The methodology of design-for-cybersecurity is now widely recognized, in which the effects of cybersecurity, or lack thereof, on system objectives must be determined. However, developers are often challenged by the difficulty of analyzing a system-under-design without complete specifics. In this paper, we describe a systems design approach, which incrementally models the cybersecurity architecture, components, and interfaces of an embedded system for analysis and demonstration. We have applied this approach to analyze the mission resiliency of an avionic computer being developed and demonstrate its operations in a scenario when the system is under attack.","PeriodicalId":308129,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE High Performance Extreme Computing Conference (HPEC)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121703270","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, few implementations have focused on cloud-based systems like Amazon's Web Services, which differ from HPC systems in several ways, most importantly in terms of network interconnect. This work looks at optimizations to reduce the communication overhead of an accelerated, distributed BFS on an HPC system and a smaller cloud-like system that contains GPUs. We demonstrate the effects of an efficient 2D partitioning scheme and allreduce implementation, as well as different CPU-based compression schemes for reducing the overall amount of data shared between nodes. Timing and Score-P profiling results demonstrate a dramatic reduction in row and column frontier queue data (up to 91%) and show how compression can improve performance for a bandwidth-limited cluster.","PeriodicalId":308129,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE High Performance Extreme Computing Conference (HPEC)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126312013","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A basic operation in calculating Jaccard distance is to count the number of ones in a binary vector - population count. This article focuses on finding the K-nearest neighbors in a high-dimensional Jaccard space. There are two main contributions. First, software methods for population count are improved and implemented in Advanced Vector Extensions. They are faster than the hardware instruction. Second, a new method for KNN is proposed. Jaccard distance is a metric. After the K-nearest neighbors of a vector are found, their K-nearest neighbors must be in a hypersphere with a radius determined by the triangle inequality. Sequential computation and parallelization by OpenMP and POSIX Threads are implemented. The new method is up to six to 11 times faster than the classic method.","PeriodicalId":308129,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE High Performance Extreme Computing Conference (HPEC)","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133046549","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Specialized database engines such as array and graph databases support partially overlapping sets of query processing operations. Among their common or similar semantics, different systems could have completely different performance profiles for the same query, making their relative usefulness vary from query to query. We hypothesize that a polystore system could exploit this context-dependent disparity of performance by making choices between executing a sub-query locally and migrating the inputs for remote executions. In this work, as part of the larger ISTC BigDAWG project, we examine the challenges of polystore query optimization through the lens of equivalent semantics among back-end databases.","PeriodicalId":308129,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE High Performance Extreme Computing Conference (HPEC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131527116","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The array data model of SciDB makes it ideally suited for storing and managing large amounts of imaging data. SciDB is designed to support advanced analytics in database, thus reducing the need for extracting data for analysis. It is designed to be massively parallel and can run on commodity hardware in a high performance computing (HPC) environment. In this paper, we present the performance of SciDB using simulated image data. The Dynamic Distributed Dimensional Data Model (D4M) software is used to implement the benchmark on a cluster running the MIT SuperCloud software stack. A peak performance of 2.2M database inserts per second was achieved on a single node of this system. We also show that SciDB and the D4M toolbox provide more efficient ways to access random sub-volumes of massive datasets compared to the traditional approaches of reading volumetric data from individual files. This work describes the D4M and SciDB tools we developed and presents the initial performance results. This performance was achieved by using parallel inserts, a in-database merging of arrays as well as supercomputing techniques, such as distributed arrays and single-program-multiple-data programming.","PeriodicalId":308129,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE High Performance Extreme Computing Conference (HPEC)","volume":"106 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134562724","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Parallel motion estimation algorithms only offer motion vectors to HEVC encoder, but CU splitting decision in HEVC still needs more information to speed up the encoder. Therefore, a mechanism using GPU to signify encoder which CU depth can be split instantly using motion data is designed. With experiments on Kepler GK110 GPU, the proposed parallel algorithm gains over 510 times faster than the full search motion estimation in the HEVC reference software, and the proposed fast CU splitting mechanism can further save 23% total execution time when compared to the general encoder with parallel motion estimation.","PeriodicalId":308129,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE High Performance Extreme Computing Conference (HPEC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130042554","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recent standardization efforts such as the GraphBLAS specify a set of key computational kernels that hardware and software developers can adhere to. Graphulo is a processing framework that enables GraphBLAS kernels in the Apache Accumulo database. In our previous work, we have demonstrated a core Graphulo operation called TableMult that performs large-scale multiplication operations of database tables. In this article, we present the results of scaling the Graphulo engine to larger problems and scalablity when a greater number of resources is used. Specifically, we present two experiments that demonstrate Graphulo scaling performance is linear with the number of available resources. The first experiment demonstrates cluster processing rates through Graphulo's TableMult operator on two large graphs, scaled between 217 and 219 vertices. The second experiment uses TableMult to extract a random set of rows from a large graph (219 nodes) to simulate a cued graph analytic. These benchmarking results are of relevance to Graphulo users who wish to apply Graphulo to their graph problems.","PeriodicalId":308129,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE High Performance Extreme Computing Conference (HPEC)","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127076870","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Traditionally, FPGAs have often been employed to meet these requirements. However, due to the productivity challenges, using FPGAs may not be viable in some cases. Alternatively, the typical approach of processing an image on a CPU device at a frame level increases the processing latency of the computer-vision system. In this paper, we explore the feasibility of processing an input image at a sub-frame level on a multi-core SoC device, the 66AK2H12 from TI. Using sub-frame processing, we optimize and evaluate the performance of four kernels commonly used in image-processing pipelines. Our results show, for all four kernels in our study, that real-time, low-latency image processing with high throughput for HD-resolution images can be achieved using the multiple DSP cores available in the 66AK2H12 device.","PeriodicalId":308129,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE High Performance Extreme Computing Conference (HPEC)","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132873212","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The high bandwidth provided by 3D memories does not translate to a proportional increase in performance for all applications. For an application such as 2D FFT with strided access patterns, the data layout of the memory has a significant impact on the total execution time of the implementation. In this paper, we present a data layout for 2D FFT on 3D memory integrated FPGA that is both on-chip memory efficient as well as throughput-optimal. Our data layout ensures that consecutive accesses to 3D memory are sufficiently interleaved among layers and vaults to absorb latency due to activation overheads for both sequential (Row FFT) and strided (Column FFT) accesses. The current state-of-the-art implementation on 3D memory requires O(√cN) on-chip memory to reduce the strided accesses and achieve maximum bandwidth for an N × N FFT problem size and c columns in a 3D memory bank row. Our proposed data layout optimizes the throughput of both the Row FFT and Column FFT phases of 2D FFT with O(N) on-chip memory for the same problem size and memory parameters without decreasing the memory bandwidth thereby achieving a √c× reduction in on-chip memory. On architectures with limited on-chip memory, our data layout achieves 2× to 4× improvement in execution time compared with the state-of-art 2D FFT implementation on 3D memory.","PeriodicalId":308129,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE High Performance Extreme Computing Conference (HPEC)","volume":"204 ","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113998567","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
