In our department of Urology, the biomedical engineering group started basic research concerning selective stimulation and blocking of sacral nerves in cooperation with the Biomedical Engineering Division, University of Twente. The goal of the research is to use these methods for the improvement of the sacral root implants that are actually used. The project consists of a model study, experiments in animals and testing in patients having intradural implants. Preliminary results show a difference in the diameter of motor fibers towards the bladder and urethra. Therefore, selective stimulation of the bladder or urethral sphincter is theoretically possible.","PeriodicalId":297811,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society Volume 13: 1991","volume":"351 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133134585","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One is a specialpurpose file manager, and the other is a general-purpose screen reader, in which the user merely points to any spot on the touch-pad and hears the screen contents at the corresponding point enunciated. Both systems offer simplicity of operation and low cost. Factors used in the design of the systems are discussed, along with hardware and software features. Results of user experience and the system's transition to an available product are described.","PeriodicalId":297811,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society Volume 13: 1991","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115271167","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In continuation of our work to develop membrane bound enzyme sensors, enzymes were chemically bonded on the modified Polysulfone matrix via a spacer, e.g. glutaraldehyde. 2-amino ethyl polysulfone vias derived from the parent polymer via acylation, oxime formation followed by reduction. a amalyse was covalently bound to the modified polymer in suspension with glutaraldehyde. Activity of the immobilised enzyme was measured and found to be significant. Immobilization of other enzymes by similar route and estimation of their activity/stability are in progress.","PeriodicalId":297811,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society Volume 13: 1991","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124419303","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The methods utilizes a stored image of the face taken at the time of the first radiograph. Prior to exposure of a second radiograph the subject views a realtime subtraction image of the stored reference image and the current position of the face. The subject is aligned when the monitor has a neutral gray appearance. Validation studies indicate that this method can be used in anterior teeth with a mean angular descrepancy of 0.3 1 degrees. When these radiographs are used to produce subtraction images lesions may be detected with 93% sensitivity.","PeriodicalId":297811,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society Volume 13: 1991","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116776144","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
