While the scientific evidence on the minimally invasive principles of approach in Dentistry is presented at an increasing level, the alternatives for restorative treatment in anterior deciduous teeth still face the low availability of reports that associate minimal intervention with the aesthetic needs inherent to the treatment. Thus, this article presents a series of cases in which direct restorations in composite resin, without removing carious tissue using polyvinyl matrices, were treatment alternatives for moderate and severe caries lesions in anterior deciduous teeth. It was observed, therefore, that the use of this artifact helped the rehabilitation of compromised dental elements with speed and satisfactory 50 result, suggesting that this is an appropriate approach for application in Pediatric Dentistry, 51 since it offers resistance, durability, besides providing aesthetics and functionality, it presents lower cost and agility as it eliminates the laboratory phase.","PeriodicalId":30069,"journal":{"name":"RGO Revista Gaucha de Odontologia","volume":"65 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83742074","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, this material is also very susceptible to staining due to pigmentation coming from the diet and habits of the patient. Objectives: To evaluate the staining of two brands of composite resin, one nanoparticle and a nanohybrid type (Filtek Z350XT® and IPS Empress Direct®), in direct contact with the acid pH of beverages. Methods: In total 40 specimens were made, 20 of each type of resin studied. After being inserted into a Teflon matrix and light activated, the samples were removed, stored in containers with 2 ml of artificial saliva and kept in the refrigerator. Every day 20 of these samples were placed in direct contact with 2 ml Gatorade, and the other 20 samples, in 2 ml of wine, each set for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, the acid pH substances were removed, and 2 ml of artificial saliva was again placed in the container. This process was repeated every day for 10 days. Results: The results showed that the nanoparticle resin (Filtek Z350XT) was more susceptible to staining than the nanohybrid type (Empress Direct®) when in contact with the wine. When wine and Gatorade were compared, the solution with higher staining capacity was shown to be wine. Conclusion: The two resins tested were susceptible to staining in a 10-day period. Mottling and more staining was visibly detected after samples were immersed in the solution with the higher pH, and nanoparticulate resin was more susceptible to staining.","PeriodicalId":30069,"journal":{"name":"RGO Revista Gaucha de Odontologia","volume":"30 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72507028","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These patients form a group which may be considered at high risk for the development of oral diseases, according to the kind of pathogen. Among them, is the Williams-Beuren Syndrome, a rare congenital disease with cardiovascular involvement, mental retardation, dysmorphic face, idiopathic hypercalcemia, musculoskeletal problems, dental and growth anomalies. Familial and sporadic cases are thought to result from deletion of genetic material from adjacent genes located on the long arm of chromosome 7. This article reports a clinical case involving a four-year-old boy with Williams-Beuren Syndrome, referred to the clinic of the Specialization Course for Patients with Special Needs, at the São Leopoldo Mandic Dental Research Center, Campinas (SP). As the patient was resistant to dental care, in order to reduce anxiety and increase collaboration in clinical sessions, the Hixizine® medication was administered. For atraumatic restorative treatment and restorations, the following materials were used: Cleanjoy®, Futurabond DC®, Ionofil Plus® Grandioso®, Grandio® and Profluorid®. As result, it was possible to reach a level of excellence using the indicated materials and specific protocols. Based on this work and the lived experience, it can be observed that these patients can receive welcoming dental care in specialized clinics.","PeriodicalId":30069,"journal":{"name":"RGO Revista Gaucha de Odontologia","volume":"12 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78102473","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: Seventy-two human single-rooted teeth were similarly instrumented using R25 Reciproc files (VDW, Munich, Germany) applied in reciprocating mode with a VDW GOLD endo motor (VDW, Munich, Germany). The working length was determined at 1 mm short of the apical foramen. The canals were irrigated with 5 mL of 2.5% sodium hypochlorite during instrumentation. The teeth were divided at random into six groups (n=12). A control group, which was not submitted to the final irrigation protocol, and five experimental groups with different irrigants and agitation techniques: EDTA/File, EDTA/XP, EDTA/Passive Ultrasonic Irrigation (PUI), Distilled Water (DW)/XP, and DW/PUI). Smear layer removal quality scores were assessed in the apical, middle, and cervical thirds of the root canal based on images obtained by scanning electron microscopy. Data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test, followed by two-by-two comparisons with the Dunn test (α=5%). Results: EDTA/File, EDTA/PUI, and EDTA/XP groups demonstrated significantly lower scores than the other groups (P<0.05) in all thirds evaluated. No significant difference was observed between the groups in which distilled water was used and the control group in all thirds evaluated (P> 0.05). Conclusion: The XP-endo Finisher file did not increase the efficiency of EDTA in removal of the smear layer in root canals.","PeriodicalId":30069,"journal":{"name":"RGO Revista Gaucha de Odontologia","volume":"60 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91217180","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: This is a descriptive documentary research study carried out from the analysis of digitalized printed editions of Jornal do Brasil, published between 1891 and 1990, available for consultation on the electronic portal of the collection of periodicals entitled Brazilian Digital Library. For the search, the terminologies ‘cárie dentária’ and ‘cárie dental’ (both meaning dental caries) were used. The platform displays editions from pre-determined time periods. The displays were considered for all journalistic genres, composing or not the main or prominent theme. The data found were analyzed qualitatively. Results: In total, 675 occurrences were registered with the term ‘cárie dentária’ and 33 with the term ‘cárie dental’. The representations of dental caries had multiple and complex variations. The object reconstruction process generated the categories: prevention, public policy and etiology. The topic of food diet significantly crossed the entire time span studied and remained frequently linked to tooth decay, sometimes related to the etiology, sometimes to the prevention of the disease. Conclusion: Jornal do Brasil reflected old knowledge in the field of dentistry, added new scientific knowledge and popularized it for the readership of the written press.","PeriodicalId":30069,"journal":{"name":"RGO Revista Gaucha de Odontologia","volume":"13 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86028020","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through a narrative review, the changes in blood pressure that may occur during outpatient procedures and the measures to be taken were discussed. The available literature was consulted in databases (PubMed, Scielo, Web of Science and Google Scholar), complemented by the analysis of the bibliographic references included and updated until April 2021. The keywords were used: “Anamnesis”, “Arterial Pressure”, “Arterial Hypertension”, “Hypertensive Crisis”, “Risk factors”, “Stroke”, “Subclavian Theft Syndrome” and “Atherosclerosis”. It was concluded that care should be applied to all patients, but mainly to those over 50, hypertensive or not, with hypercholesterolemia, diabetes, anxious and fearful. All vital signs must be monitored, including the pain score. The situations of anxiety, pain and fear are triggers for changes in blood pressure even in normotensive patients as in controlled hypertensive patients. The blood pressure measurement, in the first consultation, must be performed in both arms and repeated annually or whenever there is a change in the patient’s health status. In all other consultations, blood pressure control, as well as the assessment of all vital signs, must be performed before, during, after the procedure and before discharge. In the face of any major change, it is necessary to assess the risk/benefit ratio of the continuity of the procedure, so that risks to patients are avoided or minimized, as well as for the necessary referrals to be made.","PeriodicalId":30069,"journal":{"name":"RGO Revista Gaucha de Odontologia","volume":"28 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87461543","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its etiology is believed to be associated with the epithelial residual tissues retained in the midline during the closure of the first and second brachial arches, in the third and fourth weeks of intra-uterine life. Its clinical characteristics are of a rubbery consistency to palpation, well defined borders, with the absence of skin appendages within their squamous epithelium lined walls. The final diagnosis is confirmed through histopathological examination with stratified squamous epithelium findings in the cystic fluid lumen or keratin. The treatment is usually surgical and without recurrence and the final diagnosis is confirmed through histopathological examination. This paper aims to present a case report of a congenital epidermal cyst in a 5-month-old female patient located in the mouth floor near the sublingual gland duct. The case was treated with excisional biopsy and after follow-up, there was no recurrence.","PeriodicalId":30069,"journal":{"name":"RGO Revista Gaucha de Odontologia","volume":"361 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82640096","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: Sample consisted of 40 patients before and after pubertal peak of growth selected from the archive of the São Leopoldo Mandic Institute and Research Center, Campinas, Brazil. Anatomical structures, reference points, lines and planes were traced, and posteriorly a superimposition was performed using the palatal plane and a line perpendicular to this passage through the most posterior point of the pterygomaxillary fossa as reference. Later, the distance between the two centroid points (before and after the peak of puberty) was measured using the digital caliper, both horizontally and vertically. The palatal plane (x-axis) and a line perpendicular to this passage through the most posterior point of the pterygomaxilary fossa (y-axis) were chosen because they undergo minimal changes during growth. Results: No significant difference on the location of Centroid points on both X and Y axis (p >0.05) were observed between before and after the growth peak cephalometric tracings, showing an average change in positioning of 0.36mm on the X axis and 0.37mm on the Y axis. The event called epithelial-mesenchymal transition is a process in which the epithelial cell loses its epithelial characteristics and acquires properties typical of mesenchymal cells. Studies have already demonstrated that odontogenic keratocysts has expression of tumor markers, but the lack of clarification about its development mechanism and molecular composition makes the therapeutic options remain limited. The aim of this study is to evaluate the expression of epithelial-mesenchymal transition marker proteins in these lesions, correlating the expression of these proteins with clinical aspects of each case. Methods: Patients with odontogenic keratocysts diagnoses, treated by the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of the Erasto Gaertner Hospital, Curitiba, Brazil in the period between 2016 and 2019 were evaluated by immunohistochemical analysis, to assess the expression of epithelial-mesenchymal transition markers (Vimentin, beta-catenin and E-cadherin) by qualitative analysis. Results: Eighteen patients were included, with a mean age of 43 years, and most of them were male. The mandible was more affected than the maxilla. No association between the clinical characteristics of the cysts and the immunohistochemical profile for epithelial-mesenchymal transition proteins was observed. Conclusion: The positivity of E-cadherin and negativity of vimentin demonstrates that its function is preserved. Loss of function of E-cadherin is associated with worse prognosis. The identification of the epithelial-mesenchymal transition process as a prognostic marker for odontogenic cysts and tumors could be an important tool for defining treatment.","PeriodicalId":30069,"journal":{"name":"RGO Revista Gaucha de Odontologia","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82026163","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
