Nine different potato genotypes with two checks i.e. Desiree and Jumli Local were tested on Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). Each treatment was replicated four times. Compost was used at the rate of 20 tons per hectare. There was no use of chemical fertilizer. Well sprouted tubers of 25-50 g were planted with 60cm x 25cm spacing. The effects of different genotypes were recorded for both vegetative as well as yield parameters. Tested genotypes differed significantly for vegetative (emergence percentage at 30 days after planting & 45 days after planting, uniformity, ground coverage, plant height, number of main stems) as well as yield parameters (total number of tubers and tuber yield per ha). The highest tuber yield (20.9 t/ha) was harvested from CIP 392797.22. Result of consecutive years showed that potato genotype CIP 392797.22 is suitable for cultivation in high hills of Karnali province for food as well as nutritional security.","PeriodicalId":298912,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Agricultural and Horticultural Research","volume":"105 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133403121","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Field experiment were conducted at National Cereals Research Institute, Uyo Out-Station in 2011 and 2012 to investigate the response of egusi melon (Colocynthis citrullus) to different rates of OBRA (1,2,3,4, 5 and 6 t/ha) and 200kg/haNPK as recommended rate of inorganic fertilizer for egusi in the study area. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design, replicated three times. Data collected on growth and yield of egusi-melon were subjected to analysis of variance. Significant means were compared using least significant difference at 5% probability level. Application of 6 t/ha OBRA produced significant seed yield of 243.40 and 253.10 kg/ha in 2011 and 2012. Treatment of 200kg/ha NPK produced seed yield of 193.60 and 201.75 kg/ha respectively. The control (no soil amendment) produced the least seed yield of 125.33 and 128.11 kg/ha in 2011 and 2012, respectively. Comparing with recommended rate of NPK (200kg/ha), treatment of 6t/ha OBRA had seed yield of 21 and 20% greater than the recommended rate of NPK. Soil chemical properties at harvest indicated high soil pH (7.80 and 7.90) and organic matter (3.50 and 3.55%) respectively compared with low soil pH (5.00 and 4.90) and organic matter (2.08 and 20.1%) observed in NPK treatment. The study therefore concluded that application of 4t/h OBRA could be cheap alternative means of sustainable production of egusi melon in acid coastal plain soils of Nigeria.","PeriodicalId":298912,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Agricultural and Horticultural Research","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132699048","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Don, Combretum bracteatum Herb. Madr. ex Wall and Combretum indicum (L.) Defillips and the soil characteristics of their habitats. Plants samples were obtained within University of Uyo Main Campus, Use Offot village in Uyo Local Government Area and Ifiayong Usuk Village in Uruan L.G.A. of Akwa Ibom State. Soil samples were obtained around the base of the studied plants before collection. Plants' morphological characters were extensively described and the soil samples analyzed using standard methods. The results revealed that these plants thrive on slightly acidic soils (6.31±0.07 to 6.75±0.05). Soils supporting Callichila stenosepala recorded the highest electrical conductivity (18.2±4.10), organic carbon (5.28±0.80), total nitrogen (4.86±0.52), calcium (164.00±10.20), magnesium (74.36±6.21) and exchange acidity (2.88±0.07) values, soils supporting Clerodendrum splendens recorded the highest pH (6.75±0.05), bulk density (1.88±0.004), phosphorus (2.08±0.003), sodium (18.40±4.09), potassium (32.18±7.02) and clay (34.00±6.10). Also, Combretum indicum was supported by soils having higher sand (62.00±7.10) and silt (23.00±4.30) contents while Combretum bracteatum occurred on soils with lower values of base cations, basic nutrient elements and soil physical properties. In conclusion, there are plants with potential horticultural values found within the study area and there are significant differences in the soil properties at the locations in which they are found. A better ecological investigation is needed in order to provide useful insights needed for the adoption, management, mass production, and better utilization of these potential horticultural plants within the study area.","PeriodicalId":298912,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Agricultural and Horticultural Research","volume":"100 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131459656","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We investigated the significance of Solanum melongena pollen in the diet of wild bees found in agroecosystems by examining pollen on the bees using a pollen load analysis and a nutritive analysis. We selected five agricultural sites that cultivate S. melongena near Pune, Maharashtra, India. At each site, over a two-year period, we sampled the wild bees that visited mature flowers. We sampled pollen from mature flowers and also from the bodies of the bee specimens. The pollen grains from the bees were observed under a light microscope and a scanning electron microscope. They were counted using a Neubauer chamber and the pollen probability index for each bee species was calculated. The nutritive value of S. melongena pollen was estimated by extracting and characterising their proteins using liquid chromatography mass-spectrometry. Protein peptides sequences were extracted from the NCBI protein database to examine their essential amino acids. We collected 324 bees representing 11 species in three families involved in S. melongena pollination. Apis florea and A. cerana were the most abundant bees that visited S. melongena flowers. Pollen load size is highly variable ranging between few thousand to 134146 pollen grains per bee. However, the pollen probability index indicated a high degree of specificity to S. melongena pollen. S. melongena has high pollen protein content and a total of 10 different proteins were identified that are important for plant cell activities as well as the nourishment of pollinators. Further proteomic characterization of the indicated that nearly half the essential amino acids played and nutrient role in the bees. This study highlights that nutrititive composition of S. melongena pollen and highlights its potential to play a significant role in wild bee diets.","PeriodicalId":298912,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Agricultural and Horticultural Research","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127167981","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The effects of six nitrogen doses (0, 70, 80, 90, 115, 130 kg N/ha) were evaluated in two cauliflower varieties (Snow Mystique and Khumal Jyapu) at the Institute of Agriculture and Animal Science, Lamjung Campus from September 2018 to January 2019. This experiment was carried out in a two factorial Completely Randomized Design with twelve treatments and five replications. FYM (25 t/ha), full dose of phosphorus (80 kg/ha) and potassium (60 kg/ha), and half dose of nitrogen were applied as a basal dose and the remaining half dose of nitrogen was applied in two equal split doses at 30 DAT and 60 DAT. The application of 130 kg N/ha gave superior results in plant height (26.32 cm), plant spread (4103 cm2), leaf area (264 cm2), stem diameter (1.96 cm), number of leaves (20.70), root length (26.26 cm), girth of curd (49.46cm) and adjusted yield (21.78 ton/ha). Similarly, the performance of the Snow Mystique variety was significantly superior as compared to Khumal Jypau in terms of growth and yield. Therefore, the combination of an optimum level of nitrogen (130 kg N/ha) and hybrid variety (Snow Mystique) could be recommended for the commercial production of cauliflower.","PeriodicalId":298912,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Agricultural and Horticultural Research","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114530926","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The treatments used include; soaking in 30% H2SO4, vernalization and soaking in water (hydotreatment). Soil was filled in 160 polyethene bags of 10 kg each. Five polyethene bags were used for each replicate. With this arrangement, 16 replicates were gotten for the plant according to the treatment and duration placement. Parameters such as germination percentage, plant height, and stem girth as well as leaf area were collected and analyzed using mean, variance, standard deviation, variance of the mean, standard error and confidence limit. The results of the analysis showed that the various treatments and the duration significance on percentage germination and growth parameters of Zea mays seeds. Data presented in Tables 1-14 showed the various treatments and the duration significance on percentage germination of Zea mays seeds. The result showed that the treatment of seeds before cultivation increased the percentage germination in Zea mays when compared with the control replicate. The results revealed the height readings of different treatment sources and treatment durations and how significantly it affected the height of Zea mays. It was also observed that leaf Area and stem girth significantly increased in different treatment methods and durations as seen in treatment of Zea mays. From this research, it was observed that seed treatment resulted in early germination and high growth strength; hence seed treatment with any of the treatments will suffice in giving a better seed performance but for the sake of availability and accessibility of the treatments, hydro-treatment is most recommended.","PeriodicalId":298912,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Agricultural and Horticultural Research","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129018541","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Quality okra is essential for consumption and maximizing profits for okra producers and marketers. However, okra is perishable and limited in supply during the dry seasons. The stakeholders such as farmers, traders and consumers processed okra fruits to make them available all year round. Therefore, the objective of the study is to explore the effect of processing on nutritional value and microbial characteristics of okra fruits. The study involved both field survey and laboratory work among five okra producing communities within Sunyani Municipality Ghana, namely; Abesim, Atronie, Benu Nkwanta, Ayakomasu and Wawasua. Stratified sampling technique was used to select 50 farmers while purposive sampling technique was used to select 35 traders and 25 consumers, making a total of one hundred and ten respondents. Questionnaires were instruments used for the survey.  Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with four treatments was used and blocked five times to obtain data for laboratory analyses. Results from the study indicated that, variety of okra fruits most cultivated, sold and consumed was Asutem, July to September were identified to be the months of bumper harvest for farmers, declined in prices of okra fruits for traders and low purchasing prices of okra fruits for consumers. The processing methods identified for processing okra fruits were slicing, pounding/ milling and roasting. Nutritional analyses on techniques used for processing okra fruits in the study area, revealed that, fiber, ash and calcium contents (18.47 %, 9.7 % and 0.43 %) were higher in sliced okra fruits and carbohydrate content (48.34 %) was higher in roasted okra fruits. Microbial contamination analyses on techniques used for processing okra fruits, showed that, there were lower (1.24, 0.83, 1.73 and 0.66 log10 CFU/g of Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus niger, Penicillium digitatum and Penicillium spp, respectively) in roasted okra fruits.","PeriodicalId":298912,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Agricultural and Horticultural Research","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116297199","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Seed potatoes were planted in 9 different plant dates that were December 1, December 15, January 1, January 15, February 1, February 15, March 1, March 15 and April 1. The experiment was laid out in Completely Randomized Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The variety used for experiment was Janakdev. The plot size for the experiment for each treatment was 4.5m2 with spacing of 75 cm x 25 cm. Data were collected on vegetative characteristics, tuber yield parameters, red ant damage scoring (1-5 scale), red ant incidence (%) in tuber and red ant infested yield (t/ha). Potatoes planted at first January produced highest tuber yield and minimum red ants infestation. Early planting delayed emergence but had maximum ground coverage. In both the years tuber was highest (19.86 t/ha and 25.48 t/ha respectively in 2020 and 2021) with seed tuber planted on January 1. Tuber yield was less both in early and late planted potatoes. Along with higher tuber yield potatoes planted on January 1 had the lowest red ant damaged score, red ant incidence (%) and less red ant infested potato tuber yield (t/ha) in both the years. It is recommended that for maximum tuber yield and minimum red ants infestation seed potatoes should be planted during first week of January in Jaubari area and similar conditions in the hills of Nepal.","PeriodicalId":298912,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Agricultural and Horticultural Research","volume":"23 4","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131776876","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

B @ 0.4% + Zn @ 0.2% + Ca @ 1% in order to determine the best foliar spray of growth hormones and plant nutrients for the increased fruit set and yield of mandarin. The foliar sprays were applied five times, started from full-bloom until late September (pre-harvest stage). The experiments were conducted in Dhankuta, Nepal during 2019 and 2020. The highest bloom fruit set of 6.1% was recorded at the foliar application of GA3 20ppm + NAA @ 50ppm, compared to the control treatment of 4.6%.    Likewise, there were significant effects of plant growth regulations and micro-nutrients applications on the fruit drops across the fruit growing periods. The foliar application of GA3 + 2,4-D + micronutrients resulted in the lowest fruit drop during the months of June (63.9%), July (65.9%), and September (20.8%), as opposed to the control treatment's fruit drops of 77.6, 80.4, and 41.5%. In addition, the fruit drops occurred at the foliar sprays of GA3 + 2,4-D were statistically at par with the GA3 + 2,4-D + micro-nutrients. Also, the GA3 + 2,4-D + micronutrient spray treatment had the largest number of fruits (995 nos.) and total fruit weight (64.2 kg) per tree, which were considerably higher than the control by 201.5 and 175.5%, respectively.
