Research has established that MHL is poor among religious leaders (RLs) who have been established to be the first point of call for mental health related needs in the society. Hence, this study assessed the effect of physical educational interventions on the domains of MHL among RLs in Ogun State, Nigeria. Quasi experimental research design was utilized for this study. Three Local Government Areas (LGAs) were selected through balloting. A sample of 85 religious leaders were purposively selected using predefined selection criteria. The interventions were implemented for six weeks. A validated structured questionnaire was used for data collection. Data on MHL domains (knowledge, perception and attitude) were collected at baseline, immediate post-intervention and at 12th week follow-up. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics at 5% level of significance. At baseline, there was no significant difference in knowledge (EG=9.15±8.42, CG=13.42±10.43, p=0.100), perception (EG=27.29±9.12, CG=30.84±9.80, p=0.221) and attitude (EG=16.19±6.64, CG=18.09±10.46, p=0.42); At immediate post-intervention, EG scored significantly higher than CG in knowledge (EG=25.31±4.76, CG=13.93±10.90, p=0.00), perception (EG=38.29±5.48, CG=30.52±9.94, p=0.00), attitude (EG=26.25±10.06, CG=17.55±9.54, p=0.00). Similarly, at 12th week follow-up, EG scored significantly higher than CG for knowledge (EG=23.62±6.90, CG=10.52±9.60, p=0.00), perception (EG=37.68±6.66, CG=29.36±9.25, p=0.00), attitude (EG=23.62±6.90, CG=10.52±9.60, p=0.00). Physical intervention was effective in improving MHL. It was recommended among others that religious leaders should be included as stakeholders in mental health technical working groups across the different tiers of Nigeria health system where such applies.","PeriodicalId":295840,"journal":{"name":"nternational Journal of Public Health Pharmacy and Pharmacology","volume":"1550 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128066088","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study evaluated the effect of a health education intervention on diarrhea prevention practices among mothers with children under the age of five in Aba, Abia State, Nigeria. This study employed a quasi-experimental research design. From population of 350 under-5 mothers in the Local government, a sample size of 60 was determined using power formula. Systematic sampling was used to select the mothers. The health education intervention involved a control and experimental group. The duration of program was one hour weekly didactic intervention for six weeks. A structured validated questionnaire was used to collect data at baseline, at 6th and 12th week post intervention. The Cronbach’s alpha reliability coefficients for the constructs ranged from 0.75 to 0.87. The mother’s prevention practices were measured on a 27-point rating scale. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics at α = 0.05 level of significance.Findings showed that between the baseline and the post-immediate there was a significant difference in the mean prevention score in the experimental group (from 19.03±5.91 to 22.20±3.67 at p< 0.05. However, there was no significant difference (p >0.05) in the mean prevention score of the control group (from20.13 ± 4.89 to 20.8 ± 3.41). In conclusion, the health education intervention was effective increasing the mother’s prevention and home management practices of diarrhea. It is recommended that matrons and nurses in charge of antenatal and postnatal clinics should teach mothers about prevention andhome management of diarrhea.","PeriodicalId":295840,"journal":{"name":"nternational Journal of Public Health Pharmacy and Pharmacology","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115524438","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite the World Health Organization (WHO) recommendation of the combination treatment regimen of oral rehydration salts (ORS) and zinc supplements for the management of this disease, it effectiveness in treating and preventing the reoccurrence of diarrhoea among the under-five children remains a serious concern. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness of WHO combination treatment regimen in the management of diarrhoea amongst under-five children attending Primary Health Care (PHC) centres in Oyo State. The study adopted quasi-experimental of one group Pretest-posttest design. Purposive sampling technique was used to recruit a total of 60 eligible participants on admission. The effectiveness of the combination treatment regimen was assessed based on the recovery rate of the participants at 24 hours, 2 weeks and 4 weeks post intervention using a standardized instrument of WHO observational check-list for assessing diarrhoeaic under-five children. Data analysis was done using both descriptive and inferential statistics. However, on admission (baseline), majority 52(86.7%) of the participants had moderate diarrhoea. After administering WHO-ORS plus Zinc supplements, 24 hours later, majority 51(85.0%) of the participants had no diarrhoea, two (2) weeks later, during home visiting, majority 56(93.3%) of the participants had no diarrhoea. After Four (4) weeks, significant improvement was also achieved as 57(95.0%) participants had no diarrhoea. It was concluded that the significant improvement in the diarrhoea status in 24 hours, 2 weeks and 4 weeks post intervention was an indication that the combination of WHO-ORS plus zinc suggest how highly efficacious the regimen is in the management of under-five diarrhoea. Hence, Health workers in the PHC should combine the therapy and not using only one in the management of under-five diarrhoea.","PeriodicalId":295840,"journal":{"name":"nternational Journal of Public Health Pharmacy and Pharmacology","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128647904","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Nigeria's 2018 Demographic Health Survey, only 10.5% of women use a modern contraceptive method with 40.8% of users sourcing them from private sector providers. Despite the complementary role played by the private health facilities, women do not access and use family planning methods adequately. This study assessed the availability and quality of family planning services provided by private health facilities (PHFs) in Plateau state Nigeria. The study was a facility based cross-sectional study of private health facilities across the 17 Local Government Areas of Plateau state. A checklist questionnaire adapted from a combination of similar researches was used to capture details on availability and the quality of family planning services rendered by these private health facilities. Data analysis was done using descriptive and inferential statistics. Three hundred and fifty-six (356) private health facilities were covered in this study, the availability of family planning (FP) in Plateau state PHFs was found to be adequate in 75.3% of the facilities. The quality of family planning services was assessed, majority (59.6%) of the private health facilities has high quality. However, this does not go hand-in-hand with the availability of the same services. Reason for this was due to the differences in location, staff strength, different support given to facilities and the training of staff of the PHFs in the provision of family planning. Only 59% of these facilities were able to score above 13.5 on quality score and thereby considered as having high quality. There is need for more private health facilities inclusion in all forms of manpower development in family planning by government and other partners; this is to help improve the quality of family planning services in the private health sector of the state and country at large.","PeriodicalId":295840,"journal":{"name":"nternational Journal of Public Health Pharmacy and Pharmacology","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129801219","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Treatment success” is defined as the sum of cure and treatment completion. “Cure” is the “treatment completion” with at least three negative cultures taken at least 30 days apart after the intensive phase in the absence of “treatment failure. Predictors of treatment outcomes were also assessed on multivariate analysis. 423 patients (85% of the targeted sampling data) were available for analysis, of whom 272 (63.4%) had a conventional regimen, and 143 (33.8%) had a shorter treatment regimen. There is no significant difference in treatment outcomes between CM and HM; patients achieve similar treatment success in all models, 65.5% with HM compared to 68% at the CM (p = 0.608). Treatment failure was (4.1% versus 5.1%) in the HM versus CM, respectively; (p = 0.704). Death occurred in 20.9% of participants in the hospital model and 17.5% in the community model, and rates of Loss to follow-up were similar 9.5% HM vs 9.5% CM; (p = 0.704). On multivariate analysis, adjusting for age, HIV, sex, patient type, TB treatment history, resistance pattern, model of care and regimens, there was no change in treatment outcomes if patients were treated at the CM vs HM (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 0.92; 95% CI 0.59 – 1.46, p = 0.735). MDR-TB patients with unknown HIV status (not on ART) were nine times more likely to have unsuccessful treatment outcomes compared with HIV-negative respondents (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 8.83; 95% CI 1.79 – 43.60, p = 0.007). Similarly, HIV-positive respondents were 1.3 times more likely to have unsuccessful outcomes than HIV-negative (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.26; 95% CI 0.71–2.26, p = 0.429, but the difference is not statistically significant.
