First, it is possible to create arbitrarily large databases for research purposes e.g. of a million or a billion fingerprints at virtually no cost and without legal constraints. Secondly, together with the generated fingerprint images comes additional ground truth information for free such as e.g. the corresponding minutiae template. However, recently it has been shown that existing methods in the literature synthesize images with unrealistic minutiae configurations, usually not visible to the naked eye of an expert. In this paper, we propose an algorithm called Realistic Fingerprint Creator (RFC) for the generation realistic synthetic fingerprint images, which, as a core ingredient, involves a selection procedure how to choose the most `realistic' synthetic fingerprints to build a database. We have performed a test of realness comparing prints synthesized by RFC and real fingerprints, and we have observed that the proposed RFC is the first method which produces artificial fingerprints that pass this test due to their realistic minutiae configuration.","PeriodicalId":299846,"journal":{"name":"2015 9th International Symposium on Image and Signal Processing and Analysis (ISPA)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121244032","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is an important aspect in many speech communication systems and applications, e.g. teleconferencing systems. Therefore, a new method for detecting voiced segments in a multichannel scenario is proposed in this work by exploiting the fundamental frequency tracking through adaptive notch filters previously introduced for interchannel coherence reduction in multichannel acoustic echo cancellation systems. Novel expedients are presented in this paper for obtaining a more accurate tracking and thus for guaranteeing a correct voiced/unvoiced decision. The great advantage of the presented solution is related to the possibility of deriving a self-contained solution for multichannel acoustic echo cancellation where all the involved algorithms are based on the same fundamental frequency estimation. Experimental results prove the effectiveness of the proposed approach in correctly identifying vocal segments and silence and background noise periods.","PeriodicalId":299846,"journal":{"name":"2015 9th International Symposium on Image and Signal Processing and Analysis (ISPA)","volume":"48 10","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114128494","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They were introduced as descriptors of local image texture and their histograms are shown to be well performing texture features. In this paper we introduce two new LBP descriptors, αLBP and its improved variant IαLBP. We evaluate their performance in classification by comparing them with some of the existing LBP descriptors - LBP, ILBP, shift LBP (SLBP) and with one ternary descriptor - LTP. The texture descriptors are evaluated on three datasets - KTH-TIPS2b, UIUC and Virus texture dataset. The novel descriptor outperforms the other descriptors on two datasets, KTH-TIPS2b and Virus, and is tied for first place with ILBP on the UIUC dataset.","PeriodicalId":299846,"journal":{"name":"2015 9th International Symposium on Image and Signal Processing and Analysis (ISPA)","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124726807","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a countermeasure, fingerprint alteration detection aims to automatically discover the occurrence of such attacks by classifying fingerprint images as `normal' or `altered'. Parallel thinning algorithms can remove a set of object points simultaneously, while sequential algorithms traverse the boundary of objects, and consider the actually visited single point for possible removal. Two thinning algorithms are called equivalent if they produce the same result for each input picture. This paper presents the very first pair of equivalent 2D sequential and parallel subiteration-based thinning algorithms. These algorithms can be implemented directly on a conventional sequential computer or on a parallel computing device. Both of them preserve topology for (8, 4) pictures sampled on the square grid.","PeriodicalId":299846,"journal":{"name":"2015 9th International Symposium on Image and Signal Processing and Analysis (ISPA)","volume":"89 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126494554","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This proceeding relies on the Optical Character Recognition (OCR) tool-chain. Generally, an OCR system is based on the important binarization step that separates character strokes from the background document. In this context, one of more robust binarization methods is the recently proposed Hybrid Binarization based on Kmeans (HBK). It handles effectively scanned documents which includes text on simple background. Nevertheless, in Heterogeneous documents, HBK ends up with some issues when extracting foreground text from complex background images. Moreover, HBK assumes to have a dark foreground against a clear background. Otherwise, it fails to render correct binarization colors. In this paper, we propose to improve the HBK method for handling efficiently Heterogeneous documents. Indeed, our proposal employs a layout analysis process that classify document regions into text and image. Image regions are enhanced with Gamma Correction (GC) before HBK binarization. Text regions are treated directly with HBK, keeping its effectiveness on text with homogeneous background. To ensure a robust and independent color rendering in the binarized documents, we control the labeling polarity of text and background through a pixel density-based technique. According to our experiments on LRDE and ICDAR datasets, we demonstrate that I-HBK outperforms HBK when dealing with Heterogeneous documents in both F-measure and OCR accuracy.","PeriodicalId":299846,"journal":{"name":"2015 9th International Symposium on Image and Signal Processing and Analysis (ISPA)","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-09-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129270544","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The descriptor is a weighted histogram of gradient orientations and invariant against scale, in-plane rotation, stretch and skew. To cover the geometrical distortions introduced by an affine image transformation, we create a suiting, affine transformed coordinate system and perform all mathematical calculations in it. Furthermore, we propose to adapt the shape of the described region in order to gain invariance against affine transformations. We use elliptical respectively quadrangular regions instead of circular or quadratic regions. Based on synthetically transformed images we evaluate the matching performance of our descriptor in the case of available perfect knowledge about the image transformation, as well as for employing estimated transformation matrices. The results demonstrate that the proposed descriptor is capable of describing affine transformed regions well, even in case of strong affine image distortions.","PeriodicalId":299846,"journal":{"name":"2015 9th International Symposium on Image and Signal Processing and Analysis (ISPA)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123568644","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The interaction of natural stone-made surfaces with different chemical and physical, climatic controlled, weathering processes, leads to a rapidly increasing deterioration of these monuments. Several different methods are employed in order to conserve and restore these important structures. An effective technique of conservation and restoration is the use of chemical consolidants. One of the main tasks of stone consolidants is a deep penetration into the weakened fabric and the reconstruction of the grain binding strength. The three-dimensional distribution of the consolidants in weathered rock is important for the evaluation of this conservation procedure. Neutron Imaging due to the specific sensitivity of neutrons for hydrogen could be a very useful tool for non-destructive investigation of the chemical inside the restored sample. The method of neutron tomography gives a three dimensional (3D) mapping of the conservation agent in the sample. This paper presents the application of the method of neutron tomography for assessing the consolidation of valuable original samples from historical buildings and monuments in Austria.","PeriodicalId":299846,"journal":{"name":"2015 9th International Symposium on Image and Signal Processing and Analysis (ISPA)","volume":"114 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134099957","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For real images captured by a commercial-off-the-shelf product camera, the error of estimated value with subpixel accuracy of DCT-SPC with curve fitting is lower than that of phase correlation with curve fitting, although DCT-SPC uses only the signs of DCT coefficients, while phase correlation uses the phase term with complex numbers.","PeriodicalId":299846,"journal":{"name":"2015 9th International Symposium on Image and Signal Processing and Analysis (ISPA)","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124148573","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is important for TOA-based ranging measurements, which may be exploited for positioning applications. A sub-space approach is used for the estimation of the multipath time of arrival, and a state-space approach is exploited for tracking the direct path. The developed framework is applied to real LTE signals collected using a portable experimental setup during a car drive in the town of Rapperswil, Switzerland. The pseudoranges derived from the tracking of the DP TOA are then compared to the ranges from the considered LTE base stations calculated using GPS, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed approach.","PeriodicalId":299846,"journal":{"name":"2015 9th International Symposium on Image and Signal Processing and Analysis (ISPA)","volume":"174 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128207697","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
