These electronic devices have increased capabilities in processing speed, memory, communication and networking [21][22]. Such sensor networks have a vast amount of applications including environmental monitoring, military, ecology, agriculture, inventory control, robotics and health care. This paper discusses the issues and challenges in the use of this new and very promising technology in the protection and monitoring of the critical and essential infrastructures of pipelines carrying oil, gas, water, and other important resources. The paper presents an architectural model that can be used to provide this monitoring and control functions. The model includes an overview of networking and routing protocols that can be used to provide the necessary communications. In addition, the paper provides discussions and recommendations concerning network reliability and the use of different wireless sensor technologies and protocols.","PeriodicalId":296096,"journal":{"name":"2007 Wireless Telecommunications Symposium","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-04-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124914364","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The receiver is an optimized MAP Turbo processor that exploits log likelihood ratio (LLR) information from previously failed transmissions. We show that this configuration achieves very high gains compared to a standard ARQ system by virtue of two co-operative mechanisms: First, by using (log likelihood ratios) LLR from previous decoding trials to improving the expectation maximization (EM) based algorithm channel tracking and LLR calculation during retransmissions and second by combining together the extrinsic detector LLR from previous reception attempts with the newly generated one from the retransmissions of a previously failed packet.","PeriodicalId":296096,"journal":{"name":"2007 Wireless Telecommunications Symposium","volume":"78 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-04-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121687469","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper we develop the theory behind new efficient structures for the implementation of loop filters within FPGAs (field programmable gate arrays) using fixed-point arithmetic. The theory is then investigated via a case study, in which we present FPGA hardware mapping results which show that employing the proposed method results in a decrease of more than 70% in the logic gate count needed as compared to the conventional implementation.","PeriodicalId":296096,"journal":{"name":"2007 Wireless Telecommunications Symposium","volume":"75 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-04-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134018706","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unfortunately, this only accounts for multipath arrival times and gains, not arrival angles. In this paper, it is shown that Spencer's extension of the channel model, which also accounts for arrival angles, can be accommodated in the cluster point process framework. Using this framework, closed-form expressions are derived for several quantities, including the power delay-angle profile and detectable-path delay-angle profile.","PeriodicalId":296096,"journal":{"name":"2007 Wireless Telecommunications Symposium","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-04-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132008946","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While it has been shown that using adaptive modulation increases the capacity of the wireless system, most MA algorithms may not be energy efficient when many mobile users are far from the base station because adaptive modulation decisions are left to the end of the algorithm after subcarrier allocation decisions have been already made. The low complexity channel allocation algorithm presented in this paper shows that a better use of adaptive modulation can result in better energy efficiency for both the base station and mobile users, while offering comparative performance with existing solutions.","PeriodicalId":296096,"journal":{"name":"2007 Wireless Telecommunications Symposium","volume":"197 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-04-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123239174","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
