The species belonging to the genus Eogammarus are sharing several plesiomorphic characteristics, so they are similar to each other. However, Eogammarus possjeticus can be discriminated from congeners by the following characters combined: appendages are not fossorial, setations of antennae are weak, and the number and position of robust setae on pleonal epimera, urosomes, and telson are different from its congeners. This is the first record of the genus Eogammarus Birstein, 1933 from Korean waters.","PeriodicalId":30453,"journal":{"name":"Animal Systematics Evolution and Diversity","volume":"1 1","pages":"18-29"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70779639","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These two vorticellids are newly recorded in Korea. The two species are described using live and silver impregnated cell observations, morphometry, line drawings, and microphotographs. Characterizations were based on the following diagnostic features: Carchesium polypinum was observed mainly as a funnel to fan-shaped colony, basically dichotomous branching pattern, discontinuous spasmoneme, subconical shaped zooid, J shaped macronucleus, ventrally positioned single contractile vacuole, and pellicular striation with 61 - 80 rows between the peristomial lip and aboral ciliary wreath, and 18 - 30 rows between the aboral ciliary wreath and scopula. Vorticella campanula was conspicuously characterized by the broadly bulged peristomial lip, wide conical shaped zooid, J or S shaped macronucleus, ventrally positioned single contractile vacuole and pellicular striation with 64 75 rows between the peristomial lip and aboral ciliary wreath, and 27 - 41 rows between the aboral ciliary wreath and scopula. Using several survey methods, such as Sherman’s live trap, footprint, caves, excretions, and road-kill investigations, the mammals observed on Jindo Island were found to be from 5 orders and 9 families, including 12 species in total. Among them, three species of small mammals were Mogera wogura, Crocidura shantungensis, and Apodemus agrarius. Additionally, two legally protected species were found through excretion observations. Lutra lutra and Prionailurus bengalensis, which were designated to endangered wild animal classes I and II, respectively. The survey results can be used as a valuable resource for identifying the distribution and habitat status of mammals in the Jindo-gun area, as well as for building a database for ecosystem preservation.","PeriodicalId":30453,"journal":{"name":"Animal Systematics Evolution and Diversity","volume":"1 1","pages":"73-79"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70779583","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The island is the principle island among the cluster of 230 islets in the south western part of the Korean peninsula. The island has many park reserves like the Dadohae National Marine Park, historical relics and sites. According to the weather data from Haenam meteorological station closest to the investigation, the average temperature for the year is 14.4°C, and the mean annual precipitation is 1,360.2 mm (average last 30 years, National Weather Service) (Korea Meteorological Administration, 2013). National Institute of Enviromental Research (2012a, 2012b, 2012c, 2012d, 2012e, 2012f) studies on the insect fauna on Jindo Island reported 671 species belonging to 108 families of 12 Orders and identified 412 species of 28 families in lepidopterous insects. Also Sohn et al. (2005) are reported a total of 573 lepidopterous species belonging to 37 families. The objective of the present study was to clarify insect fauna from Jindo Island. The results of this study might offer distinctive information for biodiversity conservation and management of coastal islands in Korea. We focused on lepidopterous insect fauna to provide basic information for future research studies to investigate the causes of diverse changes in the ecosystem of Jindo Island.","PeriodicalId":30453,"journal":{"name":"Animal Systematics Evolution and Diversity","volume":"1 1","pages":"51-72"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70779593","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
