Their geometry and values of structural parameters λ were measured. Microhardness, frictional wear intensity and the fatigue strength of the alloy surface, refined through rapid solidification, have been investigated. Extensive calorimetric measurements of the net heat input for the gas tungsten arc welding process have been conducted. Arc and melting efficiencies were evaluated. A stepwise regression method was used to develop relationships between GTAW process parameters and energy transfer efficiency, as well as geometry, structure and hardness.","PeriodicalId":301412,"journal":{"name":"Zeitschrift Fur Metallkunde","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133639180","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The powder samples were heated to 1200 °C at 5 and 20 °C min−1 and sintered for 1 h to obtain different sintered microstructures. The homogeneity of the sintered microstructures was evaluated by the standard deviation of the Vickers hardness. The W—W contiguity was calculated by using Voronoi diagrams. The sintered microstructure in case of the 20 °C min−1 sample was more homogeneous and had lower W—W contiguity than the 5 °C min−1 sample. The microstructural homogeneity was directly related to the W—W contiguity. Thermal conductivity of the 20 °C min−1 sample was about 5 % higher than the thermal conductivity of the 5 °C min−1 sample. This indicates that the thermal conductivity is affected by the W—W contiguity resulting from the homogeneity of the sintered microstructure.","PeriodicalId":301412,"journal":{"name":"Zeitschrift Fur Metallkunde","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125069732","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hardness measurement, tensile testing, and SEM fractography have been carried out to conventional peak-aged, retrogressed, retrogressed and reaged (RRA), and over-aged tempers of the alloy. Retrogression treatment applied to peak-aged tempered alloys resulted in a decrease in hardness and tensile strength, an increase of ductility, and a serration phenomenon in the plastic region. These are primarily due to the dissolution of matrix strengthening δ' precipitates into solid solution upon retrogression treatment. Retrogressed states have been reaged to various under-, peak-, and over-aged tempers. Reaging the retrogressed state to peak-aged temper has resulted in attaining the original peak-aged strength and ductility value. SEM fractography study has been carried out and fracture surfaces exhibited predominantly intergranular fracture in presence of few dimpl...","PeriodicalId":301412,"journal":{"name":"Zeitschrift Fur Metallkunde","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128069681","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Serrated yielding, as a macroscopic manifestation of dynamic strain ageing, occurs under all testing conditions. Negative strain-rate sensitivity of the flow stress is also observed. Temperature rise and strain rate reduction cause the increase of the yield strength and the work-hardening rate, as well as the decrease of elongation – the behavior being typical for the range in which C-type serrations appear. These phenomena are related to the dislocation substructure, in which features characteristic for solute atoms blocking of dislocations and Orowan bypassing are observed.","PeriodicalId":301412,"journal":{"name":"Zeitschrift Fur Metallkunde","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115378051","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The microstructure and grain-refining performance of the Al – 1C master alloy were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and a grain-refining test. The microstructure of the Al – 1C master alloy is composed of α-Al solid solution, Al4C3 particles, and graphite phases. After grain refinement of AZ63B alloy by the Al – 1C master alloy, the mean grain size reached a limit when 2 wt.% Al – C master alloy was added at 800 °C and held for 20 min in the melt before casting. The minimum mean grain size is approximately 48 lm at the one-half radius of the ingot and is about 17 % of that of the unrefined alloy. The Al – 1C master alloy results in better grain refinement than C2Cl6 and MgCO3 carbon-containing refiners.","PeriodicalId":301412,"journal":{"name":"Zeitschrift Fur Metallkunde","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128332563","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The description for this binary system is then combined with the thermodynamic parameters in the Al –Be and Al –Si systems to synthesize a thermodynamic description for the Al –Be –Si ternary system. To verify the reliability of the extrapolated ternary phase diagrams, 11 decisive ternary alloys are prepared by are melting Al, Be and Si pieces and annealing at 530 °C for 8 days. Water-quenched samples are analyzed using differential thermal analysis (DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray (SEM/EDX) techniques. The calculated isopleths at 94 wt.% Al, 88 wt.% Al, 50 at.% Al, and 2 wt.% Be are compared with the experimental data from the present work and the literature. It is shown that the reaction is closely related to the reaction temperature, reaction time, and relative ratio of Cu and Ti2SnC. The reacting products are Cu(Sn) solid solution and TiCx, and the transporting process during interfacial reaction is described. The interfacial reaction products are further confirmed by measuring the hardness across the interface using nanoindentation test. It is shown that the reaction is controlled by the de-intercalation of Sn from Ti2SnC to form Cu(Sn) solid solution and TiCx, and crystallographic relations of [011] TiCx // [010] Ti2SnC and (111) TiCx // (001) Ti2SnC were observed at the interface. The effect of interfacial reaction on the mechanical and electrical properties of the composite is also discussed.","PeriodicalId":301412,"journal":{"name":"Zeitschrift Fur Metallkunde","volume":"382 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132173906","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Properties studied were wear rate and fractional heating. The varying wear response of the samples under different material and test conditions has been substantiated through the features of wear surfaces, subsurface regions, and debris. The role of various microconstituents in the material and their specific features have been correlated with the observed wear behaviour of the alloy in different material and test conditions. The wear rate and fractional heating increased with pressure and speed. The data plots in general comprised initially low slope followed by a higher slope at larger applied pressures. Heat-treated samples performed better than the as-cast one except at the maximum sliding speed; a reverse trend was noted in the latter case. The studq suggests the benefits of heat treatment in terms o...","PeriodicalId":301412,"journal":{"name":"Zeitschrift Fur Metallkunde","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116717418","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
