Combining molecular engineering and knowledge of materials sciences leads to synthesis of attractive and efficient classes of molecules that can be applied in a wide range of applications such as optoelectronic, photonic devices. For applications in nonlinear optical field, it is established that highly conjugated molecules with push-pull character leads to large nonlinearities. A number of family molecules such carbazole, azulene and so on have been synthesized in this way. We discuss in the present work cubic nonlinear optical properties of three phenylazo-azulene derivatives namely 4-hydroxylphenylazo-1-azulene, 4-aminophenylazo-1-guaiazulene and 4-acetylaminophenylazo-1-azulene. In these structures, azulene fragment acts as donor group, azo and phenyl moieties constitute a pi-conjugated bridge and acceptor character is given by different groups. The compounds were dissolved in tetrahydrofuran (THF) and their third order nonlinear optical activity investigated and determined through degenerate four wave mixing (DFWM) technique working at 532 nm wavelength in picosecond regime. Calculated susceptibility chi(3) values are compared to those of others known NLO materials reported in literature.","PeriodicalId":298995,"journal":{"name":"2008 2nd ICTON Mediterranean Winter","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132432402","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to achieve the switching functions in SOA-based optical switches, such as Symmetric Mach-Zehnder (SMZ), the effect of the input signal on the total gain response of the SOA is investigated. The theoretical operation principle is demonstrated using a segmentation model that employs the complete rate equation with third order gain coefficients. Results obtained show the input boundaries and requirements in which the SOA can be efficiently used as an amplifier and as a switch.","PeriodicalId":298995,"journal":{"name":"2008 2nd ICTON Mediterranean Winter","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125370725","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The existing protection schemes which rely heavily on fault detection due to the use of network monitoring performed by the use of optoelectronic conversion at the switching nodes, is not sufficient to provide security assurance for all optical networks which lack the massive use of optoelectronic monitoring and require timely protection from malicious sabotage as well as inadvertent faults. In order to increase the security of future networks, them will need to use reactive mechanisms and self-organize through multipath routing (MPR) to protect themselves from potential failures caused by malicious new attacks and ordinary reliability problems. If we make the analogy to the human immunization systempsilas primary defense mechanism, MPR will act as the primary defense mechanism reacting timely to network problems and evolving based on network information. In this paper we are proposing the use MPR as an instinct immediate network reaction to failures and attacks in transparent networks; after the nodes transmit the data and causes of failure are classified, better self organized decisions can be used based on changing routing output priorities to reach destination.","PeriodicalId":298995,"journal":{"name":"2008 2nd ICTON Mediterranean Winter","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132520227","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Further, thermal analysis shows that carbon nanotubes increase the glass transition temperature Tg and nucleate PVA crystallization. The observed results from Raman spectra recorded with 785 nm laser excitation were correlated to those obtained by infra-red absorption. These indicate that the SDS is adsorbed on the NTC surface which shows clearly the non covalent functionalization of the carbon nanotubes.","PeriodicalId":298995,"journal":{"name":"2008 2nd ICTON Mediterranean Winter","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114535806","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, in order to achieve the NGPON goals, the previously PON requirements, namely the passive field implementation, the compliance with the IEEE and ITU-T wavelength allocation plans, and the colourless nature of the ONUs, need to be rethought. With those requirements in mind, Raman amplification for both signal amplification and the use of the remaining power for remote pumping was proposed. Simulations were made in order to test its validity and to judge upon the compatibility with wavelength allocation plans of previously deployed standards, in order to see if this solution is fit for short term upgrade or for satisfying longer term demands.","PeriodicalId":298995,"journal":{"name":"2008 2nd ICTON Mediterranean Winter","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122043061","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
