Emotivity analysed in sociopragmatic terms should not only be linked to the so-called emotional charge of enunciation or the verbal externalization of affective states. According to our approach, it is more similar to a ritual attribute of interaction that accentuates conversational involvement, which opposes the strategies focused on non-interference and distancing. Our interest is aimed at exposing not only how this is a specialized way to designate the region next to the issuer, but how it is also possible to use it in other contexts. {"title":"The Definite and Indefinite Articles of Spanish (or Castilian) Language in Context","authors":"Sonia Montero Gálvez","doi":"10.4312/vh.26.1.99-127","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.4312/vh.26.1.99-127","url":null,"abstract":"The present paper addresses the contrast between the definite article (el/la/los/las) and the indefinite article (un/a/os/as) from a cognitive approach that not only poses a single meaning for each kind of article, but also highlights the pragmatic (or contextual) aspects that underlie that meaning and establish the use of one form or another. The article’s meaning is shaped by the way we conceptualize the reference: the definite article implies an inclusive reference characterized by the uniqueness of the referent, while the indefinite article implies an exclusive reference characterized by the lack of uniqueness. The lack of contributions of this type in the Hispanic field makes this exploration more important.
