Residues of DDTs (p,p-DDT, p,p-DDE, p,p-DDD), hexachlorocyclohexane (HCHs - -HCH, -HCH and -HCH), endosulfan (-endosulfan, -endosulfan, endosulfan sulphate) and heptachlor were detected in fish at average concentrations ranging from 3.0 to 1235.0 g/kg wet wt. These residues were, however, below the detection limit in seawater samples. Significant differences (p < 0.05) in residue levels were also observed across sites, decreasing from Chorkor to Kpone for seven (7) of the residues that were detected in S. aurita. Evaluation of hazard ratios (HRs) and the health risk associated with OC exposure from consumption of sardinellas re-vealed a probability of adverse health effect due to p,p-DDT, -HCH and heptachlor. Hence, p,p-DDT, -HCH and heptachlor may be of particular health concern.","PeriodicalId":301438,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Ghana Science Association","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114155013","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two conceptual ap-proaches, namely total time approach and rate limiting step approach, have been used to im-prove upon an existing comprehensive stratospheric chemistry model to calculate the coefficient of linearised ozone chemistry scheme. The total time approach is accurate in calculating for the coefficients of the ozone chemistry scheme whiles the rate limiting step approach is effective in assessing the contributions of the individual catalytic cycles to the ozone budget. The catalytic cycle with the rate limiting step of NO2/O is very prominent in altitudes between 15 and 48 km, and peaks at 30 km with ozone loss percentage contribution of about 75%. HO2/O rate limiting step dominates above 40 km and peaks around 58 km with about 90% loss contribution to the ozone budget. Rate limiting steps involving BrO were the least ozone loss reactions in the set at the chosen mid-latitude June condition, and they concentrate at the lower stratosphere.","PeriodicalId":301438,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Ghana Science Association","volume":"149 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130788209","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A number of rodenticides exist on the Ghanaian market on which there is limited scientific data on their efficacy and use. This study investigated the efficacy of four rodenticides namely Storm (flocoumafen at 0.005% w/w), Baraki (difethialone at 0.0025% w/w), Chinaman (diphacinone at 0.005% w/w) and Zinc Phosphide on the Ghanaian market, on white laboratory rats (Rattus novigicus). The results indicated that product acceptability by the rats within 24 hours was significantly higher for Storm (20.61.3g) and Baraki (17.85.5g) as compared to Chinaman (5.40.3g) and Zinc Phosphide (3.21.7g) (ANOVA, p < 0.05). Con-sumption of Storm, Baraki and Zinc Phophide produced lethal effects with mean time of death ranging from 4.01, 3.81 to 1.0 days respectively indicating that Baraki and Storm exhibited delayed lethal effects. Although product acceptability for Zinc Phosphide was low, the amount needed to produce lethal effects in white laboratory rats was small and appeared to have been consumed over a single encounter. The study provides baseline data for further investigations and field trials.","PeriodicalId":301438,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Ghana Science Association","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122615526","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We have thus examined IOP in 113 hypertensive patients and compared their IOP with IOP in 74 normotensive patients. The results showed that mean IOP was higher in hypertensive than normotensive subjects (p< 0.001) and there was a significant correlation between blood pressure distribution and IOP in the combined population. Therefore patients with high blood pressure should be screened for open angle glaucoma as a preventive measure.","PeriodicalId":301438,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Ghana Science Association","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124043015","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The extreme environment of the Great Salt Plains (GSP) results in low algal biomass, such that natural selection is likely driven by survival of multiple abiotic stresses rather than rapid growth and biotic interactions. The objective of this study is to determine the effect of combined salinity stress and carbon limitation on growth and photosynthesis in the green alga Picochlorum okla-homensis isolated from the GSP habitat. Algal cells were grown in batch cultures under bicar-bonate sufficiency (control) or low bicarbonate at salinities of 10, 50 and100 ppt. in artificial seawater (AS 100) medium. Cells were physiologically characterized by initial growth rates, cell yields, photosynthetic light-response curves (oxygen evolution), pigment composition, and the chlorophyll fluorescence parameters Fv/Fm, PSII, qP and NPQ. Low bicarbonate and increasing salinity from 10 to 100 ppt, as well as the bicarbonate-salinity interaction resulted in significant lower cell yields and initial growth rates. In general, high salinity resulted in significant primary effects for the majority of variables but a significant effect of bicarbonate and bicarbonate-salinity interaction were less common among the physiological variables. </","PeriodicalId":301438,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Ghana Science Association","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114563032","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The former is associated with an increase in cAMP to illicit the effect of the catecholamine. In the later, β2-AR induces PKA-catalysed phosphorylation of the receptor, which intends couples to Gi, at high concentration. We proposed that, clenbuterol which stimulates glucose uptake at low concentra-tion and inhibits it at high concentration might have identical signalling pathway as adrenaline. Mouse isolated muscles were pre-incubated in flasks containing 3 ml of Krebs-Henseleit Bicar-bonate buffer. After 120 min of pre-incubation, with the appropriate concentration of PTX the muscles were transferred to another incubation flask containing 3 ml of the same buffer and 0.3mCi 2-deoxy[1-14C]glucose containing varying concentrations of adrenaline, clenbuterol or 1nM insulin with or without PTX concentrations of 100ng/ml for adrenaline and clenbuterol and 0.1 or 1.0ng/ml for insulin, or 1M acetylcholine for 45 minutes. Adrenaline stimulated glu-cose uptake in isolated mouse soleus muscle at low concentration (10-10M) and inhibited it at high concentration (10-5M). The effect of the lower concentration was mediated through the β2-AR coupling to the Gs protein and to the Gi protein at high concentration. Similarly, clenbuterol stimulated glucose uptake at lower concentration (10-11M) is mediated through the β2-AR cou-pling to the Gs protein and to the Gi protein at the higher concentration (10-7M). These effects of high concentration of adrenaline and clenbuterol were supported by the fact that 100ng/ml PTX relieved their inhibitory effects. The higher concentration effect of clenbuterol was additionally supported by the fact that, 1M acetylcholine, relieved the inhibitory effect. The films were deposited using the dip technique. The fundamental optical property which has been investigated here is the absorbance of light at room temperature, using the KLB Ultraspec II 4050 (UV/Visible) spectrophotometer over the wavelength range 300 – 900 nm. The energy band gap and absorption coefficient of the films were determined from the absorption spectrum. The optical band gap of the as-deposited films varied from 2.42 eV (x =0.2) to 3.61 eV (x =0.8), that is, the band gap increased with increasing Zn concentration of the alloy. These values compare favorably well with that obtained from literature of similar films prepared using other deposition techniques. The as-deposited samples were thermally annealed in air for an hour at temperatures of 100°C, 200°C and 300°C and the absorption spectra again recorded. It was observed that thermal annealing decreased the band gap of the samples; this may be due to improving crystallinity or alternatively, a phase transformation taking place in the samples as a result of the heat treatment.","PeriodicalId":301438,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Ghana Science Association","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114892665","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Experimental procedures were followed and one basic modification was made to Worrall and Khan measurement of rate of flow of plastic clays in order to prevent sud-den rush of compressed air. Results indicate that plasticity brought about by ageing can be measured for clays in aqueous and organic medium. Clays aged for a further period of six months in aqueous medium showed greater plasticity index values confirming the reliability of the measuring instrument. The study revealed that Teleku Bokazzo Kaolin in organic medium has high plasticity that can be exploited in various product developments especially in refractory production where low iron content clays are usually needed. Plasticity of local clays can be measured accurately and reliable plasticity indices can be controlled by the length of ageing time for consistent manufacturing results.","PeriodicalId":301438,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Ghana Science Association","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115942874","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The results indicate that ageing introduces finer particle sizes due to a progressive increase in the proportion of the fine particles as the system is aged, the critical moisture content of the aged clays are higher than the unaged clays and the strength of all the aged clays tested showed improvement in strength characteristics than the unaged clays. Ageing affects the bulk density of local clays as the inherent porosity is replaced by fine particles that are produced as the clays are aged. Both bulk density and particle size are recognized as powerful indicators of product quality in both manufacturing and strength of the clays.","PeriodicalId":301438,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Ghana Science Association","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127037419","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The fish used in the study was the Black-chinned tilapia Sarotherodon melanotheron . The growth performance of S. melanotheron cultured for six months in the Aglor Lagoon under three different treatments were monitored. In the first treatment, the cultured fish was fed with a feed of 29.80 % protein at 3 % body weight once a day. In the second treatment, bamboo was stacked at a density of 6 per metre square in pens to serve as substrate for periphyton growth and development. In the third treatment, there was no feeding (control). There was significant difference in growth between the fed and the unfed S. melanotheron in the pens, with no significant difference in growth between the fish that subsisted on periphyton de-veloped on bamboo and the other treatments. S. melanotheron cultured in the bamboo equipped pens had the best condition factor of 3.57 ± 0.23. The experimental values of b obtained from the length-weight relationship (W = aLb) for the three treatments were 2.07, 2.13 and 2.80 for feeding, unfed and bamboo respectively. From the results, the least yield was obtained from the unfed control pen (0.045 kg/m2), whilst the highest was from the bamboo equipped pens (0.183 kg/m2).","PeriodicalId":301438,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Ghana Science Association","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122473695","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
