We introduce a fast and texture-independent approach that exploits facial action parameters estimated by an appearance-based 3D tracker. We represent the learned facial actions associated with different facial expressions by time series. We adopt a dynamic time warping technique for recognizing the facial expressions using similarity measures between the learned time series and the tracked ones. The developed approach can be used online and can deal with non-frontal face images since it is view-independent. Preliminary experiments demonstrated the effectiveness of the developed method.","PeriodicalId":295452,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Image Processing 2005","volume":"91 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127121908","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Because of the reconstruction of such curves is an inverse problem, slight variations in input data completely skew the expected results. So, finding a robust reconstruction operator is highly required. We present a robust method based upon neural networks. This method takes advantage of that neural networks are generally robust to the noise. Furthermore, we propose two cascade algorithms of using these neural networks. The first algorithm allows faithful reconstruction of spectra that are previously learned. The second algorithm allows good generalization allowing for reconstructing a wide range of reflectance that are not learned in the training stage. The results confirm the robustness and the reliability of the proposed method compared to some classical ones.","PeriodicalId":295452,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Image Processing 2005","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127158764","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However the iterative procedure in POCS requires a lot of computations, and would be infeasible for practical post-processing applications with real-time constraints. In this paper, we propose non-iterative post-processing method based on POCS in DCT domain for complexity reduction. In DCT domain POCS (D-POCS), the low-pass filtering (LPF) is performed in the DCT domain to remove the inverse DCT and forward DCT modules from POCS. Through the investigation of LPF in iterative POCS, we define kth order LPF which is equivalent to the LPF with k iterations. By combining DCT domain filtering and the kth order LPF concept, we define kth order DCT domain LPF. Simulation results show that the proposed D-POCS without iteration gives very close PSNR and subjective quality performance compared to the conventional POCS with iterations, while it requires much less computational complexity. If we take into account typical sparseness in DCT coefficients, the D-POCS method gives tremendous complexity reduction. Hence the proposed D-POCS would be an attractive method for practical real-time post-processing applications.","PeriodicalId":295452,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Image Processing 2005","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125819972","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed technique can exploit both the knowledge of the 3D model and the intermediate information computed during the rendering process. Firstly, objects are classified, either semantically or automatically, according to their importance. Then the object classification is translated into a macroblock classification, with particular attention to object boundaries. The classification influences the encoder parameters selection, for instance, the quantization parameter. In order to maximize the performance, we propose a rate-distortion formulation of the problem. Experimental results compared with model-unaware encoding show that the proposed techniques can deliver consistent visual quality improvements for different synthetic scenarios using the same bitrate or even less. So far, the reported 3D face recognition techniques assume the use of active 3D measurement for 3D facial capture. However, active methods employ structured illumination (structure projection, phase shift, gray-code demodulation, etc.) or laser scanning, which is not desirable in many human recognition applications. A major problem of using passive stereo vision for 3D measurement is its low accuracy, and thus no passive methods for 3D face recognition have been reported previously. Addressing this problem, we have newly developed a high-accuracy 3D measurement system based on passive stereo vision, where phase-based image matching is employed for sub-pixel disparity estimation. This paper presents the first attempt to create a practical face recognition system based on fully passive 3D reconstruction.","PeriodicalId":295452,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Image Processing 2005","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125970329","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Aliasing is a common problem present in such downsampling. In this paper a novel technique for improving the low pass filter for improved downsampling is presented. This method uses an extra update step followed by P+U lifting scheme. The preprocessing update step is chosen as the dual update step associated with the wavelet. The spatially adaptive low pass (SALP) filtering concept is used for the second update step, leading to an overall low pass filter whose size adapts to the underlying signal content. The filter choices for the second update step is recovered at the decoder without any bookkeeping. Results using the 2D 5/3 wavelet with the extra pre-processing update step show improvements over conventional wavelets.","PeriodicalId":295452,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Image Processing 2005","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125970644","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed novel framework can fill the left lacuna region in the digital image. In previous related researches, texture synthesis and image inpainting construct the fundamentals of filling the lost image region. Texture synthesis can be used to fill the large hole of input texture, while image inpainting can be used to repair the small image gaps. In this paper, we propose an object removal framework by the sub-patch texture synthesis algorithm and weighted interpolation method with automatic repainting mechanism. In the filling process, the color distribution analysis is used to choose different methods. The exhaustive computation time is reduced by the weighted interpolation method. In order to repaint the faulty texture region intelligently, we use the color ratio gradients to detect the synthesized artifact region. The automatic artifact detection can lead repainting the faulty region without user intervention. The proposed algorithm can achieve better performance with seamless output images. The regular computation is also suitable for hardware architecture different from previous existing algorithms.","PeriodicalId":295452,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Image Processing 2005","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122530747","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Given a detected and tracked object as a sequence of images within a bounding box, we describe the periodic signature of its motion pattern using a twin-pendulum model. Then a principle gait angle is extracted in every frame providing gait phase information. By estimating the periodicity from the phase data using a digital phase locked loop (dPLL), we quantify the cyclic pattern of the object, which helps us to continuously classify it as a pedestrian. Past approaches have used shape detectors applied to a single image or classifiers based on human body pixel oscillations, but ours is the first to integrate a global cyclic motion model and periodicity analysis. Novel contributions of this paper include: i) development of a compact shape representation of cyclic motion as a signature for a pedestrian, ii) estimation of gait period via a feedback loop module, and iii) implementation of a fast online pedestrian classification system which operates on videos acquired from moving platforms.","PeriodicalId":295452,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Image Processing 2005","volume":"3 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116821653","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
