weak-grid conditions. A thorough analytical explanation of the proposed method along with performance evaluations in Hardware-in-the-loop environment demonstrate the efficacy of the operation and its simple implementation.","PeriodicalId":308212,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Kansas Power and Energy Conference (KPEC)","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127362713","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed topologies use the switched-inductor structure to extend the inverter voltage gain. The first proposed inverter can be named the active switched-inductor quasi ZSI (ASL-qZSI). The second topology is the active switched-capacitor/inductor quasi ZSI (ASCL-qZSI). These inverters have the advantage of increased voltage gain per smaller duty cycle and both of them have continuous source current. Compared with conventional enhanced boost qZSI with two switched impedance network (EB-qZSI) the proposed inverters provide high boost ability by one extra switch with less number of components (two capacitors and one inductor are reduced in proposed ASL-qZSI, one capacitor, one diode and one inductor are reduced in proposed ASCL-qZSI). Compared with conventional modified switched-capacitor Z-source inverter the proposed ASCL-qZSI has high boost factor with fewer components in Z-source network (with one extra switch). The experimental results of the proposed inverters with 48 Vdc input voltage are presented to verify the merits of the proposed inverters.","PeriodicalId":308212,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Kansas Power and Energy Conference (KPEC)","volume":"448 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125773729","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the bi-directional flow of power, Directional Overcurrent Relays (DOCRs) are being widely used in distribution systems. The pickup settings and time dial settings of these DOCRs needs to be modified with changing topologies and added DERs, to ensure proper selectivity and sensitivity towards fault identification and isolation. However, the setting groups that can be stored in DOCRs to accommodate these numerous topologies are limited. The work in this paper discusses the implementation of K-Medoids clustering technique to cluster the numerous grid-connected and islanded topologies of a distribution system based upon the various pickup currents and operating time indices. The testing results generated on a modified IEEE 13 node test feeder system demonstrate the effectiveness of the methodology over prior works.","PeriodicalId":308212,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Kansas Power and Energy Conference (KPEC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129866319","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is motivated by increasing interests in using D-FACTS devices to address system operational and cyber-security concerns. First, D-FACTS devices can be incorporated in real-time operations for economic benefits such as managing power congestions and reducing system losses. Second, D-FACTS devices can be utilized by moving target defense (MTD), an emerging concept against cyber-attacks, to prevent attackers from knowing true system configurations. Therefore, system operators can use the proposed ACOPF model to achieve economic benefits and provide the setpoints of D-FACTS devices for MTD at the same time. In addition, we rigorously derive the gradient and Hessian matrices of the objective function and constraints, which are further used to build an interior-point solver of the proposed ACOPF. Numerical results on the IEEE 118-bus transmission system show the validity of the proposed ACOPF model as well as the efficacy of the interior-point solver in minimizing system losses and generation costs.","PeriodicalId":308212,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Kansas Power and Energy Conference (KPEC)","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123482289","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A drawback of the trasnsformerless PV inverters is the leakage current that flows through the parasitic capacitance formed between the PV cells and panel metal frame connected to the earth. The leakage current increases the current harmonics injected into the utility grid, the radiated and conducted electromagnetic interference (EMI), and losses. In this paper, a two-stage three-phase Filter-Clamped (FC) transformerless PV system is employed that reduces the leakage current and output current THD compared to the conventional three-phase inverters. Unlike other transformerless PV inverters, the FC inverter does not require any additional component. The FC transformerless PV inverter is analyzed mathematically and its excellence is compared to the conventional three-phase inverter through simulation results.","PeriodicalId":308212,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Kansas Power and Energy Conference (KPEC)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132763896","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
