The European Union’s strategies adopted most of the ideas and member states followed. The European construction industry too stared to explore how to benefit from it. In this review paper, we explain the ideas behind Industry 4.0. We present aspects of Industry 4.0: what it means for the customer, business and industry as a whole. Based on that framework we analysed the potentials of Industry 4.0 in the construction industry and where – due to some specifics of the industry – construction is actually ahead in adopting the Industry 4.0 concepts. Based on a survey of 181 large and medium-sized Slovenian companies, we discover six differently successful organizational patterns. The most successful identified pattern is the business–IT partnership approach, where top management and the IT department are responsible for the digital transformation, and the CIO is an orchestrator and a member of top management. However, this is not the only possible successful approach for digital transformation. Recommendations and possible evolutionary paths for companies in each pattern are also outlined in the paper, including the importance of orchestrating the activities and actors of digital transformation and its strategic role. The model, which is built in the tradition of New Keynesian models, closely follows the structure of the model developed by Adolfson et al. (2007) and Masten (2010). We estimate the model using a Bayesian method on quarterly Slovenian macroeconomic data covering the period 1995-2014. Beyond evaluating the properties of the estimated model, we discuss the role of various shocks in explaining macroeconomic fluctuations in the Slovenian economy to illustrate the model’s potential in structural business cycle analysis. We predict that cost behavior at the middle management level is sticky also when the magnitude of sales increase is sufficiently large, considering that middle managers have more limited ability in adding resources and are more risk averse. Using a survey instrument and interviews, we find evidence that middle managers’ cost decisions are sticky at both ends. Our findings are supported by empirical evidence based on segment-level data. It provides a model-based theoretical background for the Harrod-Balassa-Samuelson phenomenon that describes the relationship between productivity and price inflation within different sectors in a particular economy. Both, the calibrated and the estimated model are able to show that the Harrod-Balassa-Samuelson effect is confirmed by inducing tradable sector productivity shocks as they drive the non-tradable sector price inflation higher than the tradable sector price inflation. By doing this, we overcome the problem that the tradable productivity increase in a typical open economy specification reduces the relative price of domestic tradable goods relative to the foreign ones.
