One of the many achievements is that two separate translation genres have been identified, i.e. literary and non-literary translation, followed by different approaches to both theoretical explorations of the two, as well as practical solutions in the process of translating them. The aim of this article is to contribute to the study of non-literary translation by offering an overview of translation techniques available in the literature but not yet distinctly related to non-literary translation. Since recent approaches to the study of translation imply a strong focus on the target text as a product, the techniques illustrated here are supported by examples originating from an authentic corpus of non-literary translation compiled during twenty-two years of officially recognized translation.","PeriodicalId":30162,"journal":{"name":"Facta Universitatis Series Linguistics and Literature","volume":"15 1","pages":"035-047"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45709913","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most mainstream accounts of deixis in language simply overlook this point and emphasize the fact that although deixis is more attentional and intentional, it still remains elusive for any semantic and pragmatic framework. Our paper attempts to pave the way for a treatment of deictic phenomena that is based on the notion of ‘personhood’, i.e. on the pre-reflective perception of space-time, which is, furthermore, one of the basic tenets of intersubjectivity in human cognition. This is evident as lived space is deeply intertwined with deixis, or, if one wishes so, the other way round. It seems obvious that constant shifts of personal subjectivity (dependent on contingent intersubjectivity) undermine the rationalist and empiricist standpoints about there being one monolithic percept called 'reality'.","PeriodicalId":30162,"journal":{"name":"Facta Universitatis Series Linguistics and Literature","volume":"1 1","pages":"001-009"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47712735","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Le corpus repertorie differents composants relevant de la paremiologie. Nous traitons d’abord de proverbes serbes en correlation avec les proverbes homologues en francais. Ensuite, nous nous occupons des comparaisons appartenant a la paremie. Finalement, nous proposons quelques parallelismes serbes dans le but de les relier aux parallelismes francais. A cette occasion, nous mettons en evidence les figures de style. Nous expliquons les tropes, ainsi que les autres figures de style permettant la comprehension du corpus propose. Dans ce but, nous insistons particulierement sur la difference entre la comparaison et la metaphore. L’objectif de l’article est d’une nature bipolaire. D’un cote, nous nous interessons a la structure mentale des peuples serbe et francais pour comparer leurs points communs et leurs differences. De l’autre cote, vu que les proverbes se basent toujours sur le sens figure, nous essayons de trouver les figures de style qui permettent leur bonne comprehension.","PeriodicalId":30162,"journal":{"name":"Facta Universitatis Series Linguistics and Literature","volume":"15 1","pages":"049-062"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46096037","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Mit diesem Werk wollte Hauptmann eine scharfe Gesellschaftskritik an dem Berliner Grosstadtleben seiner Zeit ausuben. Gerade deshalb hat er zwei Welten in seinem Drama parallel spielen lassen, obwohl diese auch ohne einander auskommen konnten. Die Figuren, die im Drama vertreten sind, gehoren zweifellos fast allen gesellschaftlichen Schichten an: „Lumpenproletariat (Bruno), Proletariat mit kleinburgerlicher Tendenz (Familie John), burgerliche Intelligenzkreise (die Familie Hassenreuter und Spitta), heruntergekommene Aristokratie (Frau Knobbe).“ Meisterhaft hat Hauptmann den Schauplatz der Handlung gewahlt. Gemas dem Naturalismus beschreibt er ins kleinste Datail den Ort und das Elend, in dem die Figuren leben. Dem Leser bzw. Zuschauer zeigt sich das Bild des Berliner Grosstadtlebens jener Zeit. Der Ort, an dem diese Menschen leben d.h. in einer verseuchten Mietskaserne, zeigt die sozialen Verhaltnisse dieser Gesellschaft.","PeriodicalId":30162,"journal":{"name":"Facta Universitatis Series Linguistics and Literature","volume":"14 1","pages":"137-146"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-02-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48647940","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These “human color” adjectives have somewhat different extensions compared to the adjective white, and this is frequently manifested in their inability to realize themselves within certain grammatical structures, in which it is still possible to realize the adjective white. With the use of the conceptual integration theory, an attempt has been made to explain the relationship between the semantic extensions of these adjectives.","PeriodicalId":30162,"journal":{"name":"Facta Universitatis Series Linguistics and Literature","volume":"1 1","pages":"161-172"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-02-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48015221","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Taste makes waist < Haste makes waste; Dobro se dobro zaboravlja < Dobro se dobrim vraca), and examines the strategies employed in the two languages in the process of their creation. The paper concludes that the process of creation of anti-proverbs from proverbs involves a number of strategies, all of them typically leading to the emergence of a new expression with a clear communicative message. Those strategies generally involve lexical substitution or lexical addition, whereby the overall syntactic pattern can be either preserved or changed. It also concludes that the strategies used in the creation of anti-proverbs, as well as their topics, are quite comparable both in English and in Serbian. The paper also presents a number of theoretical and methodological implications for further research.","PeriodicalId":30162,"journal":{"name":"Facta Universitatis Series Linguistics and Literature","volume":"1 1","pages":"129-136"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-02-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42817616","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The analysis is based on the well - known proposal by Leonard Talmy (1975, 1985, 1991, 2000) that languages fall into two main types as to how they encode motion events. Special attention is devoted to English and Serbian verbs of emission (VE) (specifically verbs of sound and verbs of light emission), regarding their potential to surface as verbs of motion and combine with directional phrases within motion event constructions. The analysis aims at contrasting both verbal sub-subclasses in English and Serbian for the purpose of identifying the relevant points of similarities and divergences between the two language systems being analysed. The theoretical claims of the analysis are empirically supported by a contrastive sentential corpus which further promotes the claim that the potential of VE is wider in scope than was initially proposed by Levin (1993).","PeriodicalId":30162,"journal":{"name":"Facta Universitatis Series Linguistics and Literature","volume":"1 1","pages":"147-159"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-02-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44121811","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Jovanović","doi":"10.22190/FULL1602189G","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.22190/FULL1602189G","url":null,"abstract":"First introduced to the study of language by Robin Lakoff in her 1975 book Language and Woman's Place, gender has gained a status of a significant variable when it comes to language realization (Frank, 1978). As such, gender is an object of many sociolinguistic studies (Jespersen, 1922; Kramer, 1974; Edelsky, 1976; Thorne et al, 1983; Crawford, 1995) and is assumed not only to play a role in the pragmatics of language usage, but also to influence the frequency and nature of different lexical and structural realizations, resulting in what Kramer termed “a genderlect” (Kramer, 1974). The aim of this paper is to present the results of a case-study of periphrastic and inflectional instances of the grammatical category of comparison in English, attempting at answering the question whether gender causes a preference for periphrasis in language usage, which, in the broadest sense, presents a multi-unit alternative to a single-unit meaning, be the meaning lexical or grammatical, and the unit a word or a bound morpheme. We analyzed a sex-wise and quantity-wise symmetrical corpus, comprised of different registers and genres – fiction, scientific non-fiction, and on-line magazine articles, encompassing a million words approximately per sex, and looked for the frequency of periphrastic instances of the two categories. Our assumption is that gender on its own, with all other social and textual variables excluded (discourse, register, author’s age and social groups, personal language background) is not a sufficient factor to unambiguously and conspicuously determine an author’s/speaker’s preference for the periphrastic form of the studied grammatical values.","PeriodicalId":30162,"journal":{"name":"Facta Universitatis Series Linguistics and Literature","volume":"1 1","pages":"189-208"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-02-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43138580","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present paper is aimed at establishing which pragmatic strategies Serbian ESP learners use in producing refusals, depending on the social status of the interlocutors. To this end, twenty B1-B2 level ESP students aged between 20 and 22, majoring in Information Science or Mathematics were randomly selected. The research is based on a survey consisting of twelve discourse completion tasks (DCTs), involving the communication situations of refusing a request, an invitation, an offer and a suggestion (of which only the former two are analysed here). The data obtained are classified, analyzed and interpreted based on a modified version of Beebe, Takahashi and Uliss-Weltz’s (1990) taxonomy of refusal strategies. The overall results of the research show that the production of the ESP learners tested significantly differs from native speakers' production of refusals. The largest differences are observed with respect to the frequency of usage of direct refusals, providing excuses, reasons and explanations, as well as with respect to adding statements of alternative.","PeriodicalId":30162,"journal":{"name":"Facta Universitatis Series Linguistics and Literature","volume":"1 1","pages":"103-116"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-02-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47557307","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
