Large concentrations of CDs: 30–40 forms per km2 occur in areas where thick (more than 10 m) complex of glacigenic sediments (mainly glacial tills) or clay (limniglacial) deposits underlying loess cover. Areas with a low concentration of CDs (fewer than 10 forms per km2) correspond to areas where the loess cover lies on a bedrock (opokas) or on thin sandy-gravelly deposits. The distributions of CDs depends on the conditions of Pleistocene permafrost development and melting, linked with lithological properties of the sediments under loess cover.","PeriodicalId":30719,"journal":{"name":"Landform Analysis","volume":"29 1","pages":"9-18"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66210906","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The use of two dimensional electrical resistivity tomography (2D ERT) to non-invasive analyses of the hillslope microrelief allowed completing previous results of geomorphological and soil studies. The tomograms (inversion results) acquired across individual forms of treethrow pits and mounds can be interpreted according to regolith thickness and its wetness, but also smaller features such as relict and fresh tree root systems detected in the mounds. These features were compared to a general picture of geoelectrical resistivity measured in the main cross-section of the analyzed hillslope. The differences in slope cover characteristics observed on the tomograms confirm important role of the tree uprooting process in formation of some basic features of the regolith and soils, including their uneven redistribution across the hillslope.","PeriodicalId":30719,"journal":{"name":"Landform Analysis","volume":"29 1","pages":"41-47"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66211019","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sedimentary successions were profiled in the fieldwork. Moreover, the borehole data were studied. Laboratory studies included: grain size analyses, analyses of shape and morphology of quartz grain (morphoscopy), analyses of anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS), palynological, malacological and ostracodological studies, as well as geochronometric (C14) and geochemical (δ18O/δ16O) measurements. The studies were carried out in 2009–2013 and resulted in discovering of some sedimentary formations as well as arranging geological cross-sections and synthetic lithostratigraphic profile. The following sedimantary formations have been distinguished: Folwark, Kucow, Czyzow, Ławki, Rogowiec, Aleksandrow, Piaski and Widawka, arranged into two structural units: the lower one – deformed, and the upper one – undeformed.","PeriodicalId":30719,"journal":{"name":"Landform Analysis","volume":"29 1","pages":"63-71"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66211082","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For this purpose, the micromorphological analysis was carried out for a sample taken from the surface of a tree covered island. The analysis is laborious, but its great advantage is that it allows to determine the detailed characteristics of undisturbed sediments, supplying other lithological studies. Examined thin section showed fractionation lamination within medium and fine sands, interbedded with coarser grains with some organic admixtures. Detailed analysis allows to detect gradual and sudden changes of discharge energy.","PeriodicalId":30719,"journal":{"name":"Landform Analysis","volume":"29 1","pages":"3-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66210895","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main stages of the Baltic Sea evolution in the Holocene - Ancylus Lake, Mastogloia Sea, Littorina Sea, and Post-Littorina Sea - were identified in diatom assemblages. The transition stage between Ancylus Lake and Littorina Sea, called Mastogloia Sea, was not such a long period as in the Mecklenburg Bay but was essential in the evolution of the Baltic Sea. The most pronounced feature of this period was an increase in the number of halophilous species, which reflected the existence of the littoral environment at the onset of this stage. The appearance and development of halophilous species was stimulated by stepwise inflows of saline waters. The composition of diatom assemblages reflected natural eutrophication of the Baltic Sea during the Littorina Sea stage.","PeriodicalId":30719,"journal":{"name":"Landform Analysis","volume":"29 1","pages":"19-25"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66210958","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main stages of the Baltic Sea evolution – Baltic Ice Lake, Ancylus Lake, and Littorina Sea – were identified in both analysed cores. The most pronounced period was the transition between the Ancylus Lake and the Littorina Sea. The character of the initial stage of the Littorina Sea was clearly defined in the Mecklenburg Bay sediments and is marked by a stepwise increase in loss on ignition and contents of biogenic silica, calcium, magnesium, iron, and strontium. The record of the onset of the Littorina Sea in the Arkona Basin sediments is marked by an abrupt change of the geochemical parameters. The age of the initial Littorina Sea in the Mecklenburg Bay was estimated at about 8200 cal years BP and was probably older than the transgression within the Arkona Basin.","PeriodicalId":30719,"journal":{"name":"Landform Analysis","volume":"29 1","pages":"27-33"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66210969","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The samples were collected from the fill of an abandoned channel on the floodplain of the lower Dunajec (17 km from its mouth) and from the floodplain of the Dunajec in the backwater of the Czorsztyn Reservoir and analysed used the laser diffraction and sieve methods. A cumulative curve analysis of the samples located in the fields of dominant deposition from traction in the C/M diagram (Fields I, II, III, IX) showed that the dominant type of their transport prior to deposition was saltation and suspension (81%), while traction amounted to an average of 19%. In the fields of the C/M diagram corresponding to the deposition of graded suspension under the conditions of high (Field IV) and moderate turbulence (Field V), the dominant type of sediment transport before deposition was saltation, whose amounted to 78–86% (Field IV) and 50–76 % (Field V). In the fields of the C/M diagram indicating deposition from graded suspension transported in conditions of low turbulence (VI) and uniform suspension of varied grain size (VII), the dominant type of transport prior to deposition was suspension, amounting to 35–94%. Sediments located in the field of the C/M diagram corresponding to the finest uniform suspension and pelagic suspension (Field VIII) were in 91–95% transported in suspension prior to deposition.","PeriodicalId":30719,"journal":{"name":"Landform Analysis","volume":"29 1","pages":"35-40"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66210979","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Diatom-inferred environmental characteristics, e.g., water level, water salinity (conductivity), trophic status and pH, from the Holocene are presented. In the sediments from the early Boreal/early Atlantic period, an increase in the participation of brackish-freshwater species is observed, as well as increased numbers of Chaetoceros spores in the samples. The Atlantic sediments of Lake Łebsko mirror conditions typical of the Littorina Sea phase during the development of the Baltic Sea (from c. 7,500 BP to c. 5,000 BP). However, communities of that period dominated by fresh-brackish water species suggest the relatively low salinity of the waters. The presence of isolated frustules of Terpsinoe americana and other typically marine species, e.g., Mastogloia smithii, and the occurrence of silts with Cardium shell detritus point to the Littorina transgression and the functioning of a lagoon within the area of present-day Lake Łebsko. During Subboreal occurrence, a higher number of brackish-freshwater diatoms corresponds to an increase in the water level of the Baltic Sea (approximately 3,000 14C BP). Changes in diatom community structure imply a close relationship with the climate controlled eustatic rise of ocean level and the consequent Littorina transgression, as with other southern Baltic Sea localities.","PeriodicalId":30719,"journal":{"name":"Landform Analysis","volume":"29 1","pages":"81-90"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66211149","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
