Consider the case when the heat conduction from the dielectric surface to the surroundings is ideally complete. Provided the voltage duration to breakdown tB is sufficiently shorter than the thermal time constant of dielectric tth, that is tB << tth (2) the second term of the left-hand side in eq.(1), which is the heat conduction term, can be ignored. In such a case, the impulse thermal assumption can be expected to be valid [1]. However, many reports have been published which insist the impulse thermal mechanism even under the condition tth < tB [2,3,4,5]. It is surprising that this case appears in the breakdown of plasma-polymerized styrene thin films with about 3000Å thickness [5]. These experimental results imply that provided an unsufficient heat conduction from the dielectric material is taken into account, the impulse thermal breakdown form is possibly established even though the condition tB << tth is not fulfilled. In this paper, a quantitative examination on this relationship is made by solving the fundamental equation of thermal breakdown numerically under the boundary condition which obeys Newton's law of cooling for various values of heat transfer coefficient A from the dielectric surface to the ambient. As an example, assuming ionic conduction and varying the ionic conduction parameters, the electric strength is calculated as a function of λ. From these results, the validity of approximation to the impulse thermal assumption is examined quantitatively. λ is also discussed.","PeriodicalId":301436,"journal":{"name":"Conference on Electrical Insulation & Dielectric Phenomena - Annual Report 1982","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1982-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127199422","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Understanding the mechanism of high frequency propagation in these cables is important in order to evaluate the sensitivity of partial discharge measurements [1,2]. Partial discharges in the solid insulation generate frequencies ranging to several hundred MHz [3]. With wide band detection, location of discharge sites in cable through pulse propagation timing techniques is also possible [4,5,6].","PeriodicalId":301436,"journal":{"name":"Conference on Electrical Insulation & Dielectric Phenomena - Annual Report 1982","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1982-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130622053","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This persistent polarization (electret behaviour) in a non-polar semicrystalline polyethylene film may arise from an injection of charge carriers (electrode injection) and their subsequent localization in the polymer. Such charges may also be prevalent in the virgin polyethylene films as impurity ions. Present work investigates the nature of the dielectric polarization as a function of charging fields before and after hexane treatment of low density polyethylene (LDPE) films using a thermal current transient technique. LDPE films of 75 μm thickness were kindly provided by the Monsanto Chemical Company of Great Britain.","PeriodicalId":301436,"journal":{"name":"Conference on Electrical Insulation & Dielectric Phenomena - Annual Report 1982","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1982-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130488283","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

During this process crystallization of the polymer occurs at a series of different temperatures depending on the thermal conductivity of the polymer in question. For cross-linked polyethylene the polymer is chemically cross-linked immediately after extrusion and prior to quenching. Separation of impurity molecules and of low molecular weight polyethylene molecules generally occur during the crystallization process. The rate at which such separation processes occur may have an influence on electric breakdown behavior. When in use the temperature of the cable may exceed the melting point resulting in re-crystallization under totally different thermal conditions from those under which crystallization occurred during manufacture. A different morphological structure may result under such circumstances. In this paper we wish to report studies of the crystallization behavior of chemically cross-linked polyethylene and to discuss the ways in which it differs from the uncross-linked polymer.","PeriodicalId":301436,"journal":{"name":"Conference on Electrical Insulation & Dielectric Phenomena - Annual Report 1982","volume":"4 4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1982-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116479326","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The acoustic pressure step method originally proposed by Laurençeau et al. [2] recently could be improved significantly achieving resolutions in the order of a few μm [3, 4]. Instead of using pressure steps generated by a shock tube [2] or pressure pulses originating from short and intense laser excitation [3] our technique for pressure step generation [4] makes use of the transient response of a piezoelectric crystal plate. In the experimental arrangement, c.f. Fig. 1, a 100nsec duration, 400 volt pulse from a 50Ω-cο-axial cable discharge generator is applied to the Schematic representation of the experimental technique.
