Data was collected by using Computerized Speech Lab (CSL 4300B)and analyzed by using Praat 4.3.14. The results revealed that eight vowels had different F1, F2, and F3 values. Formants of each vowel had significantly higher frequency values in females than in males. Some consonants such as stops, affricative, and fricative showed significant differences in frequency according to the vowels that followed. Unlike other consonants, nasal and liquid were not significantly affected by vowels that followed. The peak frequencies of consonants followed by vowels appeared as follows:600-3,500 Hz for /k/, /k’/, /k/ of stops, 4,000 Hz or above for /t/, /t’/, /t/ and 1,000-2,500 Hz for /p/, /p’/, /p/. With the frequency of fricative [s], [s’] were 4,000-6,000 Hz and affricative /ts/, /ts’/, /ts/ were 3,500-5,000 Hz, their frequencies appearing to be higher than stops. Liquid and nasal showed lower than 500 Hz of frequency value. These findings suggest that the frequency band of the Korean phoneme can be usefully applied for evaluation and rehabilitation suitable for Koreans.","PeriodicalId":30299,"journal":{"name":"Audiology","volume":"1 1","pages":"59-66"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68457632","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hereupon, author analyzed the correlation of depression between normal and hearing loss, using KGDS (Korean Form of Geriatric Depression Scale), as well as ascertained the influence of hearing loss on depression and the applicability to screening test data. Methods:The subjects were composed of the 108 aged over 65 years old (normal;37, hearing loss;71) and their average age was 77.06 years old. Pure-tone audiometry was practiced over the whole frequency band and KGDS was drawn up through bone conduction test and tympanometer. Results:Results were as follows. First, The male accounted for higher proportion of the hearing loss in the aged over 65 years old, but the female was higher in geriatric depression. Considering the cause of depression, the males were mostly caused by negative thinking and unhappiness feeling, and physical weakening and decreased vitality had the highest percentage of the female’s. Second, The group whose hearing threshold heightened in high-frequency band hearing lose was observed showed more serious depression, compared with the group doing not have hearing loss. Moderate hearing loss-based depression was prominent in case of trisection method, and moderate severe hearing loss was prominent in case of quadrisection methd. Third, The reason why the aged over 65 years old, who have hearing loss, feel depressive was mostly caused by physical weakening and decreased vitality, concurrently with some psychological factors such as cognitive dysfunction, negative thinking and unhappiness feeling, etc. Finally, In proportion to the increase of their depression, their complaints about hearing loss increased. Conversely, their complaints decreased when their depression was relatively low. Conclusions:It is expected that the result of this study may be used to make the aged over 65 years old rightly recognize the problem of hearing loss and the importance of early treatment and rehabilitative therapy, and may be used to correctly ascertain the geriatric depression that psychologically depresses the aged. Moreover, it may be applied to the screening test data that helps the specialists to counsel those who have hearing loss and to select hearing aids and something else.","PeriodicalId":30299,"journal":{"name":"Audiology","volume":"1 1","pages":"51-58"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68457571","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As the developmental effects of a profound hearing loss are multiple, cochlear implants have been applied to ever younger children in an attempt to promote a more normal level of developmental learning through audition. However, rehabilitaion therapists must realize that intensive and long-duration auditory-verbal education is required postoperatively to achieve this goal. Two children with auditory rehabilitation for about 5 months after the operation were evaluated to examine how auditory perception would improve. Both cases showed benefits of aural rehabilitation. After the cochlea implant surgical operation, aural rehabilitation is reguired and education for natural language development should be run parallel accordingly.","PeriodicalId":30299,"journal":{"name":"Audiology","volume":"1 1","pages":"90-93"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68457743","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Especially, this experiment focused on the difference between the omni and adaptive directional modes in noisy situation. Subjects consisted of 10 adults with moderately-severe sensorineural hearing loss in both ears. All subjects were bilaterally fitted with behind-the-ear hearing aids. The Korean speech perception in noise (KSPIN) tests were performed for two directional modes at each SNR of 0 dB and +5 dB to measure the speech intelligibility. The babble noise was placed in the back of patients (180°C) and the signal source was placed in front of patients (0°C). Results showed that the speech intelligibility with the adaptive mode was higher than that with the omni mode in both 0 dB and 5 dB SNR conditions. The difference was greater at the condition of 5 dB SNR and the adaptive mode improved about 5 dB SNR in noisy situation when the noise was placed at the azymuth of 180°C, Most subjects also preferred the adaptive mode to the omni mode. It is suggested that the adaptive directional microphone can improve the speech intelligibility in noisy situation. These information may be utilized with caution when counseling the hearing aid selection.","PeriodicalId":30299,"journal":{"name":"Audiology","volume":"1 1","pages":"80-84"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68457681","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In C57BL/6 mice, hair cell loss begins around 1–2 months of age and progresses rapidly along a base-to-apex gradient, whereas CBA mice show relatively little hair cell loss until late in life. This anatomical difference is reflected in dehydrogenase histochemistry, an indirect measure of aerobic energy metabolism. A small, but significant, decrease in hair cell dehydrogenase staining occurred in CBA mice between 1.5 and 18 months of age. Significantly, dehydrogenase levels in 1.5-month C57 mice were substantially lower than in CBA mice of any age. Thus, deficits in aerobic energy metabolism presage degeneration of the hair cells. The superoxide radical, O2−, a normal byproduct of cellular metabolism, is potentially toxic and can cause cellular damage if it is not inactivated by superoxide dismutases. Cytosolic copper/zinc superoxide dismutase (SOD 1) is highly expressed in the cochlea. Knockout mutant mice with a single (HET) or double deletion (KO) of the Sodl gene coding for SOD1 showed greater age-related losses than wild-type (WT) mice. KO mice had the worst hearing, WT the best, and HETs were intermediate. KOs exhibited considerably greater hair cell loss than WT mice; however, losses in KOs were only slightly greater than in HETs. KO mice showed significantly greater loss of spiral ganglion cells and nerve fibers than WT mice. These results indicate that SOD1 and O2− play important roles in age-related hearing loss. Intervention strategies targeting O2− may reduce age-related hearing loss.","PeriodicalId":30299,"journal":{"name":"Audiology","volume":"40 1","pages":"313 - 321"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3109/00206090109073128","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69476253","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, a new central auditory test battery was composed and standardized for use with adult populations and older children. The test battery comprised seven tests (words in noise, filtered speech, binaural fusion, sentences in noise, dichotic digits, frequency and duration patterns, backward masking) and a questionnaire. Descriptive statistics obtained from 28 Dutch adults with normal hearing are presented. Eleven of the subjects were retested. The test-retest results showed that the variability between subjects was not due to systematic effects. Except for the backward masking test, the results were comparable with data from other studies. As most test scores did not follow a normal distribution, cut-off scores are recommended to evaluate individual subjects. Experiments on subjects with suspected CAPDs are in progress to validate the test battery and to see whether the number of tests can be reduced.","PeriodicalId":30299,"journal":{"name":"Audiology","volume":"40 1","pages":"69 - 77"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3109/00206090109073102","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69474204","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This has been facilitated by advances in objective screening methods such as auditory brainstem response (ABR) and otoacoustic emissions (OAE). However, the prospects for this trend in developing countries remain doubtful, because of adverse socio-economic conditions. Consequently, the relative effectiveness of available tests was evaluated to determine the most viable option for mass screening based on findings from a broader study among 359 school entrants (mean age 6.7 years) in Lagos. The specificity of the questionnaire for detecting hearing loss was 94.0 per cent as against 62.4 per cent for otoscopy and 84.0 per cent for tympanometry. The sensitivities for the three methods were 10.0 per cent, 56.0 per cent and 52.0 per cent, while the positive predictive values were 21.7 per cent, 19.4 per cent and 34.6 per cent respectively. Notwithstanding its limitations, the administration of a well-structured questionnaire at school entry, complemented with parental education, may constitute the inevitable and immediate option for an early detection program in a developing country. El concepto de identificación temprana en neonatos en un lapso específico que favorezca el desarrollo neural en la infancia temprana ha sido promovido por los avances tecnológicos como los potenciales evocados auditivos y las emisiones otoacusticas. Sin embargo, las posibilidades de utilizar estas herramientas en los países en desarrollo son aun inciertas debido a condiciones socio-ecónomicas adversas. Por ello, con base en los resultados de un estudio de 359 escolares (edad promedio 6.7 años) en Lagos, se evaluó la eficacia relativa de las pruebas disponibles para determinar la opción más viable para la identificación masiva. La especificidad del cuestionario para determinar hipoacusia fue del 94%, la otoscopia del 62.4% y la timpoanometría del 84%. La sensibilidad de los tres metodos fue del 10, 56 y 52% mientras que los valores predictivos positivos fueron del 21.7, 19.4 y 34.6% respectivamente. A pesar de sus limitaciones, la aplicación de un muestrario bien estructurado al ingreso escolar, complementado con la educación de los padres puede constituir la opción más viable e inmediata para un programa de identificación temprana de problemas auditivos en países en desarrollo.","PeriodicalId":30299,"journal":{"name":"Audiology","volume":"40 1","pages":"141 - 147"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3109/00206090109073109","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69474395","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
