METHODS: The aim of this study is to examine differences in clinical symptoms and psychological distress comparing two groups of university students seeking psychological intervention at a University Psychological Counselling Center before the COVID-19 pandemic period and during the pandemic. A sample of 187 students was distributed into two groups: Pre-COVID-19 pandemic (N.=115) and COVID-19 pandemic (N.=72). The Personality Inventory-Brief Form for DSM-5 was used to measure personality traits; the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised was used to assess clinical symptoms and the Outcome Questionnaire-45 explored important psychological distress.RESULTS: Findings highlighted higher levels of clinical symptoms in COVID-19 pandemic students than in pre-pandemic ones. Conversely, the two groups did not differ in psychological distress. Data seems to confirm that the pandemic period had a negative impact on the mental health of university students seeking psychological help.CONCLUSIONS: Findings indicate the need to monitor the clinical symptomatology of university students to prevent long-term psychopathology influencing academic functioning.","PeriodicalId":29829,"journal":{"name":"Minerva Psychiatry","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135220299","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Even though restrictive measures such as mandatory lockdown were not applied in Uruguay, mental health could be affected. Moreover, sociodemographic and lifestyle factors could modulate this impact. We aimed to evaluate the impact of the pandemic on depressive and anxiety symptoms among Uruguayan people and examine the associated factors.METHODS: This study was conducted in a non-probabilistic sample of 1051 adults (aged ≥18 years) across Uruguay. Depressive (Beck Depression Inventory-II) and anxiety (State-Trait Anxiety Inventory) symptoms were assessed along with isolation conditions, sociodemographic factors, and lifestyle behaviors. Linear models were adjusted to analyze the data.RESULTS: Participants in our sample reported mild-to-moderate depressive symptoms and severe anxiety symptoms. Those who entered total isolation reported the highest levels of symptomatology. Also, as days of isolation increased, symptoms increased. Finally, sex, socioeconomic status, age, physical activity, sleeping routines, exposure to light and outdoor activities were shown to influence mental health.CONCLUSIONS: This study illustrates that the COVID-19 outbreak impacts mental health even in a country with mild lockdown. Our results highlight the importance of considering sociodemographic and lifestyle factors when developing clinical intervention programs to mitigate the current crisis’s effects.","PeriodicalId":29829,"journal":{"name":"Minerva Psychiatry","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136170510","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Novice and intermediate groups underwent a 12-week RT program for the whole-body (eight exercises, three sets, 8-12 repetitions, three alternate days per week). Measurements of cognitive performance (Stroop Test, Trail making Test A and B, letter and category verbal fluency test, Montreal Cognitive Assessment Test) were performed before and after the experimental period. ANCOVA was used for the comparison between groups over time.RESULTS: Improvement in the scores of almost all tests was observed in both novice and intermediate groups after RT (P<0.05), while the control group presented worse MoCA and Stroop Test scores after intervention (P<0.05). Thus, both exercise groups showed significantly different scores from the control group (P<0.05). Interestingly, a larger effect size was found for the intermediate group (ES=0.25-0.66) than for the novice group (ES = 0.16-0.35).CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that cumulative effect seems to exist, with more experienced individuals presenting more significant improvements.","PeriodicalId":29829,"journal":{"name":"Minerva Psychiatry","volume":"82 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136170512","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
