This discussion has tended to ignore sea transport, often because shipping is viewed as being slow, inexpensive and generally appropriate for only low value non time-sensitive goods. The aim of this paper is to establish what sea transport system between Scotland and England, especially in terms of service specification, would need to be provided if a maritime option was to be competitive with road transport. Analysis of a recently introduced coastal freight ferry service in Italy provides some idea of what makes the maritime alternative competitive and attractive to users. Interviews with potential users of such a service in the UK gives some insight into their views and perceptions of coastal shipping. More importantly, their views serve to illustrate what any maritime alternative would need to offer in order to have any chance of success. Given current road freight traffic volumes, three potential freight ferry routes between Scotland and England are identified. However, it is argued that only sophisticated high-speed freight ferries would be able to complete with current road transport services. High-speed freight ferries could offer the same price and transit time as road haulage. However, such a revolutionary transport alternative may still have difficulty in combating what is a very road-oriented industry, although measures to increase the relative costs of long distance road transport would undoubtedly aid any modal shift from road to sea.","PeriodicalId":30425,"journal":{"name":"Transport Logistics","volume":"5 1","pages":"103-113"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85395187","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to relieve these problems, area-wide inter-carrier consolidation of freight has been proposed, but there are few successful cases of its introduction. One exception is Tenjin, a central business district in Fukuoka, Japan. This paper clarifies the social effects of the consolidation system and describes the necessary conditions to introduce and maintain it in urban areas. This can be accomplished by building mathematical models based upon the Tenjin example and making a sensitivity analysis under different conditions and policy alternatives.","PeriodicalId":30425,"journal":{"name":"Transport Logistics","volume":"127 1","pages":"87-101"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73236005","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sophisticated computer packages have been developed to help with this but the packages are normally only used by large organisations. Smaller organisations still, largely, depend on 'rule of thumb' methods. The article argues that the power of modern spreadsheet software, such as Microsoft 'Excel' allows all organisations to use a personal computer to produce optimal transportation allocations quickly and easily. This is demonstrated using a simple, worked example.","PeriodicalId":30425,"journal":{"name":"Transport Logistics","volume":"212 1","pages":"129-137"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79439568","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The threat that shippers may reintegrate logistics activities, which has always existed, has become more acute in Europe over the past two years. The management of information, expertise and knowledge is according to us a major strategical factor for LSPs to avert a major swing back to in-house operation. Information management is vital as shippersneed to exert tight control over their logistical operations and to maintain their expertise in this area. Skills management is important for LSPs either to differentiate their services and/or to develop complex or innovative logistics services. The management of LSPs, like that of all businesses, depends on three inter-related dimensions of competence : action, expertise and knowledge; and the need for effective collection, communication and processing of information exists on each dimension. In managing information, LSPs must establish congruence with the shippers’ systems that can be achieved on one or more of the dimensions. This highlights the importance of the design of LICS and the supporting information and communication technologies to the furure competitiveness of LSPs. Close integration of the information systems of LSPs and shippers will be essential to maintain the mutual trust necessary for long term relationship and to maintain their ability to adapt to the changing business environment.","PeriodicalId":30425,"journal":{"name":"Transport Logistics","volume":"1 1","pages":"115-127"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86409688","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study makes use of a disaggregate data base to examine the role of factors such as cargo weight and nautical distance as determinants of standard (dry van) container rates. The nature of the customer (freight forwarder, consignee or shipper) is examined to reflect the influences of requirement variations on pricing in addition to that of the commodity cost of provision. The study uses basic statistical procedures to consider variability of rates and to relate these to the set of explanatory factors. No previous studies of conference pricing have included a customer type variable.","PeriodicalId":30425,"journal":{"name":"Transport Logistics","volume":"30 1","pages":"21-30"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81405473","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Their industry is relatively new, with more than half of their companies having initiated operations since 1984. Most of their companies are subsidiaries of large transportation or warehousing enterprises. These service providers are becoming increasingly international, with nearly all of them having expanded their operations outside the US. As the industry continues to evolve, the large providers are increasingly turning to alliances with other companies as a means of broadening their services offerings. Transportation services, warehousing, and value-added services are the industry's most significant revenue generators. The net investment, employment base, and customer base of these companies vary considerably. All of the survey respondents reported annual revenues in excess of $50 million, with one exceeding $1 billion. Many of the companies have attempted to niche themselves in particular industries, and, to date, they have primary focused their sales efforts on large corporations. The industry continues to grow rapidly, with more than two-thirds of the CEOs projecting one and three year company growth rates in excess of 20 percent. According to the CEOs, the most important industrial dynamics affecting the industry are increased interest in outsourcing logistics activities, greater interest in one-stop shopping, and increased CEO/CFO participation in considering the third-party option.","PeriodicalId":30425,"journal":{"name":"Transport Logistics","volume":"4 1","pages":"51-66"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90643547","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper examines possible reasons for this trend and identifies five contributory factors: the lengthening of lorry journeys, increasing number of drops per trip, expansion of load-matching services, growth in the reverse flow of packaging material/handling equipment and greater effort by shippers to obtain return loads. Original survey data are used to classify and rank the different types of return loading in which manufacturers and retailers engage. Company responses suggest that backloading is likely to increase significantly, though still be subject to numerous constraints. The paper examines these constraints in detail and suggests ways in which they might be relaxed. The development of supply chain management, advances in vehicle routeing software and increasing road transport costs are likely to promote more balanced vehicle loading.","PeriodicalId":30425,"journal":{"name":"Transport Logistics","volume":"67 1","pages":"1-19"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88227000","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Commonly expected benefits include less inventory in the supply chain and enhanced levels of customer service. One important example of a transport information system is track and trace, in which the movements of a particular consignment can be monitored as it passes through the transport network. In many cases the application of track and trace systems has been in response to a perception that customers would want information on request concerning the progress of their consignments. In this way, the customers would be reassured that the transport service was working as expected. However, research by the authors has shown new possibilities which may have substantially greater appeal to transport customers. Track and trace systems, along with associated booking systems, are capable of generating databases with important potential applications. For example, by recording occurrences of transport system failure, management can be systematically alerted to the need to take action. Such databases can therefore make a key contribution to total quality management (TQM) programmes designed to improve services and, as a result, competitiveness. Similarly, databases information can be used to considerable effect in customer retention programmes. Information on the buying habits of customers can be the basis for differentiating service levels and pricing to match more closely the demands of customers. As competition in the European transport market intensifies it has never been more important for management to use data as creatively as possible to retain - or preferably expand - market shares.","PeriodicalId":30425,"journal":{"name":"Transport Logistics","volume":"29 1","pages":"67-82"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77394978","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper examines the role that Telematics are playing in advanced Logistics and the factors that will influence the final outcome as regards new logistics concepts and services in Europe in the near future. First, a concise description of the basic Telematics applications is given with a reference to their content and potential benefits. Then the area of advanced Logistics is explored with reference to functions and hierarchies so that basic notions are defined. The impacts of Telematics on advanced Logistics are then examined and analyzed. These impacts are seen as filling in three main categories: a) Impacts towards greater logistics integration, i.e. systems of logistics support, that encompass many or even all levels of activities from manufacturing to transportation, and distribution. b) Impacts towards enabling the re-engineering of logistics processes and, most importantly, within the overall business process re-engineering. c) Impacts towards greater inter-company optimization and liaison with users, i.e. between suppliers and users or between transporters and shippers, etc. In the final section, the paper discusses the constraints that exist in the materialization of the above impacts, and the policy implications for European governments and the EU.","PeriodicalId":30425,"journal":{"name":"Transport Logistics","volume":"70 1","pages":"31-49"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84114072","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
