Random outages of component and the growing penetration of wind power make power system analysis complex. Under such conditions, applying probabilistic approaches, including probabilistic power flow (PPF), is recommended to analyze the grid, e.g., power system planning. In this paper, a PPF based on Monte-Carlo simulation (MCS) and data clustering is proposed. The proposed approach reduces the computational burden of MCS and maintains the correlation between input data (wind generation and system load). The proposed method is applied to a test and real bulk power systems at 400 and 132 kV levels, including wind farms. The actual power grid has a specific area that suffers from voltage-related problems in some of its buses. This paper studies the effect of installing a candidate 400 kV substation on the bus voltages of this grid through DIgSILENT® POWER FACTORY.","PeriodicalId":308212,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Kansas Power and Energy Conference (KPEC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131159651","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the proposed system, human muscle energy, abundantly available in rural and remote locations, has been converted into electrical energy to be stored in an alternative energy storage device, e.g. a supercapacitor. The usual bicycle with a minor modification is plugged to a charging platform. The charging platform has a power processing circuit and a Permanent Magnet Direct Current generator. The system has the ability to power up a 1 W white LED lamp for a duration of approximately 60 minutes, when the bicycle is pedaled for 4 minutes. The proposed system is not only eco-friendly, but also effectively caters to the challenges posed by seasonal variations and locational disadvantages and is targeted specifically for locations which are not having access to the power grid.","PeriodicalId":308212,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Kansas Power and Energy Conference (KPEC)","volume":"93 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121588462","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A simple cyber-physical attack on the power grid is to introduce delays in the delivery of these measurement and control messages to the control centers of the grid. This paper investigates the consequences of delay using the IEEE 30 bus standard benchmark. The Power System Simulation software PSCAD is used to model the power system. A case study to introduce delays and line cuts and measure the line voltage is presented. The defects are modeled by short dipoles, which were randomly placed inside the GIS. Gaussian Pulses were used as inputs to the short dipoles. Consequently, Electromagnetic (EM) waves start propagating inside the GIS enclosure. Five Ultra-High Frequency (UHF) sensors were used to acquire the propagating waves. A large number of utilized sensors is attributed to the limited number of simulation scenarios that were used. The captured signals were fed into a Gradient Boosting Machine (GBM) algorithm to localize the defects inside the GIS. The dataset fed into the GBM algorithm were power, voltage and cumulative energy received by each sensor. The biggest challenge associated with applying the GBM algorithm is the limited amount of obtained data. This paper provides a method of modeling PD defects inside medium and high voltage devices which can then be used for PD localization. The obtained results showed high accuracy with RMSE values of 31.46mm, 71.85mm, and 58.13mm for the X, Y, and Z axes, respectively.","PeriodicalId":308212,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Kansas Power and Energy Conference (KPEC)","volume":"135 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121055476","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Moreover, an early indication of voltage instability also facilitates the system operator in carrying out load shedding as the remedial action for mitigating voltage collapse. However, the absence of mechanical rotating mass in voltage source converters (VSC) restricts their contribution in regulating voltage fluctuations or sufficient fast inertial frequency response. In this paper, a virtual inertia based control methodology over the dc-link voltage is applied to accommodate a smooth transient frequency response and a feed forward term based on the oscillations of the active power is appended to cater for the unbalanced grid voltage condition. This combination presents a package which provides seamless inertial energy response and straight power supply in the impact of an unbalanced grid condition. This control methodology has been verified using the Hardware-in-the-loop (HiL) technique in Matlab/Simulink and Xilinx System Generation environment. These parameters include load growth, economic factors (ratio of inflation rate to interest rate), size of distributed generation (DG), and size of capacitor bank. Herein, to minimize the total cost of problem, the networked microgrids is optimally reconfigured, and the DGs and capacitor banks are optimally sized and installed in the best locations. The total cost of problem comprises several cost terms including investment costs for purchasing capacitor banks and DGs, maintenance costs of capacitors and DGs (proportional to their application period), network reconfiguration cost (switching cost), and network energy loss cost. To achieve the realistic results, the yearly load growth, daily variation of load throughout each year of the planning period, variation of load in each load level (low, medium, and high), and inflation and interest rates are considered in the planning problem. Moreover, the switches, DGs, and capacitors are switched in each load level of a day.","PeriodicalId":308212,"journal":{"name":"2020 IEEE Kansas Power and Energy Conference (KPEC)","volume":"5 4","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132364992","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, inverter control and feeder protection will need to be tuned to the operating modes of the microgrid. This paper offers an insight into the issues involved by taking a case study of a real-world feeder located in the southwestern US that was converted to a microgrid with three solar PV units connecting to the feeder. Different inverter control configurations and adaptive protection using different settings for different operating conditions are proposed for safe operation of this microgrid. As the harmonic emission of multilevel inverters are generally lower than their conventional two-level counterparts, not a bulky passive filter is required to eliminate the harmonic currents. However, the zero impedance of LCL filters at certain frequencies may expose the network to instability. In this paper, an embedded active damping technique based on virtual resistance method, within an internal model control scheme, has been implemented on a PV-flying capacitor multilevel inverter. An internal model of the LCL filter and the feeder line resistances are encapsulated in the controller and the difference between the control current output and the actual one passing through a compensator leads to the accurate control objective. Besides this interconnection, the protection of the whole system is necessary to retain it's stability. This research work carries out the detection of transmission line faults for a DG interconnected system of Goa (a state in India) power transmission network, using wavelet Multi Resolution Analysis. For the purpose of fault discrimination, a moving window technique is selected. The single level decomposition of three phase currents of all Buses are obtained with Bior 1.5 mother wavelet. The calculated fault indices are compared with the pre-calculated threshold value. This provides sufficient information about the situation of fault in a transmission line.
