{"title":"Economy or Ethnography?","authors":"Aida Brenko","doi":"10.32458/ei.27.17","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.32458/ei.27.17","url":null,"abstract":"The text depicts the role of Vladimir Tkalčić in the Ethnographic Museum in Zagreb from 1919 to 1934, a period characterised by the so-called diarchy between him and Salamon Berger. Various museological and expert concepts that they represented and implemented were a reflection of new ideas and inherited concepts in turbulent times after World War I and the establishment of a new state, the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. Tentatively, we can speak of a “scientific” approach and a “commercial” approach that juxtaposed, intertwined, and complemented each other. The data from the museum documentation show that S. Berger understood the activities of the Museum as a continuation of his previous trade and craft practices, while V. {"title":"Museum of Arts and Crafts as a Generator of New Institutions in the Time of Director Vladimir Tkalčić (1933-1952)","authors":"Jasmina Fučkan","doi":"10.32458/ei.27.14","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.32458/ei.27.14","url":null,"abstract":"Vladimir Tkalčić held the function of Director of the Museum of Arts and Crafts from the beginning of September 1933 to June 1952, which was the period of his vocational maturity – from age 50 until his retirement. The paper provides insight into Tkalčić’s vision of the development of the institution and into his achievements which allowed, already in his lifetime, that practice systems be derived from the Museum of Arts and Crafts and funds be formed as a baseline for the establishment of new institutions in Zagreb, such as the conservation and restoration workshop of the Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts, the Museum of Serbs in Croatia, and the Technical Museum. Interpretations of certain achievements that Tkalčić accomplished in conditions of economic and political instability, in a whirlwind of confusion combined with the violence of wartime, are inevitably imbued with controversy. Tkalčić’s photographic legacy was one the first sections made available to the public and, in addition, the first one that, from a legal point of view, in accordance with the Copyright and Related Rights Act, required and underwent the copyright regulation procedure. Next, successive stages of the development of museological thought are given, and persons who made contributions in Croatia are identified. Tkalčić’s role in the creation and presentation of the Museum’s “comprehensive” collection of carpets and kilims is determined in the context of museological practices and research in the field of carpet-making at the time. A comparative analysis will show what corresponded and what differed in the mentioned system in managing the museum inventory (or with museum documentation) from the foundation of the Museum of Arts and Crafts (1880) until 1933. Immediately after its founding, approximately 20,000 objects entered the museum’s holdings, therefore, one of the first tasks was their expert processing, inventorying and cataloguing. Thanks to Tkalčić, the foundations of museum’s professional and scientific activity were laid, with an effort to abide by the museological principles of the time. Komparacijom će se pokazati što je u navedenom sustavu/sistemu korespondiralo kao i što je bilo različito od načina vođenja muzejskog inventara (ili s muzejskom dokumentacijom) od vremena osnutka Muzeja za umjetnost i obrt (1880.) pa sve do 1933. godine.
