Supply of blood in an emergency requires stringent storage conditions with quality checked and should be available at the time of demand to the needy. So blood banks play a vital role in this demand-supply process. On the other hand, because of the biological nature of blood, it is very vulnerable to contamination by infections, early expiry and hemolysis. The purpose of this study was to determine the reasons for the wastage of blood and blood components. Materials and Methods : At our tertiary care teaching hospital blood bank we conducted a retrospective analysis of data of all whole blood and blood component samples collected from January 2013 to December 2020. Results: 391 (9%) of the 4022 entire blood bags collected were discarded 132 (32%) of them were eliminated due to hemolysis and lipolysis and the same 32% expired due to completion of the life span of RBC. Sero-reactivity for TTI or transfusion-transmitted diseases was 22.4% and only 13% were rejected for use because of some leakage or inadequate quantity of blood in the bag. Conclusion: An adequately conducted donor screening, notification and counseling of permanently deferred donors will help in discarding less number of bags that are positive for different TTI. Properly implemented blood transfusion policies will help to utilize the blood components in a proper way resulting in discarding the number of blood bags due to expiry.","PeriodicalId":30624,"journal":{"name":"Perspectives In Medical Research","volume":"96 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136242654","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most of the biochemical markers are negative in early phase acute myocardial ischemia. Recent literature reports have shown more interest in a new biochemical marker which is Ischemia-modified albumin for the detection of myocardial injury. Objective: to estimate the level of ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease in diabetes mellitus patients. Materials and methods: A case-control study was undertaken with sixty Type-2 diabetic patients as cases and sixty non-diabetic healthy subjects as controls. Demographic data (sex, age), an ECG and Biochemical data were collected. Blood for IMA and HbA1C levels was collected within two hours of arrival, and IMA risk marker testing was performed before any heparin/thrombolytic treatment was started. Controlled and uncontrolled diabetic patients were determined by the level of their HBA1c and comparison with the means of IMA level in their serum. Results : The IMA was significantly increased in diabetic patients compared to healthy controls, with cut off value (0.92 IU/L), and there is also a significant increase in IMA level in uncontrolled diabetic patients (Mean ± SD; 240.55 + 52.5) that presented with acute chest pain and have signs and symptoms of cardiac ischemia when compared with the well-controlled diabetic patients(Mean ± SD; 159.8 ± 60.4). Conclusion: Ischemic Modified Albumin (IMA) level was elevated significantly in uncontrolled diabetic patients with early signs of early myocardial ischemia. Additionally, IMA estimation may improve our ability to identify ischaemic patients who are missed by current diagnostic strategies, or more confidently rule out patients who do not have ACS.","PeriodicalId":30624,"journal":{"name":"Perspectives In Medical Research","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136242661","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It accounts for less than 0.1% of breast conditions in developed countries but reaches about 3-4% in developing high TB endemic regions. It usually occurs in multiparous and lactating women. The clinical, radiological and pathological presentation may often mimic breast abscess, idiopathic granulomatous mastitis or carcinoma. The most common presentation is that of a lump. Constitutional symptoms are not usually present. The most common site is the right upper outer quadrant of the breast. It also occurs in association with Immunosuppression disorders such as HIV. Here we present a case of a young, multiparous non- lactating woman with tubercular mastitis, confirmed by FNAC of the mass. The Tuberculin skin test was positive and the patient improved with anti-tubercular treatment.","PeriodicalId":30624,"journal":{"name":"Perspectives In Medical Research","volume":"145 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136242511","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The promotion of positive body image improves people’s quality of life and behaviors related to health. Social factors, sociocultural influences, media pressure, and the pursuit of an ideal body, associated with accomplishments and happiness are among the causes of changes in the perception of body image, leading to dissatisfaction. There is very less literature on these topics among males and also medical students. Objectives: To assess body image perception and the influence of sociocultural factors on it and self-esteem among undergraduate students of a medical college. Methods : A cross-sectional study was carried out among 192 undergraduate medical students of a medical college from June 2021 to September 2021 using a predesigned pretested self-administered questionnaire in English. Results: Out of 200 students included in the study the mean age of study subjects was 19.78 ± 1.39 years, of which,107(56%) were males and 85(44%) were females. The 192 students were classified as Underweight (27(14%)), Normal weight (78(41%)), Overweight (43(22%)) and Obese I (44(23%)) according to Asian WHO BMI classification. BISS scores (which measure body image satisfaction) were the median of the six items after reverse-scoring the three positive-to-negative items which were found to be 5.5(4-7) and 53% of students showed body image dissatisfaction. 33% (63 students) of students have thin/low body fat internalization and about 77(40%) have muscular/athletic internalization.54(28%) students mostly agree about family pressure to attain the ideal appearance, 53(28%) feel pressure from peers and 75(39%) mostly agree with influence of media to attain ideal appearance. Out of the 192 students,124(64%) showed normal self-esteem, 63(33%) with low self-esteem, and 5(3%) with high self-esteem as per Rosenberg’s self-esteem score. A statistically significant association was found between BMI and body image perception and also between Body image perception with sociocultural attitudes toward the appearance and self-esteem of students. Conclusion: Body image dissatisfaction affects young students. In this study, about 53% of the students showed body image dissatisfaction. This perception of self has mainly been influenced by media (39%), family pressure (28%), and peer pressure (28%). Also, 33% of the students have low esteem with a significant association between Body image perception and self-esteem.","PeriodicalId":30624,"journal":{"name":"Perspectives In Medical Research","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135693366","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
