Literature suggests that technology can help to prevent this isolation. The present work addresses an approach to participate in society by sharing knowledge that is cherished. We propose the cooking recipe exchange application PrecRec for older adults to make them feel precious and valued. PrecRec has been developed and evaluated in an iterative process with eleven older adults. The results show that a broad perspective has to be taken into account when designing such systems.","PeriodicalId":298769,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Mensch und Computer 2020","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122722793","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we present a VR application which supports experiencing and learning basic steps in programming the ENIAC in a virtual environment. The ENIAC is one of the world's first general-purpose programmable electronic computers which occupied a 40 x 60 foot room, weighed 30 tons, and was programmed using knobs, switches, and cables. Our implemented VR application has twofold goals. On the one hand it enables to re-experience an early computer and understand its historical context and architecture. On the other hand it demos how to program a computer in a completely different \"language\" (i.e., knobs and switches) by guiding the user step-by-step through a predefined configuration of the ENIAC.","PeriodicalId":298769,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Mensch und Computer 2020","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125693820","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Common systems focus on using motion sensors or cameras, which have only a limited viewing angle and therefore monitoring gaps can easily occur within a room. Humans produce carbon dioxide (CO2) through their respiration, which is distributed in rooms. As a result, if one (or more) persons are in a room, a significant increase in CO2 concentration in the room can be noted. With this work we investigate an approach to detect the presence or absence of people indoors by monitoring the CO2 concentration in the ambient air.","PeriodicalId":298769,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Mensch und Computer 2020","volume":"128 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123130179","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the present work, data of two studies (total N = 2525) was used to examine factors of online donation. An effect of website design perceptions (in terms of content, usability, and aesthetics) on willingness to donate was postulated. Furthermore, research questions about demographic aspects such as age and gender as well as trust in the organization were posed. In both studies, fully-functional health-related websites were evaluated (in sum 33 websites). For statistical analysis, logistic regressions were performed. The results showed different relevance of predictors of donation in different scenarios of donation. For the donation of one's own money, the perceived content and trust in the organization showed the greatest influence. When donating other people's money, the aesthetics of the website was the most important factor for the willingness to donate. Thus, the design of the website, but also of trust in the organization are highly relevant. The differences between the two scenarios of online donation might be explained by the increased relevance of the decision, which results from donating one's own money, and according cognitive processes. Nevertheless, further research should examine influences of additional variables and establishing implications for successful digital donation generation in the healthcare sector.","PeriodicalId":298769,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Mensch und Computer 2020","volume":"93 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121097575","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although efforts have already been made to enrich and improve these interaction tools with additional information and visualizations, only rather basic variants of sliders are commonly used in online shops or databases. However, these sliders often provide users only with very limited information about underlying data. We describe and evaluate three different slider designs, which enrich the tools with information in various ways, enabling users to efficiently explore the space of available items and to choose items in an informed manner. In one of the described slider designs we propose a new approach that integrates item recommendations directly into the slider, enabling users to see suitable items within the selection tool. In two user studies we show that these enhancements, both visualizations and recommendations, are powerful methods to directly support users in their searches.","PeriodicalId":298769,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Mensch und Computer 2020","volume":"112 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124831194","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our recurrent neural model performs at least as good as humans, who have problems with this task, even native speakers, who profit from the relevant linguistic skills. We perform ablation experiments on the features used by our model and show that fundamental frequency variation is the single most relevant feature class. Therefore, we conclude that future systems can detect whether they are addressed based only on speech prosody which does not (or only to a very limited extent) reveal the content of conversations not intended for the system.","PeriodicalId":298769,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Mensch und Computer 2020","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123432713","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Visual indicators of users' perspectives can reduce the required verbal communication and therefore increase the efficiency of work within remote teams. In this paper we compare three distinct types of visual indicators regarding task completion time, precision and error rate. These perspective conveying methods include a 3D cone indicating the boundaries of a user's field of view, highlighting the object a user is looking at, and displaying a direct video mirror of the user's view port. In an experiment these methods were used to transmit information from one person to another, that would otherwise be inaccessible. In a virtual warehouse scenario, participants moved visually obstructed boxes to a target area with a crane, while an experiment conductor provided visual cues as to where these boxes are, solely by looking at them. The results indicate that object highlighting is significantly inferior regarding precision and error rate, while the video mirror proved to be the most reliable. The view cone was however perceived as the method with the highest degree of social presence.","PeriodicalId":298769,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Mensch und Computer 2020","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124627922","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, overlaying virtual content on real-world objects can cause occlusion. Especially for learning use cases, the occlusion might result in missing real-world information important for learning gain. Therefore, it is important to understand how virtual content should be positioned relative to the related real-world information without negatively affecting the learning experience. Thus, we conducted a study with 12 participants using AR glasses to investigate the position of virtual content using a vocabulary learning task. Participants learned foreign words shown in the surrounding while viewing translations using AR glasses as an overlay, on the right or below the foreign word. We found that showing virtual translations on top of foreign words significantly decreases comprehension and increase users' task load. Insights from our study inform the design of applications for AR glasses supporting vocabulary learning.","PeriodicalId":298769,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Mensch und Computer 2020","volume":"118 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123237227","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such an assessment of potential relevance can be based on meta-information. For example, a scientific article's visual elements and layout might make it distinguishable from pseudo- or unscientific texts. In order to investigate which visual properties let a text appear scientific we conducted an experiment. Results indicate that mathematical formulas, diagrams or tables in a two-column layout generate a scientific impression. Properties that might not conform to typical scientific conventions, e.g., photos in combination with a one-column layout, are perceived as less scientific by the majority of respondents.","PeriodicalId":298769,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Mensch und Computer 2020","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132355583","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On top of that, the increasing interest in incorporating user feedback into product development keeps pushing the limit of resources that UX research teams can allocate. Is this seemingly unstoppable appetite for user insights sustainable? How can UX researchers properly support their product teams' growing needs? We argue that, to be successful at scaling up Lean UX research, product teams need to become active actors in the process, while researchers need to use their expertise to provide guidance and training as required. As an example of this approach, we describe our experience organizing \"Developer Day\", a yearly event aimed at scaling up the Lean UX research practices of Microsoft's Developer Division. Developer Day has also extended the reach of the division's UX Research team for impacting decisions about the company's software developer tools and services.","PeriodicalId":298769,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Mensch und Computer 2020","volume":"12 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123644022","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
