The VPP consists of a wind park, hydro plant and reservoir as well as solar PVs and battery energy storage. The 50-kV subtransmission network was modeled in order to evaluate the ancillary services that could be provided by coordinating existing distributed energy resources in the network. Simulations were performed using measured hourly variations in production and consumption at all network nodes. The studied ancillary services include both reactive and active power control. Contribution from the VPP is evaluated for balancing, to enable a producer to meet spot markets bids and avoid purchases of balancing power minimize peak load in order to reduce subscribed power and tariff to the regional 130-kV network decrease network losses the contribution from reactive power control using the power converters to reduce the reactive power flow to the overlying network. Quantification of the economic gains from each operation case is provided.","PeriodicalId":307118,"journal":{"name":"IEEE PES ISGT Europe 2013","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126589395","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, recently developed SiC technology can improve energy conversion efficiency as well as power density. To investigate the benefits provided by SiC technology, experimentally calibrated SiC MOSFET models have been modeled in multilevel voltage sourced converters (VSCs) to analyze the generated harmonics, converter temperature rise, switching losses and filtering requirements. Models show that converters implemented in SiC MOSFETs operate at 25-75% less temperature compared with silicon IGBTs, potentially simplifying cooling. Also, SiC MOSFETs generate ~2% less THD for the same switching frequency and can reduce the switching loss by up to 82% compared to silicon devices.","PeriodicalId":307118,"journal":{"name":"IEEE PES ISGT Europe 2013","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122004569","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When PCS using frequency-feedback islanding detection system are installed to power system intensively, PCSs are afraid to deteriorate the frequency stability. This research focuses on small islanding system such as microgrid, including a synchronous generator and a PCS. In a microgrid which is operated in islanding mode, its frequency stability may be sensitive to islanding detection system compared with a large scale grid. From the simulations using different automatic voltage regulator (AVR) and governor of the synchronous generator, it is found that there is a possibility of continuous frequency fluctuation caused by the interaction between AVR and islanding detection system. In addition, maximum tolerable capacity of PCS in the system used in this research is presented.","PeriodicalId":307118,"journal":{"name":"IEEE PES ISGT Europe 2013","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126486614","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Load flow simulations show that PV generators affect the performance of classical LDC in a negative way. However, when a database exists where voltages measured by smart-meters are stored, Least-Squares support vector machines (LS-SVM) can be used to estimate the maximum and minimum voltage in the system, without needing a grid model, nor real-time communication. Control of the OLTC can then be executed to widen the gap between the system voltage and the acceptable limits, based on the maximum and minimum system voltage estimates.","PeriodicalId":307118,"journal":{"name":"IEEE PES ISGT Europe 2013","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115089720","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The situation is further complicated by the necessity for PSs to survive under the competition and uncertain conditions. Based on the detailed blackout analysis, the dangerous overload of transmission grid is held as a key element giving start to the development of many cascading processes. Therefore, paying major attention to the overload as to the primary event, it is possible to prevent a blackout by fixing the emergency epicentre and blocking the development of cascading events and power plant outages. For the purpose of dangerous overload elimination the short-term splitting of power system can be used, followed by automatic restoration to normal operating conditions, thus transforming severe emergency into a short transient process.","PeriodicalId":307118,"journal":{"name":"IEEE PES ISGT Europe 2013","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131662761","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The development and testing process of algorithms exploiting real time wide area data from Phasor Measurement Units (PMU) can be very time consuming, especially if the testing procedure is not carried out in a systematic and automatic manner. The test platform overcomes this problem by automatically importing system model parameters, topology and simulation output from a time domain simulation of an instability scenario and automatically generating synthetic PMU snapshots of the system conditions. To demonstrate the platform's potential for supporting research and development of wide area algorithms, a method to detect voltage instability is implemented and tested, giving results consistent with results from literature.","PeriodicalId":307118,"journal":{"name":"IEEE PES ISGT Europe 2013","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133791832","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These variable energy resources (VERs) have the potential to raise the vulnerability of the power grid after sudden changes of weather. Given these new power grid behaviors, the goal becomes to provide the operator with a greater level of situational awareness. This work proposes a methodology to enhance the core of the Energy Management system - the state estimator. Traditional state estimation (SE) is combined with weather forecast data to provide the operator with an understanding of the system behavior a step into the future. This “Weather-Aided State Estimator” can enhance the system operator's reaction to weather events with advanced notice and forewarning; enabling greater reliability of power grids with a high penetration of VERs. The paper outlines the methodology to implement the WASE along with results to illustrate the information which can be provided to the operator.","PeriodicalId":307118,"journal":{"name":"IEEE PES ISGT Europe 2013","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130919319","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The growing number of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) leads to the need for a distributed and decentralized control architecture. A Multi-Agent System (MAS) has been selected as distributed control architecture for Smart Micro Grids, to be provided as Cloud Computing Service. This work defines the architecture scenario by explaining the different actors and how they are connected to one another. Furthermore, it identifies the key factors to design the proposed MAS as Cloud Computing Service. The evaluation of selected key factors is based on a specific Cloud Computing Service that the MAS could provide. Once a disturbance occurs, its propagation might cause cascading events and even large blackouts. However, with the help of advanced communications network in smart grid, new control strategies can be devised by the reveal of disturbance propagation mechanisms. In this paper, disturbance propagation in chained power network is studied from the point of view of network structure and parameters. The discrete inertia model of power systems is built. The increment motion equation of generator is formulated. Then, the wave transfer function is derived which can be used to describe the amplitude and phase variation of disturbance waves. The cut-off frequency of discrete inertia model is proposed to determine the upper limit of disturbance frequency. Furthermore, the computer simulations are carried out and the results demonstrate the validity of the proposed theory.","PeriodicalId":307118,"journal":{"name":"IEEE PES ISGT Europe 2013","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132924411","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
