Their main drawback is their high dimensionality. We propose several methods to reduce the size of the Fisher Vectors by applying different preprocessing steps and dimension reduction techniques to SIFT descriptors. Also, we investigate the effects of PCA and DCT transforms employed on SIFT descriptors and the resulting improvement for an image retrieval application. We show that DCT transformed SIFT descriptors show superiority over other methods and that dimension reduction to 32 dimensions is possible as well as a reduction of number of clusters used for Fisher Vector generation without too much loss in the mean average precision.","PeriodicalId":299846,"journal":{"name":"2015 9th International Symposium on Image and Signal Processing and Analysis (ISPA)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126905134","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The approach is based on continuous-function approximation of binary skeleton lines extracted from thresholded multiscale vesselness images. The continuous centerline functions allow robust computation of tangent vectors, to define normal planes and 3D image cross-sections on those planes. A vessel intensity profile model is next least-squares fitted to the image cross-section along straight lines segments - anchored at centerline and extended toward vessel walls, at a number of directions covering the full angle. Vessel parameters, such as local radius for circular vessels, distances between the centerline and edges for non-circular shapes or intensity profile corresponding to blood velocity distribution, are estimated through the model fitting. Subvoxel accuracy vessel representation, robustness to noise and image inhomogeneity are of primary concern. The algorithm is applied to 3D synthetic and real-life magnetic resonance images. It is demonstrated that the proposed method facilitates automated extraction of geometric vessel-tree models from images and outperforms the well-known Hessian vector approach in terms of accurate estimation of the centerline local direction in noisy images.","PeriodicalId":299846,"journal":{"name":"2015 9th International Symposium on Image and Signal Processing and Analysis (ISPA)","volume":"211 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115940187","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nonetheless, unregulated environments usually impose challenging problems and often particular difficulties arise from real time requirements. In this paper we propose a new energy function to evaluate the spatial relations in a segmentation. It is based on the Normalized Cut but adapted these principles to the usage of videos instead of single images. This makes it possible to get a comparable spatial-accuracy as in state of the art approaches (e.g. Markov Random Fields). However, the optimized hierarchical local minimization process for our energy function is at least two orders of magnitude faster. In combination with an efficient Background Subtraction this results in an accurate real time video segmentation algorithm even for high definition videos.","PeriodicalId":299846,"journal":{"name":"2015 9th International Symposium on Image and Signal Processing and Analysis (ISPA)","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117142304","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite the great importance of having semi-automatic segmentation methods in this field, the process of image segmentation is still based on several operator-dependent steps which make large-scale segmentation a non trivial and time consuming task. In this work we present a semi-automatic segmentation method to reconstruct vascular structures from three-dimensional medical images. We start from the minimization of the Region Scalable Fitting Energy using the Split-Bregman method and we modify the resulting algorithm adding a connected component extraction of the solution starting from a point that identifies the vascular structure of interest. In this way, we add a constraint to the algorithm focusing it only on the vascular structure we want to reconstruct and avoiding the attachment with the nearby objects. Finally, we describe a strategy to minimize the number of involved parameters in order to limit the user effort. The results obtained on two different images (a Magnetic Resonance and a Computed Tomography) demonstrate that our method outperforms the original method in segmenting the vascular region of interest without the inclusion of nearby objects in the result.","PeriodicalId":299846,"journal":{"name":"2015 9th International Symposium on Image and Signal Processing and Analysis (ISPA)","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124391581","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The problem is modeled by assuming that the unwanted reflection is an achromatic or monochromatic image that combines additively with the real transmitted image of the object of interest. In the absence of information about the mixing coefficients, we adopted a blind source separation technique that exploits the dependence of the three color channels of the original image, and the independence of the reflected image. In particular, these constraints are forced on the image gradients rather than on the intensity images. The algorithm is constituted of a step for the estimation, via independent component analysis of the model parameters, followed by a regularization technique to estimate the component images. The algorithm is very fast and provides promising results.","PeriodicalId":299846,"journal":{"name":"2015 9th International Symposium on Image and Signal Processing and Analysis (ISPA)","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124467309","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Because micro-emboli are defined as High Intensity Transient Signals (HITS), their detection require the estimation of the blood flow background signal; i.e, the reference from which HITS have to be detected. In this paper, we propose an original micro-emboli detection procedure composed of two steps. Firstly, the background noise is isolated from the blood flow time-frequency image thanks to the log-likelihood segmentation method. Secondly, a HITS detection threshold is calculated from a blood flow statistic using the spectral kurtosis approach. Our procedure is used on the transcranial Doppler data from two patients and the results show that the mean percentage error of the velocity envelope estimation is reduced from 5% to 3% and the micro-emboli detection probability is 84% while only 49 artifacts are detected.","PeriodicalId":299846,"journal":{"name":"2015 9th International Symposium on Image and Signal Processing and Analysis (ISPA)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124379901","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
