The optimization problem has been enriched in order to account for traffic energy consumption and network travel time, thus avoiding impractical or undesirable solutions. A traffic microscopic simulator has been used to assess the performance of the proposed technique in terms of energy consumption, travel time, idling time, and number of stops. The theoretical bandwidth proves to be well correlated with idling time and number of stops, while the variable speed limits control shows interesting advantages in terms of energy consumption without penalizing the travel time. An analysis of the Pareto optimum has been carried out to help the designer choose a trade-off in the multi-objective optimization.","PeriodicalId":308101,"journal":{"name":"2015 54th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control (CDC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123843730","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, their limited energy capacity limits their lifespan. In this paper, a power management strategy at network-level for a set of nodes is proposed. The control strategy makes use of a Hybrid Dynamical System approach, where solutions may continuously flow according to some differential equations and may discontinuously jump according to some rules. The goal of the proposed control strategy is to improve the scalability issues while the network lifespan is not decreased when compared to a Model Predictive Control (MPC) approach, leading to an improvement in the network power consumption. The strategy is evaluated in simulation on a realistic benchmark. Simulation results and their comparison to results obtained with an MPC strategy show the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.","PeriodicalId":308101,"journal":{"name":"2015 54th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control (CDC)","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121165092","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Optimization is done in real time, so as to take into account variable traffic demands. At each cycle of the traffic lights, the optimization concerns time instants where each traffic light starts and ends its green phase: this allows to describe both the duty-cycle and the phase shifts. First, we formulate a global optimization problem, which can be cast as a mixed-integer linear program. To overcome the complexity of this centralized approach, we also propose a decentralized suboptimal algorithm, whose simplicity allows online implementation. Simulations show the effectiveness of the proposed strategies.","PeriodicalId":308101,"journal":{"name":"2015 54th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control (CDC)","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122488570","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To address this problem, this paper provides a set of geometrical conditions that guarantee the existence of a change of coordinates which decomposes the studied nonlinear dynamical system into two dynamical subsystems, where the first one is of the well-known output injection form. This transformed form allows us to design a simple reduced-order (Luenberger-like) observer to estimate the observable state.","PeriodicalId":308101,"journal":{"name":"2015 54th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control (CDC)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123960946","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We first assume that we know a local observer, i.e. a dynamical system whose state converges to the plant state when it is initialized nearby the plant initial condition. We sample the set where the plant initial condition is assumed to lie with a finite number of points; noting that this set can be arbitrarily large. A local observer is initialized at each of these sampled points to form a bank of observers called multi-observer. A supervisor is then constructed to select one of these observers at any time instant. The selected state estimate is guaranteed to converge to the state of the plant, provided the number of samples is sufficiently large and a detectability property holds, which is expressed in terms of Lyapunov-based conditions. An explicit lower bound on the required number of observers is given when an estimate of the basin of convergence of the local observer is available. We explain how to apply the approach to nonlinear systems with globally Lipschitz and differentiable nonlinearities. Simulations results are presented for a Wilson-Cowan oscillator.","PeriodicalId":308101,"journal":{"name":"2015 54th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control (CDC)","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132709373","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite obvious advantages, network controllability is not always feasible as it may ask for a considerable portion of the nodes to be controlled. Moreover, there are cases where controllability of the entire network is not of interest, but rather we are interested in controllability properties of certain parts of the network. This motivates us to investigate the so-called “targeted controllability” of the network, where controllability is only required for a subset of nodes in the network. Noting that targeted controllability can be treated as an output controllability problem, we investigate the (strong) structural output controllability properties of the network from a topological viewpoint. In addition, we examine the structural properties of the reachable subspace of the network. To this end, we use the notion of zero forcing sets, which has been recently exploited in the context of structural controllability.","PeriodicalId":308101,"journal":{"name":"2015 54th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control (CDC)","volume":"123 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132935390","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
